Thomas Douglass

(From Knell Mortuary)

Thomas Jensenius Douglass, 95, Carthage, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 31, 2025, at St. Luke’s Nursing Center, Carthage. He was born on August 25, 1930, in Bristol, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Thomas B. Douglass and Karen (Jensenius) Douglass. Thomas's life was marked by his loving nature, friendly demeanor, and remarkable intelligence.

Thomas was a proud graduate of Lebanon High School, class of 1948, and carried his passion for learning and education throughout his life. He furthered his academic journey at Penn State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, a field in which he excelled and received numerous accolades. His career as a chemical engineer was distinguished by his dedication and innovation, contributing significantly to the industry.

Thomas married the love of his life, Rose Marie Frye, on September 13, 1952, in Pennsylvania, and together they shared 71 years of marriage full of love and wonderful memories until her passing on January 22, 2024.

Beyond his professional achievements, Thomas was deeply committed to his Christian faith, which guided him in all aspects of his life. He was a member of the Gideons and attended many Christian churches in the area. He found joy in teaching and was known for his ability to connect with and inspire his students, whether as a substitute high school teacher in Carthage or while teaching English to Spanish speakers in the same community. His love for teaching was paralleled only by his love for nature. An avid gardener, Thomas's generosity was as abundant as the crops he cultivated. He took great pleasure in sharing the fruits of his labor, often donating buckets full of broccoli, potatoes, and tomatoes to the Salvation Army and St. Luke's Nursing Center. His apple orchard and the care he provided to his cows were testaments to his nurturing spirit and connection to the earth.

Thomas's legacy is carried on by his loving family, including his two sons, Robert Douglass and Eric Douglass; his grandchildren, Amanda Wolz (Brady), Caitlin Berding, Jon Douglass (Melissa), Daniel Douglass, and Michael Douglass; and his numerous great-grandchildren. His extended family and a multitude of friends also mourn his passing. He was also preceded in death by his son, Thomas Douglass.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 12 pm, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Park Cemetery, Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to Open Door Baptist Church in care of Knell Mortuary.
