Stephen Doubledee

(From Ozark Memorial Park Crematory)

Stephen Lynn Doubledee, age 72, went to be with the Lord on October 24, 2024. He was born on the family farm near Medoc, Missouri on October 31, 1951, to George and Jaunda (Harrel) Doubledee. He married Ruby (Winkler) Doubledee on April 11, 1982. They were together and inseparable in their nearly 43 years.

He is survived by his wife Ruby Doubledee, of the home, daughter Jennifer (Josh) Whiteside of Nevada, MO, son Enoch (Annette) Doubledee of Grapevine, TX, and daughter Micah Doubledee of Lamar, MO. He had one grandchild, Adhn Whiteside.

Additional survivors include one sister, Lois Reynolds, two brothers, Melvin Doubledee and Mike Doubledee, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was proceeded in death by his parents, brothers John Doubledee and Lehi Doubledee, and his cousin Craig Doubledee, who was his closest friend.

Stephen had many occupations throughout his life. He was a life-long farmer, a truck driver, construction worker, factory worker, and school bus driver. He played Santa at the Carl Junction Schools for nine-years and enjoyed mentoring the many children who rode his bus.

He spoke of his love of the Lord daily with anyone who would listen. He researched many different religious affiliations throughout his life and found brothers and sisters in Christ within all of them. He was a minister who believed each person should have their own personal relationship with the Lord.
He enjoyed fishing, outdoor life, driving super-bomber racecars, tractor pulls, car shows, and bluegrass festivals. One of his many passions was preservation of local history and he belonged to the Jasper County Cemetery Preservation Society. One of his projects was preservation of the Medoc Community Square.

His primary love was his family and farming. He found a special joy in every day. His sense of adventure and love for life was contagious.

He needed to personally determine if each vehicle he owned could burn rubber and station wagons were not exempt. Short duration stop-light drag races were common and often occurred when the other driver did not know the race was happening. He would clench the steering wheel tight, put on his “race face”, rev the engine, bark the tires, and belly-laugh with joy.

His grandson Adhn understood time with Papa would always be fun, and that many times Adhn would need to be the “responsible” one in their adventures. Their adventures were many. He did not know a stranger and made friends everywhere he went. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at the Twin Groves Events Center on Saturday, November 9, 2024. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, Services at 2:00, with additional visitation to follow.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ozark Memorial Park of Joplin, MO.

Valerie McNabb

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

Valerie Jean McNabb left her earthly home in the pre dawn hours of Octrober 24th, 2024. She lived 67 years before succumbing to the effects of multiple illnesses.

She was preceded in her departure by her brother, Warren Scott McNabb and her mother, Geraldine McNabb. She is survived in this life by her children, Beverly (Beth) Spencer and Daniel Spencer, her grandson, Lane Spencer, her father, Warren Neil McNabb, her sister, Neeve Venezuela, her nieces and nephew - Neala, Joel, Arika, Ashley and Jasmine, several beloved aunts, an uncle, cousins and a devoted sister and brother in law.

Valerie, the middle child of Gerry and Neil, was born in Albuquerque, NM, on, December 28th, 1956.

Her father's career with Raytheon allowed the family to experience life outside of the U.S. where Valerie attended elementary school in Germany, and high school in Tehran, Iran.

She told her children stories of the homey, welcoming, sense of community she experienced in Germany. Her fondest memory was walking through their small neighborhood towing a little wagon. Mothers along the street would come out of their homes and ask Valerie to take a variety of gifts to her parents like the memorable sweet treats that she has never been able to duplicate..

Valerie was driven to provide for her family and did so by obtaining a bachelor's degree in accounting. She did well in her chosen career. However, to the delight of her children, she repeatedly expressed that she actually wanted to be a racecar driver.

The last few decades of Valerie's life were defined by illness. Though her time and energy were focused differently, she never faltered in her curiosity, love of life, and the endless well of love she has always had for her family.

Valerie's sister, Neeve, encapsulated her personality by describing her as "beautiful, amazing, loving and goofy." Her grandson, Lane, so very accurately said she was "full of light and joy." Her Aunt Mary echoed in describing Valerie, as "full of sparkle." All of this is true.

She has always had an indescribable quality to her that makes you want to be near her, that draws you to her.

I will forever be grateful for the incredible and humbling privilege it is to be her daughter. To be allowed to learn from her, grow with her, laugh with her, and care for her is something I will treasure, always. I think my brother, Daniel, said it best. "She is definitely the best mom in the world."

We share the unshakable belief that death merely separates the spirit and soul from the physical body. So I shall continue to speak of her in the present tense as it is merely her body that has ceased to function. The essence of who she is will always remain and live on.

She still loves, she still laughs, she still remains near us. Just as our love for her will remain present tense, never past.

Lorri Guison

(From Derfelt Funeral Home)

Lorri Ann Guison, age 65, suddenly passed away at 7:16 pm, Friday, October 25, 2024, at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburg, KS.

She was born January 14, 1959, in Columbus, KS, to her parents Robert Lewis "Bob" and Edith Janene (Robinson) Brumback. Most of her life was adventured around the Scammon/Columbus area.

Over the years, Lorri became a jack of all trades. Her abilities to pick up anything she set her mind to introduced her to multiple skill sets which included being a seamstress at Garment Factory in Columbus, KS, and a cook at Cornerstone Village in Pittsburg, KS. Other careers included Able Body in Pittsburg, Ks, NCO Call Center in Joplin, MO, and Sugar Creek Manufacturing in Pittsburg, Ks.

After she retired, the work did not stop there. Lorri kept her mind and body on the go by volunteering to be the chef at any family gatherings, attempting to teach several nieces how to cook without setting the house ablaze, crafting memorial flowers, sowing curtains and an unlimited amount of clothing for the grandchildren, great grandchildren, and anyone who was in a panic when the dress was to long or didn’t fit.

From baby shower cupcakes to homemade Halloween spaceships, Lorri got the job done. To say Lorri was a cook would be an understatement. Her cooking skills were legendary. Lucky for most of the community, she was as much of a giver as a nurturer. During the holiday season, she would make enough goodies to take around town stopping in at the local post offices, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Dept, and everywhere along the way.

When she was young, she accepted the lord as her savior and her siblings followed in the coming years. Lorri and her siblings were members at the family Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus, Ks. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and her fur-babies named Anastasia and Cup Cake, especially during the holidays.

Lorri's most treasured legacy was one of family. She loved people, and the moment you met her, you became part of her tribe. Those of you who didn’t get the chance to meet her have surely missed one of the biggest blessings in life. From baby showers and birthdays to every holiday, Lorri radiated joy and love, which was expressed in her soulful cooking and contagious laugh. If there was ever a candidate to be a guardian angel, Lorri would surely be at the top of that list. Her biggest accomplishments in life are the many loved ones she will one day reunite with.

Lorri married Tim Hill on July 7, 1989, who tragically preceded her in death on February 4, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Robert David Brumback of Riverton, Ks, and his daughter Alicia Marie.

Lorri met Steven Edward Guison, her best friend and partner in Halloween pranks, in 1994. They married on February 29, 2016, in Miami, OK. He survives.

Additional survivors include one son, Tim Hill of Springfield, MO; two stepsons, Casey Guison (Julie), and Cory Guison (Yvette), both of West Mineral, KS . Two grandsons, Devon Guison ( Lauren) of Pittsburg and Nathan Guison; three granddaughters, Cheyenne Guison, Ashlynn Guison and Kortnie Guison; and three great-grandchildren. Her younger sister, Lesa Schroeder (Gaylan), Severy, KS, and their two daughters, niece Kacy Barnes (Gabe), Olathe, KS, and niece Jewel Skinner (Bobby,) Parkville, KS, two great nephews, and another baby on the way. Then her brother Robert’s children a niece, Gina Harvey (Josh), Columbus, Ks, and two nephews, David Brumback (Juanita) Joplin, MO the couple’s three children, and Jaret Brumback McCune, KS.

Her memory will live on in all the lives of her loved ones.

“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die"- John 11 25-26.

A Celebration of Life will take place November 16, 2024, 3 p.m.-5 p.m. Calvary Baptist Church 625 E. Sycamore Street Columbus, Ks 66725.
