Viola Thrasher

Viola Maxine Thrasher, age 89, of Lamar, passed away Friday, February 27, 2015 at Truman Healthcare Center where she had been a resident for several weeks.

     Viola was born June 13, 1925, in Dade County, Missouri, to Olin and Ethel (Polston) Higgins.  She attended Sunshine Elementary School in Dade County, graduated from Golden City High School in 1943 and earned a teaching certificate from South West Baptist College in Bolivar.  She taught school at Prairie Chapel Rural School for two years. On September 15, 1945, in Girard, Kansas, Viola married Jack Thrasher and they made their home in Lamar. In addition to being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she had worked in the jacket department at Smith Brothers for three years, was a checker at McKay’s Thriftway five years, and a teacher’s aide for Fran Nutt’s kindergarten class for a year.  Viola then began a 22 year career at Lamar Bank & Trust, working in the bookkeeping department and as a teller until retiring in 1990.  She was an active member of First Baptist Church.

     Survivors include her husband of nearly 70 years, Jack, of the home; a daughter Linda and husband, David Ewers of Lamar; two brothers, Loyd (Sandra) Higgins, Granbury, Texas and Gary (Linda) Higgins, Travelers Rest, South Carolina; a sister, Ina (Walter) Baumgartner, Fulton, Missouri; two brothers-in-law, Frank Thrasher, Lamar, and John Thrasher, San Diego, California; a granddaughter, Amanda (Chris) Burr, Irwin, Missouri; and two great-granddaughters, Hailey and Desirae Burr.

     Viola was preceded in death by her parents, Olin and Ethel Higgins, and a sister, Violet Thrasher.

     Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Daniel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday.  Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

     Memorial contributions are suggested to First Baptist Church of Lamar in care of the funeral home.

Dub Hartman

G. W. “Dub” Hartman, 97, Carthage, MO, passed away Monday, February 23, 2015, at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO. G. W. was born February 18, 1918 in Carthage, MO, to William Edsker Hartman and Mary Belle Clubb. He married Dorothy Viola Gray on October 4, 1940, in Carthage, MO. She preceded him in death on May 22, 2011; during the devastating tornado in Joplin, MO. G. W. worked for Leggett & Platt as a machine operator for 35 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter; Sherrie Messer (Jerry), Carthage, MO, two granddaughters; Angela Howrey (Jeff), Carthage, MO, and Michelle Houser (Kevin) Lee Summit, MO;  four great-grandchildren; Tyler S. Howrey, Isabelle Rose Howrey, Oaklie Mae Howrey and Tiffanie Ann White; and three great-great- grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two sisters; Edna Louise McBride, and Viola Virginia Hartman, and one brother; William Harold Hartman.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 28, 2015, at 10:00 AM, in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Minister Joel Dorris officiatde. Interment followed at Park Cemetery, Carthage, MO. Donna Schmidt

Donna Cheryl Donaldson Schmidt, of Neosho, Missouri, passed away on February 22, 2015. 

She was born in Neosho on April 22nd, 1944 to Jack and Marjorie (Jay) Donaldson. Donna had a lifelong passion for learning. She graduated from Neosho High School in 1962. In 1966, Donna became a member of the first graduating class from Crowder College in Neosho. Donna attended the University of Missouri – Columbia for two years before transferring to Central Methodist University, where she earned her Bachelors and Masters of Arts in Education. To further pursue her love for learning, Donna went on to earn a Masters degree in Library Science from Eastern Illinois University in 1972. Donna began her 35-year career as an educator at Westview Elementary School, teaching kindergarten and serving as the school librarian. She expanded to teaching elementary level history, which fit well with her love for American and world history. From 1999 until her 2011 retirement, Donna served as an elementary school librarian across the Joplin School District. Donna loved life and surrounded herself with art, music, movies, animals and nature. She enjoyed traveling both in the U.S. and abroad, including international trips to the Caribbean Coast, Belgium, and cruising to countries across the Baltic Sea. An avid reader, skilled artist, dedicated crossword puzzler, and master board game player, she challenged us all to learn new perspectives, explore our world and unleash our inner creativity. Donna is a member of the Belfast Church of Christ. She was loved and will be greatly missed. 

Donna is survived by her daughter, Dr. Susan Schmidt of Edmond, OK; her mother Marjorie Donaldson of Neosho; sister Jackie Begey of Neosho; nephews, Todd Begey, Jason Begey, and Travis Creswell; nieces, Katy Roger and Molly Wyss; great-nephews, Troy Begey, J.T. Creswell and Sebastian Roger; and great-nieces, Carman Creswell and Elise Montgomery. She is also survived by step-niece Michelle Begey, step-great-nephew Ethan Reil, and close friends Beth Gaither and Sharon Winchester. Donna was preceded in death by her father, Jack Donaldson and sister, Janet Creswell. 

Funeral services were held Friday, February 27, 2015, at Clark Chapel of Memories, Neosho.

Dickie Ellis

Dickie W. Ellis, 63, Seneca, MO, passed into eternal rest February 25, 2015 at Baptist Integris Hospital in Oklahoma City after an illness.

Dickie Waye Ellis was born June 22, 1951 in Neosho, MO the son of Charles and Emma (Roark) Ellis. Dick was a lifelong Seneca resident. He was a 1969 graduate of Seneca High School. He formerly worked for Farmers Chemical in Galena, the former BF Goodrich Plant in Miami and he owned and operated D&L Refrigeration in Seneca. Dick was a member of the Seneca Full Gospel Church.

Survivors include his companion, Melanie Samuel, Seneca; one brother, Larry Ellis and wife Kathie, Claremore; one sister, Janet Nesvold, Seneca; step-son, Blake Samuel and wife Amanda, Joplin; grandchildren, Noah and Hendrix Samuel; Nieces and Nephews, Dana Williams and husband Sean, Claremore, Michael Ellis and wife Kori, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Rob Nesvold and wife Angela, Seneca and Brandon Nesvold and wife Stephanie, Seneca; 7 great-nieces and 3 great nephews and a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services under the personal direction of Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca were Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Funeral Home Chapel with Truman Brady officiating. Burial was in the Seneca Cemetery with Rob Nesvold, Brandon Nesvold, Craig Hall, Bryan Hall, Bobby Kuhn, Brian Mitchell, Doug Malone and Tony Smith serving as pallbearers. Alexandra Corben

Alexandra Colleen Corben was stillborn on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the Freeman Birthing Center.

Alexandra was born to Hannah Porter and Seth Corben, both of Carl Junction, Missouri.

Additional survivors include maternal grandparents, Mike and Michele Akers of Carl Junction; paternal grandparents, Brent and Angela Corben of Carl Junction; great-grandparents, Ralph and Brenda Gonzalez of Ashkum, Illinois, Robert and Sue Corben of Jasper; aunts and uncles, Brooke Blevins, Olivia Corben, Mariah Corben, Elijah Corben, Anna Corben, Patrick Marcotte, Andrew Marcotte, Jessica Marcotte and Taylor Porter.

Alexandra is preceded in death by an aunt, Ashley Marcotte and by aunt and uncle twins, Ethan and Emily Perrill; great-grandparents, Albert and Helen Perrill, Frances Briscoe and Sheila Vyhnanek.

Graveside services are planned for Friday, February 27, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Carl Junction Cemetery.

Dwight Wilson

Mr. Dwight C. Wilson of Carl Junction, passed away Friday, February 27, 2015 at home surrounded by his family. 

Dwight was born on March 25, 1925 in Alcester, South Dakota to David C. Wilson and Jessie Hamilton Wilson. Dwight’s life in Alcester was devoted to his church as a deacon and a teacher for over 40 years, his family as a brother, husband, and father, and his work as a farmer. He was also member of the Lions Club of Alcester and a member of First Baptist Church of Webb City. 

Dwight married June E. Leafstedt on August 28, 1947 and she survives at home. Additional survivors include three sons, Steven Wilson and wife Lori of Eden Prairie, Minnesota , Clark B. Wilson and wife Rachelle of Carl Junction and Jeffrey D. Wilson and wife Sandy of Joplin; a sister Ramona Erickson of Hawarden, Iowa; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 2, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Webb City with Dr. Joe Dan Fowler and Rev. Ron Woody officiating. Burial will be at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The visitation will be from 12:00 noon until the funeral at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Webb City. Pallbearers will be Brad Wilson, Dustin Woods, Luke Cole, Brian Jarrard, Kal Bergdale, Kim Eilers, and Brian Wilson. Memorials in memory of Mr. Dwight C. Wilson can be made to the Haitian Living Bridge in Haiti, in care of the funeral home.

Clinton Scribner

Clinton D. Scribner, 79, passed away February 26, 2015 at his home in Carthage; 

Clinton was born May 3, 1935 in Arkansas to Dewey B. Scribner and Cinda “Russow” Scribner. Clinton was a lifetime area resident, working for Leggett and Platt Wire Drawer, Carthage Marble and owned and operated Scribner and Son sawmill for several years. 

Clinton was united in marriage to Barbara Rose, and also Connie Dalton who both preceded him in death; he was then united in marriage to Gail Sims December 7, 2010 in Miami, Oklahoma she survives. Clinton is survived by one daughter Dana Martin and husband Tom of Carthage, four Step-daughters, one step-son, eleven grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. Clinton is preceded in death by one son Billy Scribner in 1972, and one sister Betty Estes. 

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday March 3, 2015 at Ulmer Funeral Home; Visitation will be from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday March 2, 2015 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Burial will be at Park Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at www.ulmerfh.com.

Tommy Fosdick

R.T. “Tommy” Fosdick, 52, passed away February 26, 2015. 

Tommy was born in Carthage, MO August 1, 1962 to R.T. Fosdick and Lora Lucille Lambeth. Tommy was a lifetime Carthage resident. He worked construction and also worked at Elk River Marina Grand Lake, Grove Ok. 

Tommy is survived by one daughter Jessica Boyden and husband Steve of Rogers Arkansas. one granddaughter Ember Boyden and one grandson Luke Boyden, two sisters Brenda Hicks and husband Gary and Tracy Klepper and husband Mallory both of Carthage, two Brothers Steve and wife Carrie of Oaktown, Indiana and Greg Fosdick of Ozark, MO. Tommy is preceded by his parents and one brother Matt Fosdick of Monroe, Indiana who passed in 2005. A special thank you to the staff at Emerald Point Nursing Care of Galena Kansas

Albert Crabtree

Albert Ray Crabtree, 84, Joplin, formerly of Seneca, died February 25, 2015 at his home in Joplin, following an illness. 

Ray was born November 25, 1930 in Neosho, the son of Robert E. and Cora Etta (Murray) Crabtree. He co-owned and operated with his wife, Anna and parents, the Ever Greene Motel for eight years in Miami, OK, while working at B. F. Goodrich. He served in the United States Navy for thirty years and then worked for Vicker’s in Joplin and at Sam’s Wholesale Club. Following his retirement, he pursued his hobby of keeping bees with his wife, Anna, until his health declined. Ray was an active member of the Seneca Church of Christ and Elder of the Neutral Lands Cherokee at Baxter Springs, KS. He had preached in North Miami for a year. Ray and Anna enjoyed time with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and he will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandpa. 

He is survived by his wife, Anna (Kittrell) of 65 years, whom he married on April 16, 1949 at Reno, NV. Also surviving are one son, Michael Ray Crabtree and wife, Clarita of Rogers, AR; three daughters, Terry L. Dirlam and husband, Michael of Drexel; Billlie Sue Connole and husband, Patrick of Seneca and Raeanna Stamper and husband, Donald of Siolam Springs, AR; one sister, Loraine Hounschell of Joplin; twelve grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Michael Dirlam and two brothers, Leon Crabtree and Eddy Crabtree.

Sandra Rand

Sandra Lee Flowers Rand, age 54 of Joplin, passed away at 4:45 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2015 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, following a long debilitating illness.

Born July 11, 1960 in California, she was the daughter of Jim and the late Shirley Flowers and grew up in Fresno. She worked for the Fresno School District in the cafeteria and later became a press assistant for RX Technologies in Joplin, until retiring.

On June 12, 2012 she married Brian H. Rand in Joplin. He survives.

Additional survivors include her father, Jim Flowers of Fresno; three children, Morgan Bennett and fiancé Mark of Montery, CA, Jennifer Bennett of Fresno, Nicholas Bennett and wife Amanda of Fresno; three stepsons, Brian J. Rand, Casey A. Rand, Brett M. Rand; six grandchildren, Kade, Dagon, and Machara Herring, Sophia and Ava Bennett, and Ryan Jayce Rand.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Brad Herring.

Graveside services will be held 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, March 3rd at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Willie Danner

Willie Faye Danner, Age 86 passed away Thursday February 26, 2015 at her daughter’s home in Joplin, MO. 

She was born on February 26, 1929 in Everton, Ar the daughter of William Clay and Syliva Elizabeth “Tyler” Miller. Willie married Irven Danner on September 2, 1949 in Bentonville, Ar, he preceded her in death. Willie was a housewife raising her three children. She was a member of the Southside Baptist Church in Joplin, enjoyed gardening, flowers, working in the yard, baking and serving her Lord. 

Willie was also preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Sharon Romain, a brother Van Miller, and two sisters: Fanny Miller and Dee Ann Rice. Survivors include a son Allen and wife Brenda of Joplin, a daughter Jeannie Newcomb and husband Jerry of Joplin, a sister Lela Davis of Harrison, Ar, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. 

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory with Pastor Phil Owens officiating. Burial will follow in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery Joplin. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 pm Monday at the Mortuary. The family suggests contributions to the Southside Baptist Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.

Evelyn Shields

Evelyn Vilate Abraham Shields (Val) was born at home on 7/7/22 in Kanosh, UT, the middle of 7 children, to Leonard and Anna Florence Bond Abraham. She passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on 2/21/15 at the Charleston Assisted Living Center in Cedar Hills, UT.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission in Chicago in 1943-1944. Over the years, she had many church callings, including President and Counselor in the Primary, and teacher, Compassionate Service Leader and Counselor in the Relief Society. She was also a temple worker in the Oakland California Temple.

She married Ray Searle Shields on 3/15/46 in the Manti Temple. They lived in Oakland, CA, Salt Lake City and Orem, UT, San Diego, CA, Yuma, AZ and Joplin, MO. Her beloved husband of 49 years passed away on 7/11/95 in Joplin, MO. They had 3 children: Dr. Stephen Ray Shields of Yuma, AZ, Judith Shields Tillman (Mrs. David Tillman) of American Fork, UT and Rebecca Shields Greene (Mrs. Frank Greene) of San Diego, CA. They had 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Val taught us that Disneyland actually IS magical. She was a wonderful cook and seamstress. She shared with her family many skills, including tying quilts and making amazing chocolate turtles. These skills live on with her grandchildren and with her great grandchildren.

Val is survived by her sisters Carol Chidester of Lindon, UT and Mary Gae Walker of Seattle, WA, her brother Hal Abraham of Richland, WA and her daughters Judy Tillman of American Fork, UT & Becky Greene of San Diego, CA.

She has anxiously awaited her reunion with Ray (husband), Steve (son), Tami (granddaughter) and the rest of her beloved family. She endured to the very end, waiting patiently to “graduate”.

Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday March 5, 2015 at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery Joplin, Mo. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.

Mary Jennett

Mary A. Jennett, age 97, of Sarcoxie, MO died on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at her home near Sarcoxie, MO. Mrs. Jennett was born in Pierce City, MO on Thursday June 14, 1917. She was the daughter of Paul and Minnie (Birkenbauch) Flehmer. Miss Flehmer married Daniel Jennett on August 2, 1944, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pierce City, MO and he preceded her in death in 1969. Mrs. Jennett was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church near Sarcoxie, MO.

Surviving are the following: her two sons, J.D. Jennett and wife Janet and Pat Jennett both of Sarcoxie, MO; three grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her daughter, Phillis Ann Schoen in 2003; three brothers, Fred, Joe, and John Flehmer; and her sister, Cecila Eck

Darren Wilson

Darren Wayne Wilson, 49, Seneca, MO, passed into eternal rest at 4:03 PM, February 24, 2015 at his home after a long illness with his family by his side. Darren Wayne Wilson was born July 24, 1965 in Neosho, MO the son of Stanley E. and Shirley Sue (Black) Wilson. Darren lived in the Seneca Area all his life. He was a 1983 graduate of Seneca High School. He worked for Laz-Y-Boy in Neosho, MO for 22 years. Darren also owned and operated a dairy farm 31 years in rural Seneca where he milked Jersey Cattle. He loved the farm and enjoyed his family and friends. Darren was a member of the Seneca Church of Christ. 

Darren Wayne Wilson married Pamela Renee' Hurley July 29, 1983 in Neosho, MO and she survives.
Additional survivors include his father Stanley Wilson, Seneca; one son, Jeremiah Wilson and wife Kasha, Seneca, MO; one daughter; Amanda Wilson and husband Seth, Little Rock, ARK; two brothers, David Wilson and wife Teresa, Seneca, MO and Dale Wilson and wife Cindy, Broken Arrow, OK; grand children, Josie Faye Wilson and Remington Wilson.

Darren was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Wilson; one sister, Donna Woolsey and one nephew Phillip Woolsey.

Vera Faye Brooks

Vera Faye (Leader) Brooks; 74, Wyandotte, OK, passed into eternal rest at 4:58 AM, Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at her home after an illness. Vera Faye Leader was born June 22, 1940 in Miami, OK the daughter of Claude and Stella (Hasseltine) Leader. Vera Faye was a 1958 graduate of Wyandotte High School. She was a homemaker and a member of the Sycamore Chapel United Methodist Church. 

Vera Faye Leader married Lloyd Lee Brooks November 14, 1961 in Wyandotte, OK and he preceded in her in death June 6, 2002.

Survivors include her children; Kevin Brooks, Wyandotte, Keith Brooks, Joplin, Lawrence Brooks, Lonnie Brooks; Grandchildren, Valarie Duree and husband TJ, Wyandotte, Kimberly Grimm and husband Zach, Joplin, Ashlin Deleon, Joseph Dorsey and wife Kaylee all of Joplin, Dustin Brooks, Webb City and Dillon Franks, Chetopa; one brother, Doug Leader and wife Marilyn, Miami; one sister, Elnora Wyrick, Wyandotte; one brother in-law Arno Graves and wife Barbara, Wyandotte; Great-Grandchildren, Connor Duree, Aubre Grimm, Allie Grimm, Ava Grimm, Emery Deleon, Tanner Dorsey, Taiton Dorsey and Brayden Bauchmen.

Flossie Burr

Flossie Mae Burr, 85, Neosho, died February 25, 2015 at Freeman Hospital in Neosho, following a lengthy illness. 

Flossie was born May 9, 1929 in Elsey, Missouri, the daughter of William and Bertha (Essary) King. She was a lifelong area resident and had worked at J.C. Penney’s for 25 years and then sold real estate before her retirement. She was a lifelong member of the Northside Baptist Church, where she was a member of the WMU and had been active in the youth choir. She loved her grandchildren and spending time with them. 

Flossie married Dale Burr on December 25, 1947 in Neosho and he preceded her in death on August 16, 2004. She is survived by three sons, Dennis Burr and wife, Debbie of Florissant, Colorado; Robert Burr and wife, Satotha of Neosho and Russell Burr and wife, Glenda of Webb City; one brother, Kenneth King of Los Angeles, California; seven grandchildren, Heather, Amanda, Allison, Andrew, Ashton, April and Julie; and three great grandchildren. Jim Meador

James “Jim” Wendell Meador, age 85, passed away on February 21, 2015, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin after a short illness. Jim was born July 4th, 1929 in Urbana, Missouri to the late Earl and Eva (Grisham) Meador. Jim graduated from Urbana High School in 1947 and from Southwest Missouri State College in 1952 with a degree in accounting. He began work for Baird, Kurtz, and Dobson, Certified Public Accountants in Joplin December 1951 and retired as a partner in 1981. While in public accounting Jim was active in several accounting associations.

Jim was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and Tri-M Sunday School Class for over 50 years. He was an avid golfer getting his first and only hole-in-one at the age of 73. He was also an old car enthusiast. He was a member of Fellowship Lodge No. 345, AF&AM. He was master of this lodge in 1971. Jim also belonged to the Scottish Rite Bodies of Joplin. He loved working with cattle and general farm work. His family was always one of his top priorities.

Jim married Elizabeth Ann Potter June 10, 1953 in Springfield Missouri. She survives at home. Additional survivals include daughter Carol Lynn and husband Rusty, Fordyce Ar., daughter Julie Gillogly and husband Kevin, Republic Mo., and son Jim Meador and wife Carole, Webb City Mo.: grandchildren, Kristen Woods and husband Shannon, Springfield, Mo., Lauren Slater and husband Chris, Springfield, Mo. Jennifer Hooks and husband Jonathan, Bentonville, Ar., Kelli Wright and husband Josh, Sargents, Co.: and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Wilma Gillham, and two brothers, Bill and Ed Meador.

Jim was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He was a man of great integrity. He will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at 1st United Methodist Church. Reverend Bruce Jacobs will officiate, with a private family burial before the service. The pallbearers will be Chris Slater, Jonathan Hooks, Josh Wright, Shannon Woods, Rusty Lynn, and Kevin Gillogly. Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.

Raymond Hinman

Raymond Wesley Hinman, age 90, of Webb City, passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at St. Luke's Nursing Center in Carthage, Missouri after a lengthy illness.

Raymond was born March 13, 1924 in Kismet, Kansas, son of the late Raleigh Hinman and Mary Berghaus Hinman. He was baptized at St. Joseph Hospital in Liberal, Kansas, and his confirmation in St. Patrick Catholic Church, Plains, Kansas where his family attended.

Raymond grew up spending time at his parents General Store, and later at his father's service station. Ray had many happy memories visiting his grandfather's farm. At the age of 12 he was driving the tractors, and helping out at the farm. This is when he knew he wanted to be a farmer. His grandfather helped him get into the hog business while he was in high school, and to help buy feed and supplies, Ray also had a paper route and worked at the grade school as a janitor.

Ray had a passion for airplanes, and spent hours building model airplanes of balsa wood and tissue paper. This love of airplanes led him to spending several hours at the Plains Airport where his uncle let him fly with him, and at the age of 18 he got his pilot's license and joined the local flying club. He enjoyed flying his Piper Clipper for many years.

He graduated from high school and joined the United States Navy where he served during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theatre, at Pearl Harbor, and the Marshall Islands where he was involved in a battle that took several Japanese soldiers at Milli Atoll.

Following his return from service, he worked several jobs including working for his uncle on the farm, helping his brother at a flying school, and at International Harvester in Plains, Kansas. He then got to start his lifelong ambition to become a full time farmer. In 1951, after marring Clara Mae Maxwell at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal, Kansas, the couple moved to Flagler, Colorado where they became farmers and ranchers full time. They enjoyed this life together for many years, and had one son, Gregory James Hinman. Ray served on the Flagler Rural Fire Department Board since 1956.

Ray was a devote catholic, and was active at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Flagler where he was an Extra Ordinary Minister of the Eucharist. He loved his family very much, and also took good care of his employees that he hired on the farm, mainly high school age boys. He still keeps in touch with many of them today. It was said "Ray made work enjoyable".

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his siblings, Eunice McElroy, and Bernard "Bee" Hinman.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Clara; his son, Gregory James Hinman and wife Charlene of Webb City; grandchildren, Carrie Gilstrap and husband Jason of Owasso, Oklahoma, and Joni Baker of Webb City; great-grandchildren, Lainey Gilstrap, Kinsley Gilstrap, Mason Baker, Kaleigh Baker; a sister, Louise Kneisel of Topeka, Kansas

Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

A rosary will be recited on Monday at 6:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer Association, or the Flagler, Colorado Rural Fire Department.

He is survived by his mother, Elfrieda Frad of Neosho, a brother, Wilfred Frad of Neosho, a sister-in-law, Sherry Frad of Neosho, a daughter, Chance of Oklahoma, and two granddaughters. Alfred is preceded in death by his father, Orville Frad, Jr., his paternal grandparents, Orville Sr. and Leora Frad, and one niece, Anna Lee Frad.

Betty Arnce

We have lost a beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother who loved her family very much and cherished her friends greatly. She has left a legacy of giving to others, devoting herself to family and friends throughout her lifetime, and joyfully worshipping in her Christian faith.

Betty M. Arnce peacefully passed away on Sunday February 15 in Kansas City where she had resided for the past 6 years.

Born May 23, 1920 in Webb City, Mo, Betty Palmer Arnce spent almost her entire life in the Webb City/Joplin area. She graduated from Webb City High School in 1937, and then became a legal secretary as a young woman.

She married Harvey E. Arnce on October 16, 1944 upon his discharge from the Army. They settled for a short time in St. Louis where Harvey pursued an education for a career as a mortician. Returning to Webb City, Harvey joined the Johnson - Arnce - Simpson Mortuary and Betty devoted her time to raising her four children – Linda, Carol, Harvey Bruce, and Betty Anne - as well as beginning a life-long passion as a volunteer for organizations that she felt worthy. The family home was in Webb City until moving to Joplin in 1964 when Harvey purchased Parker Mortuary.

Early on, she became an avid volunteer for the Freeman Hospital Auxiliary, serving not only with weekly work hours at the hospital but also in numerous leadership positions. Betty was honored as Volunteer of the Year for 2004 and was recognized ultimately for over 40 years of continuous volunteer service to Freeman and she still kept her pink smock that she had worn so proudly.

She also focused her volunteer commitments on the schools attended by her children and her then home church – Frisco Church –serving as a Bible Class Teacher and director of several annual Vacation Bible Schools.

But Betty (and Harvey) enjoyed also a subsequent long time membership at Calvary Baptist Church, serving in many ways in support of the church as it grew, even including singing joyfully in the choir particularly later in her life. She was a marvelous baker and loved providing goodies to any event at church or at school.

Betty was the consummate seamstress, making clothes for her children often without a pattern, and later producing a number of quilts that are left for her family to enjoy. Her skills as a seamstress were often directed to projects for the Auxiliary at Freeman, making quilts to donate for an auction, or stockings caps for the newborns to wear home from the hospital.

Her other passion was her 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She (and Harvey until his death) happily traveled to the homes of her children - often with the focus of seeing beloved grandchildren. Later in life that passion for young children was evident in her laughter and gleam in her eye whenever she was in the company of babies and little ones, particularly new great grandchildren. Betty and Harvey spent many weeks traveling – not only in their travel trailer which was frequently full of grandchildren, but also all over the world. She took great pride in compiling a book of Missouri County Seat courthouses – every one of them in the whole state with pictures and descriptions – while camping throughout Missouri. Her artistic talents continued to shine throughout her life – even learning to paint in the very last years of her life. One of her paintings was selected for a juried auction at the Memories in the Making art auction sponsored by the Heart of American Alzheimer's Association chapter, after moving to Kansas City to be near her daughter Linda.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Estel in 1986. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Goldie and Irene Palmer of Anchorage, Alaska, and her brothers Bob and Joe Palmer.

She is survived by her four children and their families:

• Daughter Linda Stewart and her husband Dan of Leawood, Kansas, and their family – their son Andy and wife Dulsey Stewart, Danny and DeLeighsey all of Springfield, Missouri - and their daughter Lauren and husband Ryan Chance and their children Lila and Clara of Mequon, Wisconsin;

• Daughter Carol Stults of Seattle, Washington and her family – her daughter Amy Stults Smith, Alexa and Emily of Houston, Texas, and her daughter Jennie Seaver, Sean and Aaron of Richland, WA;

• Son Harvey B. Arnce and his wife Annette and their family – their son David and wife Mikel Anne Arnce, Donovan and Lincoln, and their daughter Sarah Arnce all of Phoenix, AZ;

• Daughter Betty Gwaltney of Anchorage, Alaska and her family – her son Sean Gwaltney of Anchorage, and her son Brian and wife Cindy Gwaltney of Roseville, California.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and other extended family members who always enjoyed stopping by to see her at her Kentucky Avenue home and whom she welcomed with joy, often with a slice of pie or cake ready to share.

In order to honor our Mother, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church on Saturday, February 28th at 1pm. We invite everyone to join us in a time of joyful remembrance for Betty Arnce and the life she led. Visitation with family members will be at the church immediately following the services. A private burial will be held separately.

Lucinda Baker

Lucinda Elizabeth Baker, age 63 of Joplin passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at Joplin Health and Rehabilitation following an extended illness.

Lucinda was born January 18, 1952 to the late Martin Kilmer and Mary Brubacher Kilmer in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She worked as a clerk for Casey's General Store in Pierce City, Mo and later in Carterville. She attended Faith Holiness Church in Joplin.

On December 8, 2007 she married Randy Baker in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, he survives of the home.

Additional survivor include step-daughters, Jeannie and Debbie; step-sons, Randy and William; siblings, Lydia and husband Enos Sauder of Latham, Mo, Adin and wife Annie Kilmer of Versailles, Mo, William Kilmer of Russellville, Mo, Eli and wife Irene Kilmer of Denver, Pa, Harvey and wife Judy Kilmer of California, Mo, Rufus and wife Martha Kilmer of Latham, Mo, Fannie and husband Eddie Martin of Nappanee, In, Amanda Burkholder of Rochester, In. and Nancy and husband David Ramer of Tippecanoe, In; 12 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a step-son, Terry and two sisters.

Graveside services are planned for Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Osborne Memorial Cemetery in Joplin.

Trevor Webb

Trevor Scott Webb, age 30, Joplin, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2015.

Trevor was born March 22, 1984 in Joplin to Scott Webb and Annette Webb and had lived in the Joplin area all of his life.

He was a 2002 graduate of Joplin High School, where he excelled in baseball and football. Trevor was a family man. His family was first and foremost.

Trevor is survived by a son, Trevor ‘Cruiz’ Webb, Joplin; his father, Scott Webb and his wife, Sheila, Joplin; his mother, Annette Webb, Joplin; two sisters, Tori Webb and Ashli Robinson, both of Joplin; paternal grandmother, Beverly Ann Dixon, Topeka, Kansas; maternal grandmother, Jeanette Sweet, Joplin, Debbie Cartright, Springfield; niece, Jadyn Gage; nephew, Garren Berry; and several other extended family members.

Services are planned for Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 7th and Pearl Ave. Pallbearers will be Aaron Garcia, Travis Hoke, Travis Renfro, Darris Strickland, Hunter Perry and Dustin Campbell. Honorary pallbearers will be Joey Hill, Jason Fields, Matt Foglesong, Brandon Durossette, Gary Berry and Damen Moore. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.

Robert Copeland

Robert D. Copeland, age 91 of Joplin, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2015 at the Communities of Wildwood Ranch. Robert was born on March 31, 1923 at the Wildwood Ranch.

He married Evelyn Marie French on June 15, 1942. Together they had three sons.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was wounded in action while in the Philippines.

He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII and a Purple Heart. He was a disabled veteran.

After leaving the service he worked as an office machine manager for many years at Firestone Typewriter Co. and Hobbs Typewriter Co. Robert had great faith in Jesus and was a member of Faith Assembly of God.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Evelyn; sons, Bob Copeland and wife Kathe, Ron Copeland and wife Pearl of Joplin, Jim Copeland of Escondido, CA; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for family and friends will be held at the Parker Chapel on Friday at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to V.F.W. Post 534 of Joplin, in care of the mortuary.

Fred Brock

Fred Newton Brock, 98, Joplin, passed away on February 23, 2015 at his home in Joplin, following a short illness. 

Fred was born on the family farm near Longview in McDonald County to William Samuel Brock and Lillie Ethel Parker Brock on November 14, 1916. He graduated from Stella High School in 1933. Upon graduation, he began a career in farming, which he continued until 1994, except for serving in the Army during WW II. During his farming career he raised Angus and Holstein Cattle, as well as being a contract grower of chickens and turkeys. Sometimes Fred was caring for over 100,000 turkeys at one time. Fred was active in the community and served on the Board of Directors at New Mac for many years. 

After retiring from farming, Fred moved to Joplin to begin a second business of managing the family’s rental properties. From his humble beginnings of being born in a log house with a dirt floor, Fred got to see many amazing changes in the way people live throughout his life. He was young in spirit, always wanting the newest and the best of everything, especially in his love of cars. 

At the age of 96, he insisted on getting a new car, not because he planned to drive it or needed one, as he stopped driving the previous year. He told family and friends that he could not drive it, but he could still ride in it. Remaining a remarkably active man, he continued driving daily until 95 and mowed his own yard until shortly before his death. 

Fred married his beloved wife, Ina P. DePriest on January 20, 1952 in Bentonville, Arkansas and she preceded him in death on December 23, 2006. Fred is survived by his son, Stephen Fred Brock of Overland Park, Kansas, in laws, Mike and Karen Viles of Joplin; his care-giver, Linda Gould, numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved Border Collie, Patsy. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Thelma Kaye Brock Bartley and two brothers, Lee Brock and Harry Brock.

Dr. Al Cade

Dr. Alfred R. Cade, age 54 of Joplin, passed away at 4:23 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Freeman West Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer since November 2008.

Born July 15, 1960 in Kansas City, MO, he was the son of the late Alfred R. Cade, Sr. and Marie Cade. In 1983, he received his Bachelor of Science in education (health and physical education) and his Master of Science in education (health and physical education in 1985, both from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. In 2001 he earned his Doctorate of Education from St. Louis University.

In 1984 he joined the Missouri Southern faculty as a physical education instructor for the Department of Kinesiology and as assistant football coach, working with the Lions’ defensive line. In 1993, he returned to Northwest Missouri State University as an instructor and later taught and served as an assistant football coach at Minnesota State University –Mankato.

He returned to Missouri Southern in 1996 as assistant to the dean of the School of Education. He then served as interim dean and later was named the school’s dean. He served as chair of the Department of Teacher Education from 2005 to 2012.

He worked as faculty advisor for the Southern IMPACT program, a member of the administrative council, shared governance and strategic planning committees, the athletic council, and the campus diversity committee.

Along with serving on various committees for the Missouri Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the Missouri Advisory Council of Certification for Educators, he served seven years as vice president and president for Missouri Association for Blacks in High Education.

He was an executive board member as well as vice president for Boys and Girls Clubs of Southwest Missouri, city of Joplin Human Rights Commission and Joplin Schools and Community Facilities Committee, as well as the Miracle League of Joplin and Southwest Center for Educational Excellence. He was chair of the annual George Washington Carver Art and Essay Contest.

He was also involved with Joplin area Special Olympics, Joplin Chamber of Commerce Golden Apple Teacher Award Selection Committee and Langston Hughes Celebration Committee.

From NWMSU he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 and received its Distinguished Alumni Award in 2013.

In 2014, he was elected to the executive board for the Missouri Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and vice-chairman for the Missouri Council of Education Deans. He served on state and nation-wide examination boards assessing teacher education programs.

On July 5, 1991, he married the former Dorothy Shireman in Carthage, MO. She survives.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Keisha Smith of Webb City; a son, Chris Smith and wife Cindy of Joplin; his mother, Marie Cade of Allen, TX; three sisters, Joi Marie Cade, Sherri Rawlins and husband Leonard, all of Allen, Lorine Webb of Kansas City, MO; his brother, Rick Cade of Kansas City; five grandchildren, Brant, Alyssa, Destini and Christopher Smith and Jalynn Smith-Ward.

Funeral services will be held at MSSU Taylor Performing Arts building at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Robin Sigars, minister, will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at Taylor Performing Arts building. Private interment will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Pallbearers will be Dan Scheible, Rod Criss, Trey Moeller, Mike Wilson, Jon Gutherson and Jeremi Wofford. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to MSSU Education Department or the Multiple Myeloma Cancer Research Foundation, in care of the mortuary.

June Williams

June Adams Williams was born during a flood June 7, 1935 in the unincorporated community of Belfast—West of Neosho, Missouri.

June died in her home in the early morning hours Friday February 20, 2015 steps from the place of her birth surrounded by those who loved her most. June graduated from Neosho High School in 1953 in the top 20 of her class. She attended St. John’s School of Nursing –Joplin until she left nursing school to marry Lowell Williams just prior to his Air Force deployment to serve in the Korean conflict. 

Upon his return from Korea June joined Lowell stationed in Louisiana, then later Seattle. June spoke with great fondness of her time working in a charity hospital in Louisiana, which sparked her interest and passion for civil rights and equality which she carried throughout her life. Her early married days were full of happiness and adventure. She loved Seattle and loved to talk about watching out her picture window to see the ships coming in and out of Puget Sound. June attended Joplin Business College and attended Crowder College in 1963 during its first semester of operation. June was an administrative assistant and helped open Neosho’s Buddy L plant. 

In addition to her secretarial duties she was the Buddy L factory nurse, acting as first responder after plant accidents. June worked at many jobs throughout her lifetime and always took pride in a job well done. She managed several retail stores selling clothing and later durable medical equipment. She prided herself on being able to look at a person’s physique and know what size and type of blue jeans would be most flattering to them.--She rarely missed. She helped people navigate the Medicare and insurance systems in the days before computers to get needed medical supplies. 

Upon “retirement” she became a much sought after in home care giver. She was a kind, and gifted care giver making life comfortable for those she cared for and their families. She accomplished her goal of dying with her boots on, caring for her family until minutes before the pain of cancer took her to the hospital. June took pride in working her crossword puzzles in pen. June loved to travel either in person or vicariously, always excited to hear about another person’s adventure. Among her own travels were a trip down Route 66 from Neosho to California and back as child. June loved yard work, gardening and home making, she was a warm and gracious hostess. She helped many people get back on their feet and was a mentor to any who crossed her path and needed her help. She never hesitated to open her home or her heart to a person in need. She took joy in small things. She loved her family fiercely. 

Survivors include one daughter Rebecca Williams, Neosho; Grandchildren, Genevieve Williams, Joshua Love, Marissa Love, Valerie Love, Cesar Estrada, William Wiseman, Jason Hale and Chris Hale; four great-grandchildren and one brother, Don Adams. June was preceded in death by one son, Eric Williams; one brother, Pete Adams; three sisters, Bette Willis, Carol Willis and Laureva Lankford. The body has been taken for cremation. A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held at June's home (11186 Mulberry Rd, Neosho, MO) February 28, 2015 starting at 4 pm.

June Henson

Thelma “June” Henson, age 82, of Joplin, passed away on Tuesday February 17, 2015, at Freeman Hospital, following an illness. 

June was born on May 11, 1932 in Jasper, Mo., the daughter of the late Harvey and Ruby (Miller) Allager. She has been a lifetime area resident. She was a member of the Greenwood Baptist Church. She owned and operated June’s Boutique on Main Street of Joplin. She enjoyed reading. 

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carlton Rod, and by her second husband Jim Henson, and by her daughter, Ranae Ayers in May of 2012. June is survived by one son, Brad York and his wife Gina, Joplin, one sister, Betty Willis, Springfield, Mo.; three grandchildren, Amber Ayers, Dayton Ayers, and Paige Himes; and one great-grandchild, Zowie Ayers. It was June’s wish to be cremated. No formal services are planned at this time.

Donald Pirtle

Donald W. Pirtle, age 50, of rural Seneca, Mo. passed away at 8:30 a.m. Monday, February 16, 2015 at his home following a one month illness. Donald was born November 11, 1964 in Aberdeen, Washington. He moved to the Joplin area 13 years ago, moving here from Washington State. He was employed as a Truck Driver for Quality Transportation in Halltown, Mo. for 6 years and considered himself an excellent Truck Operator. He attended Shepherd’s Chapel in Gravette, Arkansas and loved studying prophecy in the Word of God.

Donald married Karen Cupp December 31, 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada and she survives. Elinor Hensley

Elinor Jean Hensley, 92, of Carthage passed away at 1:15 a.m. Saturday February 21, 2015 at St. Luke’s Nursing Center in Carthage. 

Elinor was born October 11, 1922 in Tonganoxie, Kansas. She was the daughter of William Oelschlaeger and Emma “Scheidt” Oelschlaeger. Elinor was a resident of Carthage for the past fifty years and was a homemaker. 

Elinor was united in marriage to James Hensley on March 5, 1952. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1994. Elinor is survived by three daughters; Ellen Quarton of Carthage, Patricia Miller of Topeka, KS and Sherrie Greer and her husband Darren of Phoenix, AZ, two sisters Anna Louise Lotko of Colorado and Jaline Gilbertson of Kansas City, Kansas. Eight grandchildren; Kelly Miller, Kim Link, Katy Miller, Jacob Hensley, Sarah Anderson, Kris Hennen, Jessie Blackwell and Karl Hennen and 11 great grandchildren. 

Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Dudman Springs Cemetery, east of Carthage. Mike Switzer

Donald Michael “Mike” Switzer, age 71 of Joplin, passed away Friday, February 20, 2015 at his home. 

Born September 1, 1943 in Superior, NE, he was the son of the late Donald F. and Mollie L. Johnson Switzer and graduated from Superior High School in 1961. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1961-1964. Mike worked at Safeway Cheese from 1973 until their closure in 1993. He retired from Snak-Atak Convenience Stores in 2009. He was a member of Christ’s Community United Methodist Church. Mike was an avid Chiefs, Royals and K-State Wildcats fan. He also enjoyed working in the yard and garden. He loved animals and little children. 

On April 9, 1993, he married the love of his life, Sandra Farmer. She survives. Additional survivors include a daughter, Kimberly of Norman, OK; two sons, Brian Switzer and wife Brandee, Jason Farmer; four sisters, Karen Cox and husband Glen, Susan Hodges and husband Dennis, Peggy Barton and husband Jim, Cindy Carver; his mother-in-law, Earline Dickson; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, whom he loved dearly. 

Funeral services with military honors will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Parker Chapel, after which, the family will receive friends. Private interment will be in Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of Parker Mortuary.

Terry McDowell

Dallas Terrance McDowell, 52, Joplin, went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his loving family on February 15, 2015, following an accident. 

Dallas ‘Terry’ was born August 4, 1962 in Carthage, Missouri, the son of Dallas E. and U. Lamoygne (Mann) McDowell and was a lifelong area resident. He had worked as a class A welder for Lozier’s, Cardinal Scales and then at VSSI in Carthage. He was known as a master woodworker, master machinist and master welder. Dallas ‘Terry’ enjoyed fishing, playing chess, pitching horseshoes, was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and was of the Baptist Faith. 

He is survived by four children, Brandy McDowell; Amber Jones of Lebanon, Missouri; Chantz McDowell of Webb City and Sabrina Berliew of Webb City; his mother, Lamoygne McDowell of Joplin; one sister, Monna Goode and husband, Dennis of Carl Junction; three grandchildren, Cody Jones, Wyatt Jones and Olivia L. Sutton and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his father and sister, Sharon McDowell Hughes.

Nancy Elizabeth “Chandler” McCandless, 93, passed away February 18, 2015 at Freeman Hospital, Joplin.

 Nancy was the daughter of John Otis Chandler and Ada Marie “Richards” Chandler. Nancy was a lifetime Carthage resident and a homemaker. She was a member of the Victory Baptist Church of Carthage. 

Nancy was united in marriage to Orwille N. McCandless on December 18, 1947 in Carthage. He preceded her in death on November 2005. Nancy was preceded in death by three brothers Paul Chandler, Faye Chandler and LeRoy Chandler, three sisters Helen Carmicheal, Ruth Clark and Ada Marie Wendler. Nancy is survived by two sisters Pauline Gillette of Sarcoxie and Viola Stoops-Stewart of Springfield, several nieces and nephews. 

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday February 24, 2015 at Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel. Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. on Tuesday prior to the service. Betty L. “Murphy” Rea, 82, passed away February 19, 2015 at Freeman Hospital. 

Betty was born in California to Edna Davis. She was raised in the Golden City, Lockwood area; she was a homemaker and worked in nursing at the old McCune Brooks Hospital. Betty was a member of the Forest Park Church of Carthage. 

Betty was united in marriage to Will Rea September 25, 1998 in Carthage, Missouri he survives. Betty is survived by two daughters Vickie Fosdick and Patricia Murphy Marston both of Carthage and one son Carey Murphy of Carthage, seven grandchildren Adam Murphy, Caitlin Murphy, Brian Fosdick, Bruce Fosdick, Brad Fosdick, Bryce Fosdick and Erin Marston, four great grandchildren, two sisters June Earp of Liberty, MO and Brenda Rusher of Springfield, MO, and one brother Gary McCulloch of Carthage.

Myrtle Hendricks, 96, Neosho, died Feb. 15, 2015 at her home in Neosho, following an illness. Myrtle was born April 25, 1918 in Jackson County, Missouri. She had worked as bookkeeper. She married Earl Hendricks, who preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by three daughters, four brothers and four sisters. She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Larry Hart

Larry Carl Hart, 70, Stark City, Missouri, died Feb. 19, 2015 at Freeman Neosho Hospital, following a nine month illness. 

Larry was born Sept. 25, 1944 in Stella, the son of Carl and Ruth (Eaton) Hart. He was a lifelong area resident and served in the National Guard. He owned and operated the Goodman Meat Locker for 33 years and enjoyed hunting, fishing and cutting wood. 

Larry and Patsy (Brock) were married on May 5, 1967 at Jones Chapel and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Chad Hart of Ames, IA and Jason Hart and wife, Jennifer of Stark City; his mother, Ruth Hart of Neosho; two brothers, Terry Hart of Grove, Oklahoma and Steve Hart of Neosho and four grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Carl Hart.

Family services will be held at a later date.

Bud Heath

Melvin L. “Bud” Heath, age 77, of Joplin, passed away on Thursday February 19, 2015, at his home, following an illness. 

Bud was born on November 26, 1937 in Golden City, Mo., the son of the late Hallet H. and Bernice G. (Wright) Heath. He has been a lifetime area resident. He served in the United States Army during the Berlin Crisis. He married Mary G. “Pat” Morgan and together they raised three daughters. He was an original co-owner, with his brother Bill Heath, of the Heath Brothers Barber Shop. After forty-eight years he finished his career at the Heath Sisters Barber Shop, retiring in 2014. He enjoyed raising cattle, collecting antiques, woodworking and going to the lake with family. He was a great cook who loved fixing breakfast for his girls and grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. Bud had a love for life. He had a great sense of humor, and a way about him that made people feel special. He was an excellent barber and a true friend to many. He was a wonderful father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed. 

He is survived by three daughters, Sherry Dunlay and husband Jim, Centrailia, Il., Tracy Lowry and husband Wayne, Seneca, Mo., and Shannon Heath, Seneca, Mo.; three brothers, John Heath, Joplin, Bill Heath, Seneca, Mo., and Jim Heath, Redings Mill, Mo.; one sister, Kay Cargile, Webb City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Morgan Lopez, Madison Lopez, Meredith Lopez, Mirana Heath, Wyatt Lowry, and Jordan Lowry; and two great-grandchildren, Kain Lopez and Raigen Lopez.. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary “Pat” in 2012, and by one brother, Lloyd Heath in 1976. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Hospice Compassus and their many family members and friends for the help and support given to them during Bud's illness. It was Bud’s request to be cremated. 

Friends and family are welcome to attend a Celebration of Bud’s life Sunday, February 22nd at 3:00 p.m. at the Heath Sisters Barber Shop, 2814 E 7th Street, Joplin.

Jessie Reynolds

Jessie Colleen Reynolds, age 75 of Joplin, passed away at 11:10 a.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Freeman West Hospital after an illness of several years.

Born December 15, 1939 in Joplin, she was the daughter of the late John Douglas Lacey and Phyllis Cordelia Johnston Lacey, and lived in Joplin most of her lifetime. A homemaker and mother, she had also worked at American Laundry, Vogel’s T-Shirt in Galena and Howard Johnson’s Motel. Colleen was a Baptist.

On July 22, 1983, she married Robert E. (Bobby) Reynolds at Chillicothe, MO. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2011. A son, Terry Andrews; grandchild, Lacey Lansaw; brother, Bobby Lee Richardson; and sister, Jane Geyer also preceded her in death.

Survivors include six children, Christina Hayes and husband Wesley, Cheryl Long and husband Harry, Robert Andrews and wife Michelle, Belinda Lansaw and husband Rick, all of Joplin, John Andrews and wife Lisa of Calimesa, CA, Keith Andrews and wife Roselind of Joplin; 17 grandchildren, Shelly Hayes, Sam and Nick Becker, Alex and Arica Lansaw, Jessica Forcum, Reba and Grace Andrews, Kyle Hance, Tyler, Megan, Kattie, Kayle, Miley and Trever Andrews, Matthew and Crystal Corp; six great-grandchildren, Alex Cole, Wesley Hayes, Terry Shuey, Matthew Hayes, Isaiah Shuey and Lacey Wilson.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery with Alvin Kirk, minister officiating. Family members will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday.

She was born on August 30, 1960 in Berryhill, Oklahoma to Jesse Monroe Keffer and Mary Lou Mabe. Deborah was a homemaker. She was married to John Pequignot and he preceded her in death in 2004. Deborah is survived by a daughter, Camdon Wilkins of Joplin; and 4 grandchildren. 

She has been taken for cremation and the family will have memorial services at a later date.

Martin Hohulin

Martin Dale Hohulin of Lamar, Missouri passed from this life Friday, February 20, 2015 at the age of 86, following several years of declining health. Martin was born to Silas and Lydia (Marti) Hohulin on April 30, 1928 in rural Bourbon County near Fort Scott, Kansas. Martin attended schools in Illinois and Kansas and graduated from high school in Princeville, Illinois. He married Edith (Kaiser) Hohulin on October 17, 1948 in Morton Illinois. To this union was born four children, Bill, Bonnie, Becky, and Bubs. During their married life, Martin and Edith lived in several locations in Illinois and Kansas before moving to Lamar in 1973. They were lifelong members of the Apostolic Christian Church.

Martin worked at a number of professions in his life including as a farmer, plumber, pipefitter with Caterpillar, and night security at O’Sullivan’s. He retired from O’Sullivan’s in 1998.
Martin was an avid collector of license plates. He and his oldest son, Bill, collected them together until Bill’s death in 1970. Martin went on to become one of the premier collectors in the hobby, amassing a collection known to fellow hobbyists across the nation. He enjoyed attending regional and national conventions and meeting and trading with fellow collectors. In later years when his declining health kept him from traveling as far, he and Edith enjoyed attending bluegrass festivals in Missouri and Arkansas.

Martin was preceded in death by his father, mother, two stepmothers, two brothers, a sister, and son, Bill Hohulin. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Edith Hohulin of Lamar; two daughters, Becky Hohulin of Fort Scott, Kansas and Bonnie Beutel (Keith) of Indianapolis, Indiana; a son, Bubs Hohulin (Marilyn) of Lamar; seven grandchildren, Jamie Beutel of Pasadena, California, Jackie Gurrolla (Ricardo), Jeremy Beutel (Meg), Joe Beutel (Mandi) all of Indianapolis, Indiana, Jon Beutel (Natalie) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Bill Hohulin, and Steven Hohulin, both of Springfield, Missouri; three great grandchildren, Savannah, Leah, and Malachi Gurrolla, all of Indianapolis, Indiana; two brothers, Ben and Melvin Hohulin, both of Illinois and two sisters, Edith Knobloch of Iowa and Mary Haynes of Illinois.

Visitation will be Tuesday Feb. 24 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Warden Konantz Funeral Home in Lamar and funeral services will be held Wednesday Feb. 25 at 11:00 am at the Apostolic Christian Church of Lamar under the direction of Warden Konantz funeral home. The Apostolic Christian Church ministers will officiate. In lieu of flowers the family asks for contributions to be made to the Apostolic Christian Church World Relief Fund.

Francis Buzzard

Francis L. Buzzard, 74, Wyandotte, OK, passed into eternal rest February 19, 2015 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin after a sudden illness.

Francis Leon Buzzard was born November 7, 1940 in Racine, MO the son of Jack and Leah (Crawford) Buzzard. Francis lived in the area most all of his life. He worked as a truck driver for Buske Line in Seneca for 34 years. He then worked for A-Bove Par in Webb City for 11 years retiring in 2010. Francis loved racing and was a mechanic. He was a people person and enjoyed cutting up with the guys at the coffee shop. He also loved his children and grandchildren and enjoyed teasing them. He was a faith full member of New Life Fellowship in Neosho, MO.
Francis L. Buzzard married the love of his life Betty Jean White June 20, 1962 in Miami, OK and she preceded him in death July 27, 2010.

Survivors include one son, Mark Buzzard and wife Bonnie, Wyandotte, OK; one daughter, Shelly Barnett and husband Orville, Seneca, MO; Grandchildren; Curt Buzzard and wife Andrea, Wyandotte, OK, Brandi Drake, Wyandotte and Bo Elliott, Seneca, great-grandchildren Chloe and Jairus Buzzard, Wyandotte and Heston Drake, Wyandotte; one brother, Jack Buzzard and wife Ella, Weir, KS.

Foster Hemingway Rice, infant son of Aaron and Beth Terry Rice, was stillborn Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Freeman West Hospital.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Fenton Rice of the home; paternal grandparents, Dennis and Cindy Rice of Rogers, AR; maternal grandparents, James and Denise Terry of Webb City; paternal great-grandparents, Hal and Ruth Roper of Joplin; paternal great-great-grandmother, Wilma Roper of Joplin; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

George Rogers

George L. Rogers, 83, passed away February 10, 2015 at Freeman Hospital, Joplin, MO. 

George was born July 14, 1931 in Galesburg, MO to George W. and Lucile “Briscoe” Rogers. Both have preceded him in death. George graduated from Carthage with the class of 1948 and then attended Joplin Junior College for a year. He was a longtime resident of Carthage after moving back to the area in 1990 to work as a clinical therapist for Willowcrest Hospital and Moccasin Bend Ranch Treatment Center in Miami. Ok and then for Heartland Hospital of Nevada, MO in their Joplin and Carthage clinics. Having obtained his licensure as a clinical social worker in 1993, George has been in private practice since 1994 first as owner and director of Carthage Family Counseling and currently as owner of Consultation Services in Carthage. Following high school George was employed for 10 years as a salesman and subsequent manager with A.Y. McDonald Mfg. of Joplin. In 1960 he moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma and owned and operated Elliott Rogers, Inc., for over 20 years which comprised Rogers Supply, Elliot Heating and Air Conditioning and Tuxedo Specialties and Investment. George decided to make a career change and by 1986 at the age of 55 he had completed his B.A. in social Work and Psychology and earned a Masters in Social Work from Oklahoma University. While attending school in Norman he managed The Willows Complex for the disabled, an independent living center associated with the United Cerebral Palsy of Oklahoma. 

George married Geneva Huercamp in 1951 in Carthage, MO, and to this union are two daughters Mary Matthews and husband Jim of Tulsa, Virginia Christy and husband Mike of Vinita, two sons Thomas Rogers and wife Tricia of Vacaville, CA, and Weston Rogers and wife Lorinda of Richardson, Texas, six grandchildren Jonathan Rogers, Vanessa Rogers, Kathryn Sutton, Charity Bardell, Rachel Christy and Hannah Christy and three great grandchildren. 

George was united in marriage to Cindy “Meek” Rogers September 1994 in Miami, OK. She survives. George had a heart for helping people. This attribute, along with his spirit of generosity and quick wit will be missed by many. 

The family will receive friends at BYKOTA church in Carthage on Saturday, February 28th at 10:30 am. A memorial service will follow at the church at 11:30 am. Nora Parrish

Nora Pauline Browning Parrish passed away at Spring River Christian Village in Joplin, Mo. on February 5, 2015 at the age of 101. 

She was born March 19, 1913 to the late Frank and Beulah Browning in French Lick Springs, Indiana. She grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. On May 7, 1937 she was married to Lawrence W. Parrish in Louisville, Ky. They lived in Pittsburg, Pa., Kansas City, Mo., and Bella Vista, Ar. before moving to Spring River Christian Village in Joplin in 1988. Mr. Parrish was deceased in 1995. Nora was a member of College Heights Christian Church. P.E.O. Chapter GA, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. 

She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. She is survived by a son, Gene Parrish of Burbank, Ca., a daughter Pat Ganser and husband Leroy of Leawood, Ks., granddaughters Gail Ganser and husband Craig Tiller of Forest, Va. and Karen Ganser of Shawnee, Ks., and four great-grandchildren. 

There will be a memorial service at the chapel of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory on February 21, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with Alan Britnall & Rick Bushnell officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. Memorials may be made to College Heights Christian Church or Ozark Christian College in Joplin. Nora lived independently until the age of 97, and was blessed by her many friends of all ages. The family wishes to thank the staff at Spring River Christian Village for their care and compassion. A special thanks goes to Mom’s band of angels, who continually showered her with cards, treats and visits. She was truly loved, and will be greatly missed.

Janice Faubion

Janice Eliene Faubion, age 76, of Jasper, Missouri passed away Sunday, February 15, 2015, at Landmark Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

Jan was born January 8, 1939, in Oakland Illinois, to Morris and Beatrice (Cox) Coon. After High School, she served her country in the United States Air Force 1959 until 1961 and then the Army National Guard 1977 until 1988 and was a Major in the Army Nurse Corp. She received her Bachelor of Science Business Administration and was also able to earn her RN degree. On July 1, 1960, she married Carroll Dean Faubion and he preceded her in death on October 25, 1999. Jan was a voracious reader, an avid fan of Big 10 college sports and the Dallas Cowboys. She enjoyed knitting and had won several first place awards from the Lamar Fair entries.

Jan leaves behind two sons, Chris (Marsha) Faubion, Joplin, Geoff (Kelly) Faubion, Jasper; one daughter, Sandy (Kelly) Peterson, Joplin; one sister Sandy Shigiyama, Tokyo, Japan; five grandchildren, Krista, Raul & wife Liz, Morgan & wife Shayla, Brett, & Chelsea; two great grandchildren, Kale & Leighton.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Carroll, and two brothers, Marshall & Richard Coon; and a brother-in-law, Toshio Shigiyama.

Memorial service will be 6:00 pm Friday, February 20, 2015 at Daniel Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service. There will be a private family burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Bertha Louise Barnes, age 77, of Lamar, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

Bertha was born October 20, 1937 in Jasper County, Missouri, the ninth of the ten children of Chesley and Ina Marie (Rosebrough) Cook. She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Hal, J.C., George, and Carl Cook.

After graduating from Sarcoxie High School in 1955, Bertha worked for a short time as a key punch operator for the telephone company and a seamstress at Big Smith. On February 24, 1956, at her parents’ home, Bertha married Charles Louis Barnes and they made their home in Jasper County and Osceola before moving to Lamar in 1970. In addition to caring for her family as a devoted homemaker, wife and mother, many others benefited from her genuine concern and positive attitude at her part-time jobs at Chastain’s Nursing Home and First Baptist Church. Bertha was a gifted pianist and artist who enjoyed tole painting and flower gardening. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Lamar.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 59 years, Charlie, of the home; two sons and their wives, Gary & Joleen Barnes, Lamar, and Gregg & Machelle Barnes, Round Rock, Texas; three brothers, John (Theo) Cook, Joplin, Wendell “Chick” (Helen) Cook, Yuba City, California, Robert (Barbara) Cook, Carl Junction; two sisters, Velma McBride, Carthage and Mary Walker, Lamar; two additional surviving sisters-in-law, Lorie Cook, Fort Scott, Kansas and Dixie Cook-Mason, Carthage; and a large extended family. Bertha delighted in her four grandchildren, Mandy (Jason) Rouse, Lamar, Zach Barnes, Warrensburg, Rebekah Barnes and Caleb Barnes, both of Round Rock, Texas, and her two great-granddaughters, Hannah Marie Rouse and Danica Lynn Barnes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 19th at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to First Baptist Church Building Fund or American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
