Jody Curtis

(From Ulmer Funeral Home)

Joyce “Jody” Alane Hatfield-Curtis, age 74, of Jasper, Missouri, peacefully left this earth on Friday, December 20, 2024. Jody, as she was known, was born on June 25, 1950, to the late King S. Asbell and Bonnie G. Asbell. Jody was the youngest of 4 children and was a lifelong resident of the area.

On June 4, 1966, Jody Asbell became the bride of James R. Hatfield Sr. in a double ring ceremony in Joplin, Missouri. They began their married life in Carthage, Missouri, then several years later moved to Jasper, Missouri. There, Jody and James raised their children, made many friends and worked hard to provide a good life for their family. James proceeded Jody in death on June 25, 2003.

For several years, Jody continued to work at the Jasper popcorn plant until her retirement. Jody was an avid reader of Stephen King; and she loved all genres of music from AC/DC to Johnny Cash to Rob Zombie. She loved going to the casinos and sometimes coming home with winnings. But, most of all Jody loved her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. Jody enjoyed spending time with her family any chance she could get.

In August 2020, Jody found her second wind when she met Rob Curtis. When the two met one another, it was instant fireworks as well as laughter. Rob unmercifully always teased Jody about one thing or another, and Jody always gave it right back. The two of them enjoyed going Crappie fishing. There are plenty of stories of Jody falling as she’s getting into the boat, getting the fishing line caught on a tree or breaking Rob‘s poles. But they always laughed about those incidents.

On June 17, 2023, Jody became the bride of Rob Curtis. The two of them built a lovely home together, with much laughter, much love and many, many family gatherings. Rob and Jody loved to listen to 1950’s and 60’s music. They spent many a night dancing the night away. Over the past 4 years Jody laughed, loved and lived life her way, enjoying every minute of the ride.

Jody is survived by her husband Rob Curtis; her three children, Tracy (Teri) Hatfield of Webb City, Missouri; James (Gina) Hatfield of Jasper, Missouri and Clayton Hatfield of Jasper, Missouri.

Jody loved her grandchildren, Alanea (Joshua) Tosh, Carthage, Missouri; Jesse Vance, Neosho, Missouri; Mason Hatfield and Madelyn Hatfield Jasper, Missouri. Jody had twin great grandsons, James and Jacob Tosh Carthage, Missouri.

Extended family, Brother-in-Law Mike (Karen) Curtis, Missouri; lifelong son Larry Graham, Oklahoma; niece Geneia Morgan, Jody’s wing woman, confidant and second daughter and son Jordan Case, Joplin, Missouri; niece Lynn (Scott) Ratley, Joplin, Missouri, and children Chasity (Mike) Gray, Sarcoxie, Missouri and Jonathon Ashworth, Joplin, Missouri.

There will be a funeral service for Jody at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Ulmer Funeral Home. A visitation will be held the previous night from 6:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at Ulmer Funeral Home. The burial will take place at Water’s Cemetery immediately after the service.
Condolences may be made at www.ulmerfh.com.

Henry Williams

(From Parker Mortuary)

Henry Magers Williams, age 41, died on December 18, 2024, after a long illness. He was born on November 9, 1983, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, the wonderful second son of Steve and Sarah (Magers) Williams.

Additional survivors include his nephews (Bodey Gilette, Jordan Wilson, Jayden McGuire, Owen Williams, Charlie Williams and Liam Williams) and nieces (Paloma Thorp-Bernal, Molly Williams, Kinsley Wilson, Ada Williams and Emma Williams). He is also survived by an aunt, an uncle, and three cousins.

Henry was a gentle giant standing six-three and blessed with a bushy red beard. We remember his quick, dry wit and generosity. He was a talented artist and loved camping. He was a fan of “anything Chicago” and an avid collector of Chicago Blackhawks, White Sox, Cubs and Bears memorabilia.

At 21 he was diagnosed with schizophrenia which robbed the world of the gifts he would have undoubtedly contributed. Despite many hard times over the years, he and his family never gave up on each other. When he drew his last breath, he was surrounded by his parents and brothers. In his last few days on earth Henry said that it would be great to wake up in heaven and be able to breathe.

Henry had chosen to be an organ donor, his last gift to others. His kidneys have already gone to two recipients to give them and their families another chance at life. Others will benefit from the donation of his corneas and heart valves. And so, he lives on.

The remainder of his body has been cremated. His family and friends will celebrate his life in the near future.

Tony Oxford

(From Ozark Funeral Home)

Anthony (Tony) Wayne Oxford passed away on December 18, 2024, after suffering for many years with asthma and pulmonary distress. Tony, first born to Charles and Patricia Oxford, entered this world on August 31, 1966 in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Tony was a 1984 graduate of McDonald County High School. The class of 1984 had seven number one ranking students. It will be no surprise to anyone that Tony was one of those seven high-achieving students. He was in ROTC, track, and numerous other activities. He furthered his education on scholarship at the University of Arkansas, graduating in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Business with a major in Finance. Later in 2003, he obtained a Masters in Business Administration as part of the Executive MBA program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

His career began with Cooper Communities in Bella Vista/ Rogers. There he started as an Account Representative around 1991 and worked his way up through the ranks in Finance. He served in various capacities, including financial analyst, cash manager, and financial service manager. In 1999 he was promoted to Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer/Chief Information Officer with Cooper Realty Investments, Inc. where he remained until 2004. After this, he provided private financial consultation services to various businesses.

Tony was a patriot and loved his country. He began his service to the nation in high school by joining ROTC. It was his deepest desire to attend the Naval Academy. Sadly, he would later find out that an eye injury and a slight loss of hearing would keep this dream from becoming reality. However, he did not give up, he changed his path and pressed onward. He joined the Oklahoma National Guard in the 45th Infantry Brigade and became a Major. He, unwilling, had to leave the National Guard due to the onset of asthma.

Tony’s quest for knowledge was never-ending. It is no surprise that his favorite activities were reading, hiking, traveling and cooking. He also appreciated a good cause and was honored to have served on the Board of Directors for the Helen Walton Children’s Center.

As Tony reunites with his beloved parents and grandparents, his remaining family and friends will greatly miss him. Especially his niece and nephew. He will always be the best Uncle ever.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date.

June Schipper

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

June Marion Schipper, 93, a Dothan, Alabama native, and longtime Crookston, Minnesota resident, passed away at Spring River Christian Village in Joplin, Missouri on Saturday, December 21, 2024.

June was born in Dothan on March 19,1931 and was the daughter of Jack and Eula (Seaborn) Segler. She graduated from Dothan High School in 1949 and went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Alabama's University of Montevallo in 1953. She returned to her hometown after graduation and taught at Dothan High School during the 1953-54 school term.

On June 12,1954, June was united in marriage to Vance Duane Schipper in Dothan. Ready for whatever in life awaited her, she came with Vance to his hometown of Crookston, Minnesota, settling on a farm Vance had purchased in Parnell Township. The next several years would see their family grow with the addition of four little ones: Ila, Quinn, Vana, and Leah.

Even with the demands of her roles as wife and mom, June found time to teach for a term in 1957-58 at the Fisher (MN) High School, and later work as a copywriter for KROX Radio in Crookston from 1966 until 1977. For a period of time during the late 1970's she served as an assistant teacher for Crookston's Head Start program. June's lifelong love of literature naturally brought her to employment with the Crookston Public Library, part of the Lake Agassiz Regional Library system, where she worked from 1979 until retirement. Later on, she became an RSVP volunteer there. In 2008, June was named Volunteer of the Year by the Friends of the Library.

She dedicated many years of her life to the Crookston Community Theater, serving on the Board, doing grant writing, acting, and working with the stage crew. In February of 1999 she and Vance were honored by the City of Crookston as Experienced Americans. She and Vance moved from their farmstead to a new home just outside Crookston in 2005. In 2020, June moved to Webb City, Missouri to be nearer to her children.

June was a devoted member of the Church of Christ in Crookston. For many years she served as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, and church organist. She was also very active for years in the Christian Women's Fellowship and Mission Study. In Missouri, June attended Connect Christian Church of Carl Junction where she was active in Sunday School and a Ladies’ Home Bible Study.

June liked the challenge of doing crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble. It came as no surprise that she was an avid reader; but it was rather amusing to note that she also enjoyed the newspaper comic strips, which she called the "funny papers." June and Vance enjoyed traveling, and very special to them were trips made to New Zealand and Hawaii. She had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor and always saw the good in people. June found great joy in her family and taught them about love, faith, commitment, honesty, humor, and compassion.

Left to mourn June’s passing are her four children: Ila (Luis) Martinez of Wylie, TX, Quinn (Becky) Schipper of Bartlesville, OK, Vana (Peter) Buckland of Webb City, MO, and Leah (Steve) Hanson of Chetopa, KS; five grandchildren: Casey Pahlen, Madison Schipper, Audrey Buckland, Austin Buckland, and Alex (Sierra) Buckland; eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Sidney B. Segler; one sister-in-law: Audrey Schipper Murphy; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. June was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Vance, her parents, Jack and Eula Segler; Vance’s parents, Ed and Sylvia Schipper; two brothers-in-law: Dale Schipper and Burl Schipper: three sisters-in-law, Jean Segler, LaVada Schipper Hanson, and Walda Schipper, and one granddaughter, Brenna Kelley.

June’s and Vance’s cremains will be inurned together at Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston, Minnesota. A celebration of June’s life will be held at a future time. Memorials may be given in June’s memory to a charity of your choice.

Sondra Hilker

After several days of heartache and sadness, we share the news of the passing of our beloved mother, Sondra D. Hilker, 78, of Diamond, MO.

She passed away at Joplin Gardens on December 17, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was the center of our world, a dedicated mother; our rock whom we could lean on. Words cannot convey how much she is and will be missed.

Our mom was born April 29, 1946, to Ardella and Elmer Lawson. She came from a large family. She was one of 9 children. Her fondest memories were growing up in Verona, MO, with her brothers and sisters. She married our dad, George Ottendorf, and from that union came 4 kids. After his passing, she went on to marry our stepfather, Larry Hilker, who helped her raise us until his death in 1997.

Our mother was known for her strong work ethic, retiring from La-Z-Boy after 36 years, only to go back to work at Walmart for another 10 years to have something to do. She always wanted to retire on the beach somewhere.

Her final years were spent bravely battling dementia with her family by her side. Those were precious days for us. She believed in God and looked forward to seeing her heavenly family. She was certain we would all be together again one day.

She is survived by her daughters, Sherry Castor, Michelle Ottendorf, Connie Tanner, and her son, George James Jr. Ottendorf. She had 9 grandchildren, Kyle, Carrie, Conner, Jessica, Justin, Tosha, Jazmyn, Hayden, Gracie, and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Darlene Cox, Carolyn Forrester, and Della Housh. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, John Lawson, Bob Lawson, Don Lawson, and her sisters, Norma Warner and Karron Beck.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Joplin Gardens and Regional Hospice for their incredible care and compassion towards our mother in her final days.

We are honoring our mother’s final wish to be cremated. Graveside services will be held at a later date.

Judy May

(From Derfelt Funeral Home)

Judy Kay May passed away in Lowell, Kansas, surrounded by her family, on December 15, 2024, after a long battle with dementia. She was a loved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, neighbor, and friend to those who knew her.

Judy was born on October 25, 1941 in Joplin, Missouri to Carl Kenneth Underwood (Kenny) Vergie Louise Banning (Peggy.) She graduated from Baxter Springs High School.

As a teenager, Judy worked at the Twilight Drive-in for a few summers and then at a local fireworks stand, where she met, and fell in love with her future husband, Don May. They married February 23, 1958. They lived in the Riverton/Lowell, Kansas area for nearly all of their 66 and a half years of marriage. They lived a simple life, raised their three children there, modeling loyalty and instilling a strong work ethic. They enjoyed spending time with their couples friends, eating out, traveling on his motorcycle, hosting big family gatherings, sitting in their yard, but mostly just being together. They were inseparable.

Judy was an energetic and dedicated homemaker while her children were growing up. She very much valued our education and was actively involved in Riverton Schools, volunteering as a homeroom mother for each child, as well as being an active member of the PTA. She also served as a Girl Scout leader. In the summers, Judy enjoyed taking her kids to Five Mile to picnic and swim for the day with other moms and friends. She would later use her time working locally in banking and bookkeeping as well as helping care for her aging parents and grandparents.

Judy loved all animals, but especially horses…from her time spent playing cowboys & Indians as a young girl, listening to country music on the radio all day and every day, collecting western memorabilia, dressing in western clothing, watching western movies, riding in the Calamity Janes Drill Team, to convincing Dad to take her to the big Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo in Wyoming, and eventually, even a Carousel Horse Convention.
