Donald Joseph Thorn, beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and long-time resident of Joplin, MO, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 6:50 a.m., at Joplin Health and Rehab where he had been a resident.
Don was born on January 25, 1949, in Dubuque, IA at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital the eldest of four children born to the late Roy W. Thorn Jr. and Marjorie M. Thorn, of Joplin, MO.
While growing up and attending School in Diamond, MO, his parents instilled hard work, responsibilities, and values in his life. Don excelled in his education, sports, lettering in baseball, track, basketball, developing his mechanical aptitude, and playing the cornet in band, even constructing an electric guitar in shop. His love for the sciences, including chemistry would play a major role in his life. Winning local, regional, and national science fairs for his work in chemistry. As a junior at Diamond High School, he was one of the Winners of the National Science Fair and was awarded the Navy Science Cruise Program Tour and was flown to Norfolk, VA, to tour the Naval Installations, a Navy submarine, and given a two-day cruise on one of their destroyers.
Both his parents were involved in the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, in Diamond and helped support their children’s endeavors. Don earned his Eagle Scout Rank, signifying the highest level of achievement and demonstrating leadership, service, and commitment to his community. He traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico and backpacked and trekked into the mountains, for over a week becoming one of the million scouts, ventures, and leaders from around the globe to accomplish that. When Don wasn’t attending school, or school activities you would find him working a multitude of jobs from an early age.
Upon his Graduation in 1967, he attended College of the Ozarks, where he participated in their work-education program to cover the cost of his education, room, and board, allowing students to graduate debt-free.
After his Family re-located to Henry, IL, Don worked with his dad at W.R. Grace and Company as a Chemist, continuing his education at Illinois Valley Community College.
In 1969 he was Drafted and Proudly Served in the Army, obtaining the Rank of Sargent E-5, in the Special Forces during the Vietnam War. He received the National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Bronze Service Stars; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Combat Infantryman Badge Expert (Rifle).
Following his Honorable discharge from the Army, in 1971, he headed to Duncan, OK, to work as a Chemist for Haliburton Oil Company. While there he received two Patents for his works and continued his education at Cameron College. He was an active member of the local Jaycees and Chamber of Commerce and donated his time and money to several local Non-Profits and Charities.
His entrepreneurial spirit led him into purchasing and rehabbing a multitude of houses and properties which he eventually sold and purchased land to develop and manage a small shopping center for his construction company, swimming pool company, landscape company, his convenience store – “Mr. T’s”, a car wash, storage building, and additional rental store fronts. His swimming pool company won national acclaim for his pool designs and landscaping, being awarded the top Honors by Ed McMahon.
After selling the shopping center complex and businesses, he relocated to Joplin, MO and was hired as an International Consultant to design and develop big box stores for overseas companies, owned by several Royal Families, living there and traveling back and forth as needed to the states.
With the completion of his overseas contracts, Don setout to Dallas, TX, where he worked for The Solutions Company, as a Human Resources Business Partner, then for Dial Thru International Corporation, as the Corporate Director of Human Resources. He was a Business Partner in McKittrick, Thorn & Associates, HRBMC Financial Services and owned and operated Majestic Embroidering, suppling embroidered items for several national companies.
Eventually relocating back to Joplin, MO to spend time with his parents, he acquired his realtor and insurance licenses and worked for Charles Burt Reality of Joplin, completing his Education at MSSU and receiving his Bachelor’s Degree. After the devastating tornado of 2011, which he lost the majority of his possessions he retired to concentrate on taking care of his parents.
He loved traveling, including cruises, watching his favorite team the Dallas Cowboys, and playing cards. Tending to his garden, yardwork, landscaping, the serenity of nature, reading and studying his bible, and helping friends and family with their many projects and taking care of his ageing parents. Having faced many obstacles in his life his favorite quote was: "It's a great life, if you don't weaken," which was attributed to John Buchan, a Scottish author, and is often used as a motivational phrase to encourage resilience in the face of adversity.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Roy W. Thorn Jr. and Marjorie M. Thorn.
He is survived by his children; Stacy L. Provenzano and husband Joshua, of Duncan, OK, Lindsay D. Boyett and husband Chasten, of Oklahoma City, OK, four grandchildren; Keely Thorn and Jaxon Provenzano, of Duncan OK, Luke Wood and Zara Boyett, of Oklahoma City, OK and one great-grandchild; Cali Gueera, of Duncan, OK.
One sister; Pamala J. Carrier and husband Dennis, of Joplin, MO, two brothers; Roy W. Thorn III and wife Kendra, of Kansas City, MO, Mike R. Thorn and wife Lee Ann, of Bartlesville, OK. Several nieces and nephews; Brandi Heinz and husband Michael, of Washington, DC, Tiffney Testerman and husband Nicholas, of Joplin, MO, Ryan Thorn, of New York City, NY, Mark Thorn and Craig Thorn, of Bartlesville, OK, Megan Norman and husband Joey, of Kansas City, MO, and great nieces and nephews; Lillian Testerman, and Josephine Testerman, of Joplin, MO, and Luke Norman and Jase Norman, of Kansas City, MO.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 12, with funeral services starting at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 12 at Mason-Woodard Mortuary, of Joplin, to Honor and Celebrate his Life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
