Nick Johannes

(From Knell Mortuary)

Nicholas Shelton Johannes, “Nick”, entered eternal rest on April 7, 2025. Born October 9, 1951, in Carthage, Missouri, the son of Jack and Carolyn (Frost) Johannes. Nick's life was a tapestry woven with devotion to his family, and his community.

Nick's early years were spent in the town of his birth, where he attended Carthage High School, graduating in 1969. Nick then attended Southwest Missouri State University (Springfield) and Missouri Southern State College (Joplin), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. This passion for understanding life's intricacies charted the course for his future, guiding him into a career as an environmental and safety engineer. A career that spanned over five decades, Nick's dedication to his profession was unwavering, culminating in his retirement in 2022.

At the heart of Nick's life was his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife Julia (Smith) Johannes, who he met on a blind date while in college and a loving father to his daughter Nicole Willoughby and her husband Mark. His role as grandfather to Tori and Addison Willoughby brought him immeasurable joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Nick's love extended to his mother, Carolyn Johannes, his brother Jack Allen Johannes, and his sisters, Janette Johannes and Annette Johannes-Seyle, all of whom shared in the richness of his life. His sister-in-law Connie Wilson, along with her husband Brad, also held a special place in Nick's heart. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Johannes, who no doubt instilled in him the values of hard work and integrity that he carried throughout his life.

Nick's contributions to his community were significant and multifaceted. He served as Vice President of the Ozark Mountain Cutting Horse Association for over a decade and was a proud member of both the National Cutting Horse Association and the American Quarter Horse Association. His commitment to his community was further demonstrated through his service as County Commissioner for the Jasper County Special Road District. Nick attended First United Methodist Church of Carthage, where his faith and fellowship were integral parts of his life.

Beyond his professional and civic engagements, Nick had a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures in life. He found solace in helping others, a hobby that mirrored his selfless nature. His affinity for animals was evident in his pastime of showing horses and raising Australian Shepherd dogs, as well as Santa Gertrudis and Red Angus cattle. These activities not only brought him closer to nature but also to the people who shared his interests.

Lori Curry

(From Parker Mortuary)

Cynthia "Lori" Curry, 56, passed away on April 2, 2025, in Willard, Missouri. She was born on May 18, 1968 to the late Brian Gene Curry and Pearline Ellen (Watkins) Curry."Lori" was a precious gift from God. She was born perfectly healthy. She brought a great deal of joy to our parents.

When she was several months old, she became ill. The doctor at the time told our mother that she was, "a young dumb mother who didn't know how to take care of a sick baby." On Christmas Eve night, when "Lori" was only seven months old, our father carried his baby girl into the hospital as she was having multiple seizures. "Lori" had contracted spinal meningitis which left her with significant brain damage and a condition known as Cerebral Palsy.

"Lori" would never walk or run, she would never play with other children, never marry or have children. But, none of that ever robbed her of her joy. She was the light in the room everywhere she went. She did have her favorites in people and at times that was dependent on how forthcoming you were with getting her the things she wanted at any given moment. She had a sense of humor and loved giving people a hard time. She had a cunning smile and a wink that let you know you were targeted, she had your number.

"Lori" loved many things. Baby dolls, M&M's, Dollar bills, and Coffee are among some of her most treasured things. She always loved to see babies and small children. Her eyes would light up at the sight of them, exclaiming, "Ahh, Cute!"

While "Lori" never dated nor married she did have two great love affairs in life. For the grand majority of her life, she had a tremendous fondness for Randy Travis. That was until he got old. Then her interests shifted to an obsession with Luke Bryan.

The past two years have been the most difficult of her journey through life. However, she is firmly in the arms of Jesus, running the streets of gold, playing and laughing, hugging our momma and daddy, and drinking all the coffee, tea, and POP she wants, (if those things are permitted in Heaven.) We can celebrate her life in jealousy of her great reward.

"Lori" is survived by her two younger brothers, Phillip Tyree Curry of Willard, MO, and Aaron Patrick Curry of Seneca, MO, and their respective families.

Along with her parents, "Lori" was preceded in death by her older brother, James Allen Kearnes.
This final remark may likely upset a great many people but to those who knew our family the most and were around our father and "Lori" over the years, it will make perfect sense. "Goodbye Lori, you silly heifer. We love you!"

A Celebration of Life is planned for Sunday, May 18, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. at Hornet Christian Church in Seneca, MO.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lori's Memorial Fund or by bringing a baby doll that can be given to children with disabilities in group homes in the Joplin regional area. Please contact Ty Curry directly at lifeguard4christ@gmail.com or by calling him at 417-621-1718.

The family would like to express a deeply heartfelt gratitude for all the many people who have been directly involved with Lori's care over the past 56 years.
