Mary Ellis

Mary Lucille Ellis, 92, of Opolis, passed away at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, January 5, 2025 at Via Christi Village.

Mary Lucille Ellis was born March 26, 1932, in Pittsburg, Kansas to John Paul and Eleanor “Elner” Mae (Whitter) Oehme. Mary lived and worked in the Pittsburg, Opolis area her whole life.

 

She was united in marriage to Homer A. Ellis on May 22, 1948, in Pittsburg. They were married 62 years before his passing in 2011.

Homer and Mary held membership in the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg. They owned and operated Ellis Greenhouse and Nursery for 30 years. After selling the greenhouse, she worked in Dillion’s Floral Department and later at VanBeceleare’s Greenhouse. Mary loved working with all the plants and flowers and enjoyed teaching people about how to care for them.

She is survived by her son, Jeffrey W. Ellis of Oplis, Kansas; two daughters, Vicky Henderson (Dave) of Grove OK. And Kelley Ellis of Asbury, MO; a granddaughter, Kristy M. Sailors (Bill) of Texas; two grandsons, Nathan R. Watson of Pittsburg, KS and Jarod W. Watson of Weir, KS; a great-granddaughter, Carlie Caldwell (Zach) of Pittsburg; five great-great-grandchildren, Mason, Hadley, Stella, Palmer, and Quinn; two nephews, Justin L. Steeley (Chau) and Todd Mathew Steeley; a great-nephew Cole Matthew Steeley; a niece, Joi L. (Ellis) Owen and a nephew Jerry L. Ellis (Cynthia) of Illinois.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Homer A. Ellis, her parents, John P. and Eleanor M. Oehme, her sister, Donna K. Steeley, a granddaughter, Terri A. Gintner, and a great-great granddaughter, Saylor Grace Caldwell.

 

A Memorial Mass will be 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 10th, 2025 in the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Caleb Kuestersteffen as celebrant. A parish rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, January 9th, followed by a visitation until 7:30 pm at Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg, KS. Burial will take place at a later date in the Crocker Cemetery.

Shirley Brown

Shirley Ray Brown, age 75, born on March 28, 1949, to Raymond and Juanita (Epling) Lambert of Ohio, passed away on January 3, 2025, at Circle of Life in Bentonville, Arkansas, after several years of declining health. In her final hours, she was surrounded by her 6 children and devoted husband of 28 years, Rick Brown.

Shirley’s life was a testament to kindness, creativity, and resilience. A dedicated homemaker throughout her life, she went to great lengths to care for her family. 

Shirley possessed an extraordinary talent for sewing, transforming fabrics into beautifully crafted garments with unmatched skill and precision. Her creativity extended beyond sewing—she also enjoyed making crafts and drawing, finding joy in creating beauty with her hands.

In her younger years, Shirley delighted in cooking for others. She often rose in the early hours of the morning to prepare meals for her brothers and sons during hunting season. Time spent with her family brought Shirley immense happiness, particularly when she took her children camping by the creek or gathered with loved ones during special occasions. She was a mother figure to many and always enjoyed being a caregiver when she was able.

Christmas held a special place in Shirley’s heart; she adored the holiday season and found great joy in decorating and selecting thoughtful gifts for her loved ones. It was fitting that she had the opportunity to share one final Christmas surrounded by family. Shirley’s memory will live on through those who were touched by her kindness and creativity. May her legacy bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.

 

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, her late-husband, (Robert Staib), a grandson (Kade Clark), and a granddaughter (Rachael Staib). She is survived by her husband, Rick Brown, of Bentonville, AR; daughter, Amey (Robert) Burkett, of Pineville, MO; son, David (Janelle) Staib, of Pineville, MO; daughter, Sara (Tim) Burr, of Republic, MO; daughter, Christina (Scott) Elkins, of Lowell, AR; son, John (Amanda) Staib, of Pea Ridge, AR; and son, Ricky Lee Brown, of Granby, MO. She also leaves behind 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and a multitude of other family members who loved her dearly- including her brothers, sisters, and cousins.

A Memorial Gathering & Potluck will be held on Friday, January 10, from 6:00-8:00pm at the Pineville Community Center, 602 Jesse James Rd, Pineville, MO 64856. Please bring a dish for the potluck as her request was for us (ALL friends and family) to share a meal together.

Jake Snow

Jake McKinley Snow, age 35 of Oronogo, Missouri passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at his home. 

There are no words to describe how special Jake was as a human being. Jake was passionate about all forms of art including music, painting, sketching and had a magical perspective on life. 

Jake also had an unimaginable passion for learning everything there is to know about everything; literally. 

Jake spent most of his time studying the unknown, starving for more knowledge. Although Jake was a brilliant philosopher, he also enjoyed spending time in the outdoors and spending time with his family and friends. Jake was a loving father, uncle, brother, and son. 

Jake is survived by his son, Carter Snow, by the love of his life Katie and her daughter Piper, by his mother, Pamela Snow, by his father, Randall Snow, his sister, Jessica (Snow) Haynes, and his brother, Lucas Snow. 

Jake was also survived by several nieces, nephews, stepsiblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Family was extremely important to Jake. He was a brilliant, artistic, loving man with a huge heart. He will be dearly missed. We love you Jake. You will live on now only in our hearts.

Mikey Clemmer

Clarence Michael “Mikey” Clemmer, 65, of Carthage, passed away peacefully on December 17th, 2024, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin with his loved ones by his side. 

Mikey was born on July 24th, 1959, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of the late Clarence and Celia Clemmer. He spent his childhood years in Kansas City, Kansas and El Dorado Springs, Missouri. His family moved to Carthage Missouri when he was a teenager, and he stayed in Carthage for the remainder of his life. His dedication and hard work led him to a fulfilling career with Innovative Industries in Carthage, Missouri.

Beyond his hard work ethic, Mikey loved going to Kellogg Lake in Carthage and hanging out with friends and fishing! Other hobbies include drawing, collecting comic books, joke telling and playing pool. He loved visiting with his loved ones. Mikey’s heart was full of love, and he was a friend to all who knew him.

He is survived by his brother and lifelong best friend; Wayne Clemmer (Le Ann) of the home in Carthage, 4 sisters; Delta Birdsong, Cheryl Moore, Dorothy Wiseman, and Goldie Hutson; and many extended family and friends. He was also preceded in death by his sisters; Dalene Buffington, Ruth Jean Newton, Gaylyn Alsup, Rosebud Clemmer, and Peggy Clemmer, and 2 brothers; Joe Mullen and James “Jimmy” Mullen.

There will be a celebration of this wonderful life in the springtime of 2025.

Linda Gardner

Linda Sue (Timmons) Gardner, 71, of Lamar, Missouri, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2024.

Born on December 19, 1953, in Springfield, Illinois, Linda was the daughter of Wayne F. Timmons and Eileen Helen (Dwyer) Timmons. She pursued her passion for learning and teaching, earning her master’s degree in education from Missouri Southern State University.

On September 25, 1976, Linda married Harold Dennis Gardner in Hillsboro, Illinois. Together, they shared a life filled with love, dedication, and family.

Linda spent her career as an educator with Jasper R-5 schools, shaping young minds with care and commitment until her retirement in 2005. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, a loving mother, a doting granny, and a steadfast friend.

She is survived by her children, Rio (Kelsi) Gardner of Pittsburg, Kansas, and Rebekah (Brandon) Weis of Lamar, Missouri; her treasured grandson, Harold Lee Gardner; and her brother, Andy (Mary Jo) Timmons of Benton, Illinois.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dennis, whose love she carried with her always.

In accordance with Linda’s wishes, a private family burial will be held at a later date.

Jaime Cota

Jaime Alonso Cota, Jr., age 28, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2025 at his home.

He was born June 18, 1996 in San Diego, California the son of Romaldo Hernandez Martinez and Maria Magdalena (Mendoza) Cota, who survive. Also surviving are his girlfriend, Elvia Mejia of Mt. Vernon, Missouri; daughters, Isabella Cota of Cassville, Missouri and Ariella Cota of Cassville, Missouri; son, Noah Wright of Cassville, Missouri; brother, Jacob; sisters, Michelle, Ashley and Joanna; close friends, Miguel Wences, Orlando Garcia, and Cheyenne Wright of Cassville, Missouri and Ty Miller of Cassville, Missouri.

Preceding him in death was his brother, Juan Ruiz.

Jaime was employed by Schreiber Foods in Mt. Vernon, Missouri as a production worker. Aside from working at Schreiber's, Jaime was well respected in the construction industry. He was always first to lend a helping hand to friends, family, and strangers. Jaime was known for being very hardworking his entire life and taking care of his family. He enjoyed working out, video games and reading, but most of all he loved spending time with his children.

Visitation will be from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. Monday, January 13, 2025 at Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville, Missouri.

Gary Phillips

Owen "Gary" Phillips, age 83, passed away Monday, December 30, 2024 at his home in Oswego, Kansas.

Gary was born January 29, 1941 to the late Jack and Mildred (Hulen) Phillips in rural Columbus, Kansas at the family home. Throughout his life, he worked several jobs including BF Goodrich for over 20 years, maintenance for Class, and also for the Labette County Appraiser's Office. He was rightfully proud of the time he spent serving our country in the Army during Vietnam. 

Gary married Sharolyn Jane Graham on October 1, 1959 in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives of the home. Gary and Sharolyn enjoyed traveling all over the world together to places like Ukraine, Russia, China, Croatia, and Venice, just to name a few. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, and was also a gun enthusiast.

In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by two brothers: Jack Phillips Jr., and Emmett Phillips; and two sisters: Freda Newcomb, and Nancy Martin.

He his survived by his wife Sharolyn, one son: Gary Andrew Phillips (wife Debbie) of Webb City, MO; three daughters: Molly Wright of Independence, KS, Lori Holt (husband Gregg) of Columbus, KS, Cindy Dill (husband Mark) of Independence, KS; eight grandchildren: Diane Shelly (husband Jonny), David Phillips (wife Rachel), Sarah Phillips (wife Faith), Gary Holt (wife Amanda), Amanda Holt (wife Shelby), Matthew Wright, Andrew Dill, and Berea Dill; and nine great-grandchildren: Joel Shelly, Paige Shelly, Gentry Holt, Eleanor Holt, Oakley Wright, Asher Wright, Savannah Phillips, and Lucas Phillips.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home of Oswego, KS. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 7, 2025 from 1:00 PM-2:00 PM at Derfelt Funeral Home in Oswego. Delores Porter

Delores Marie (Antholz) Porter, 93, of Springfield, MO passed away peacefully at her home on December 29, 2024. She was born on June 21,1931 in Elk Creek, NE to Alvin and Leona (Edie) Antholz. 

Delores married Walter R. Porter on September 18, 1948 and three daughters were born to this union: Kittie Porter of Whittier, CA; Kathleen Cooper (husband Don) of Cabool, MO; and Kristi Alcazar (husband Jesus) of Long Beach, CA. Delores was blessed with six grandchildren: David Porter (Shannon) of Lakewood, CA, Shiloh Cooper (Chris Nelson) of Joplin, MO, Shasta McClenahan (Justin) of Silver Spring, MD, Sarah Honeycutt (Drew) of Cabool, MO, Alicia Alcazar-Romero (David) of Long Beach, CA, and Rachel Gilpatrick (Daniel) of Long Beach, CA; along with 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. 

Delores was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Walt; two of her daughters, Kittie and Kristi; her brother Robert Dean; two sisters, Darlene “Mike” and Mary Ann; and two infant brothers.

Delores spent her childhood in Pawnee City, NE before moving to Long Beach, CA in the early 1950s with Walt. In California, Delores ran a home daycare and became an avid crocheter and quilter, often making beautiful creations that she sold at craft fairs or shared with family and friends. 

After retirement, Walt and Delores moved back to the Midwest to a farm in Hoyt, KS in 1989 where she was a proud member of the Meriden United Methodist Church of Meriden, KS. The 28 acre farm kept them busy and was a family paradise to visit. Mornings came with a country western music wake up call and in the evening, everyone gathered together for card games around the kitchen table. A few years after Walt’s passing in 2006, Delores moved to Springfield, MO to be closer to family and happily became a member of The Fremont and then Turner’s Rock senior communities where she made countless friends. 

She was not to be underestimated and could always be counted on to take charge whether it was helping at her church, cooking and baking, being a master cake cutter for events, or caring for her family and friends. If you were lucky, she might have cupped your face in her hands, giving a series of hearty pats on one cheek–her unique way of showing affection. To receive this gesture meant you were loved. Her commanding presence and one-of-a-kind personality will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Delores will be laid to rest next to her loving spouse Walt in Pawnee City, NE in a private family ceremony.

Bill Gannaway

With both sadness and gratitude for a life well lived, we announce that William "Bill" Daniel Gannaway entered eternal rest on December 31, 2024 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. A man of unwavering faith, deep love, and dedicated service, Bill's 60 years were marked by devotion to his family, church, and community.

Born on May 1, 1964, in Parsons, Kansas, to Earl H. Gannaway and Sherry (Stiver) Allen, Bill was raised in a loving family alongside his seven siblings. Bill graduated from Erie High School in 1982 and earned his undergraduate degree at the College of the Ozarks, where he played baseball. He later obtained his radiologic technology degree from Labette Community College and completed his nuclear medicine training at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.

On October 3, 1992, Bill married the love of his life, Michelle (Schnackenberg). Together, they created a home built on unwavering love and steadfast commitment, which served as the foundation of their family. Bill was a proud and devoted father to Gabrielle and Gavin. His love for his family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished each of them as his greatest earthly blessings.

Professionally, Bill made a meaningful impact as a nuclear medicine technologist at Freeman Health System, where he worked for over 24 years. He took great pride in his work and was deeply respected by his colleagues for his knowledge, skill, and commitment to helping others.

As a devout Catholic, Bill lived by the principles of kindness, integrity, and selflessness. He was always willing to put others before himself, offering help, guidance, and encouragement whenever it was needed. His faith guided him through life's challenges and was a source of strength and inspiration for all who knew him. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Webb City, Missouri, where he served as an usher, was on the Parish Council, and participated in the Knights of Columbus.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Bill dedicated over 30 years to the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) and Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA), officiating football, baseball, and basketball. He was a member of the Joplin Football Officials Association for 35 years, serving on the Executive Board multiple times, including as President. Bill officiated at the collegiate level in Kansas and Missouri, including the MIAA for football and baseball, and most recently as a football line judge for the Mountain West Conference. Bill had the honor of officiating several minor league baseball games for the Springfield Cardinals and Arkansas Naturals. In addition, he held memberships with the Joplin Umpire Association, The Joplin Basketball Officials Association, the KJCCC, NAIA, CBUA and Region 16. His passion for sports extended far beyond the field or court, and his whistle and warm smile were familiar sights at countless games.

Though we mourn his early absence, we rejoice in knowing that Bill is now at peace in the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ. His life reminds us of the promise in 2 Timothy 4:7 – "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

He is preceded in death by his Father, Earl H. Gannaway, and his wife, Sandra Gannaway, Kenny Allen, and maternal and paternal grandparents. He is survived by his mother, Sherry Allen, wife Michelle; his daughter, Gabbie; his son, Gavin; and siblings: Virginia (Frank) Garcia, Stacy (Phil) Cook, Debbie (Brian) Atnip, Rebecca Friedrichs, Susie Ledbetter, Ben (Jaime) Gannaway, Natalie (Mike) Wolff, a host of nieces and nephews and his beloved dogs Elliot and Gracie Lou.

A Visitation will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Webb City, Missouri. This will be followed by a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Joplin, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to support the family with unexpected medical and funeral expenses in Bill's honor, in care of the funeral home.

Rest in peace, William "Bill" Daniel Gannaway. Your legacy of love, faith, and service will forever remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know you. We look forward to the day we are reunited in God's heavenly kingdom.

Charlotte Sargent

Charlotte Marie Sargent, known affectionately as "Nana" and "Gigi" by her grandchildren, passed into eternal life January 2, 2025. Born in Carthage, MO, USA on August 23, 1957, and a lifelong resident of Purcell, Missouri, Charlotte brought a distinct lightness and humor to the world with her funny and witty personality. She was a beacon of love, kindness, and humility, and her devotion to her family and Jesus was unparalleled.

Charlotte was not just a good wife and mother; she was exceptional. Married to her beloved Tony since September 12, 1975, her love story was one that transcended time and trials, proving the truth in the saying, "Love is not about how many days, months, or years you have been together. Love is about how much you love each other every single day.". Throughout life she found joy in spending time with her grandkids, walking, being outdoors, fishing, and attending church. Each of these hobbies reflected her love for the simple yet profound pleasures of life.

Charlotte’s life was a testament to the words of Maya Angelou, who once said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Charlotte made each person she met feel seen, valued, and loved. Her radiant smile and infectious laughter will forever remain in our hearts.

Charlotte is survived by her loyal and devoted husband, Tony Sargent; daughters, Ann (Rob) Gust and Teresa (Will) Tyler; a son, Anthony (Chrissie) Sargent; sister-in-law, Tina Mathis; brothers, Rick (Sara) Mathis and Rocky Mathis; sisters, Sharon Bastings, Beth (Tom) Pendergraft, Donna Mathis and Johnna Smith; grandchildren, Camara (Chayse) Jones, Wyatt (Zani) Sargent, Robbie Gust, Zack (Macy) Carey, Natalie Gust, Rylie Gust, Kylee Sargent, Abby Sargent, Madison Gust, Brecklynn Sargent, Oakland Sargent and Lane Sargent; great-grandchildren, Emerson Jones, Hudson Carey, Bristol Jones, Zion Sargent, Finn Carey, Madden Jones and baby boy Sargent on the way. 

She has now joined her parents, John and Vera Mathis, in peaceful rest; brother, Dennis Mathis.

Charles Hensley

Charles “Dennis” Hensley Jr. 27, of Arma, Kansas died Wednesday, January 1, 2025 at Mercy Hospital at Joplin, Missouri.

Mr. Hensley was born January 16, 1997 at Pittsburg, Kansas the son of Charles Dennis and Roselina Coulter Hensley Sr. Dennis worked in production at Diamond Pet Food in Frontenac. He lived in Arma most of his life. He was raised in Arma and graduated from Northeast High School in the Class of 2015. He later attended Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. He loved sports, fishing, and playing cards.

Survivors include his parents, Dennis and Roselina Hensley of Arma, a sister, Lina (Jonathan) Coulter and niece, Kaydence of Olathe, Kansas, and maternal grandparents, Randy and Brenda Coulter of Pittsburg, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ivan and Jeanette Hensley.

Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at the Bedene Funeral Home in Arma, Kansas with Rev. Daryl Gaddy officiating. Burial will be at the Pittsburg Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. Tuesday at the Bedene Funeral Home prior to the funeral service. The family suggests memorials to the Northeast High School Athletics Program. Linda Martin

Linda Susan Martin (Reeves), 79, of Decatur died Jan. 1, 2025. Linda was born June 11, 1945, to W.M. Reeves and Dorothy Switzer Reeves.

She graduated from Noel High School and attended Crowder College before marrying her husband, Normen, for what would become 48 loving years in 1971. Linda worked as a water clerk for the city of Decatur and was also a long-serving member of the city council. She attended Gravette Church of Christ and previously worshipped at Gravette Christian Church and Decatur United Methodist Church.

Linda enjoyed many hobbies, particularly quilting later in life. She will be most remembered for her civic and volunteer work. From school functions to every church activity imaginable, United Way campaigns, community dinners and the Decatur barbecue, there were few local events over the decades that did not benefit from Linda's organization, enthusiasm and willingness to take on difficult tasks.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Dorothy "Dot" Roeckel and Patsy "Pat" Barnes; a brother, Jack Reeves; and a niece, Candy Barnes.

She is survived by her son, John of Decatur; nieces, Patty Gage (Fred) and Judy Risse (John) of Atchison, Kan; niece, Linda Francis of Winterset, Iowa; nephew, Keith Barnes (Gayle) of Gassville; and nephew, Scott Reeves (Jamie) of Springfield, Mo.

Linda was tired of funerals and did not want a memorial service. She will be buried in a family ceremony at Decatur Cemetery.

Travis Morris

Travis Dean Morris, 30 of Carl Junction, passed away on December 28, 2024, in Nebraska. He was born on June 9, 1994, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Ronnie Morris and Sherry Baldwin.

Travis was a devoted husband to his wife, Amanda (McNally) Morris, and an extraordinary father to his cherished daughter, Hadlee Morris. His love for his family was unparalleled, and he often said that Amanda and Hadlee were his absolute pride and joy. Travis's commitment to his family was evident in every aspect of his life, and he worked tirelessly to provide for them.

In addition to his wife, Amanda, and daughter, Hadlee, Travis is survived by his siblings, Amber Morris, Sean Moran, and Justine Moran; his loving grandparents, Agnes and Dick Morris; and his nieces and nephews, Tailyn, Louella, Zylin, Zethan, Kylin, and Everson. Each family member held a special place in his heart, and he cherished the moments he spent with them.

Travis was a respected entrepreneur, having been the owner and operator of a successful trucking company. Beyond his professional achievements, Travis was a man of many interests. He had a passion for working out, always striving to be the best version of himself. He also loved the time spent with family and friends. However, his greatest joy was playing with his daughter, Hadlee.

Travis's character was defined by his kindness and his willingness to help others. He was the best friend anyone could ask for, always there to lend a hand or an ear. His ability to motivate and encourage others to reach their full potential was one of his most admirable qualities. Travis lived his life with an open heart, and his legacy of love and service will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Florence Cable

Florence M. Cable, age 75 of Joplin, Missouri, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2024 at her home following an extended illness. Florence was born February 10, 1949 in New Roads, Louisiana to the late Frank and Margaret (Flynn) Manola.

Florence was raised in the Catholic faith, attending St. Mary’s Elementary, McAuley Middle School and then graduated from Joplin High. She worked for the Joplin School District as an Attendance Secretary prior to retirement. For the last 20 plus years, Florence was a homemaker, taking care of her husband and family. The past few years, Florence has been attending The Well Church in Carl Junction, Missouri.

Florence was a loving wife to Hugh Cable, married on December 15, 1967 in Joplin. Together, they have two sons, Brian Cable (Sherry) of Carl Junction and Jason Cable of Joplin. She was a doting grandmother to Tay, Ty, Wyatt and Gracie May Cable.

Other than her parents, Florence was preceded in death by an infant brother.

Visitation will be at the mortuary on Friday, January 3, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 Noon in the Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Rick Flinn officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Park Cemetery in Joplin.

Shawn Berryman

Shawn Steven Berryman, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on December 27th, 2024, in Sullivan, Mo. Born on February 22nd, 1977, in Jacksonville, FLorida. Shawn lived a life that was as vibrant and full of love as his larger- than- life personality.

Shawn is survived by his devoted wife, Tara, their 5 cherished children: Corbin, Gage. Kaden, Madyson, and Xander. He took pride in being a father, and every moment was filled with laughter and joy. His legacy will continue through them as they carry the values he instilled- kindness towards others and an unwavering sense of humor.

In addition to Tara and their children; Shawn leaves behind loving parents, Steve and Jill Berryman, along with his brothers Andrew (Lori), Brian (Ping), and Curtis (Cassie), who were not just siblings, but lifelong companions thru thick-and-thin moments shared together over the years. The bond they forged remains unbreakable even now as they navigate this profound loss.

He was a proud Navy veteran who, during his time, served honorably. Shawn's commitment to service extended beyond military duty into every aspect of his life. He had had an innate ability to connect with people from all walks of life - a trait that endeared him not only to his family but also to friends within the motorcycle community he loved dearly. Riding along fellow enthusiasts brought him great happiness: it was more than just a hobby - it was a part of who he was.

Known for his dad jokes that could both elicit groans and laughter alike, his humor became legendary among those fortunate enough to know him well. Whether sharing stories around the dinner table, cracking jokes during family gatherings at home, or riding across state lines, Shawn was definitely one of a kind.

He became full of pride when welcoming Amiyah and Bentley as his grandchildren into his world-and anticipation grew for another one that would soon be joining their ranks! Shawn also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, a mother-in-law who loved him as a son. And many other family members. Shawn embodied what it meant to be their for family no matter how big or small. While words fall short in capturing everything about Shawn, we find solace in knowing that the memories created will forever live on within our hearts.

A memorial honoring Shawn's remarkable life will be held at a later date where family and friends can gather together celebrating his life- from heart-felt stories to joyous recollections shared amongst one another, we will remember how much light he brought into our lives.

Michelle Gass

Michelle Dawn (Wilkinson) Gass, age 57 of South Greenfield, MO, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025 in her home surrounded by her loved ones and beloved dog, Tippy-girl.

Michelle was born on September 10, 1967 in Barton County, MO, daughter of Jerry and Thelma (Simmons) Wilkinson. She enjoyed numerous years of Social Work at the Dade County Nursing Home, home health nurse, and other medical related positions throughout her working career. During this time Michelle made an impact on many people’s lives. She loved helping people and establishing a connection with her patients and their families that went above and beyond the job.

She is preceded in death by her parents; maternal grandparents, Granny Bill (Lillian) and Virgil Thomas Simmons; paternal grandparents, Grandma Inez and George Wilkinson; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Michelle is survived by daughter, Mandi Seela and her husband Ryan; son, Fulton Gass; son, Timothy Gass and his wife Amber; two granddaughters, Briley and Baylea Seela; two sisters, Candi Alexander and husband Mike, and Leah Loonsfoot and husband Travis; lifelong best friend, Sis Tracy Feasel; two nieces, Lillian and Ellee Loonsfoot; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Greenfield Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral chapel. Private family inurnment will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Danny Haskins

Daniel Curtis Haskins was born May 4, 1952 to Hervel E Haskins and Ina Faye Haskins. He passed away Sunday, December 15, 2024. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and the eldest sibling Gary Wayne Haskins. He is survived by his son, Steven Curtis Meinhardt, as well as sisters Beverly Joyce Vote (David), Cynthia Lou Haskins, and brother Jeffrey Scott Haskins and a host of cousins, nephews and nieces and their children.

In his youth, Danny enjoyed creating art and working on cars, but his greatest joy came in hunting and fishing.

Helen Nowlin

Helen Nowlin, 84, went to meet her Heavenly Father on December 31, 2024. She had resided at the Oak Pointe Assisted Living facility for the last two years upon leaving her home of many years in Tabor Woods. 

Helen was born in Carl Junction on June 3, 1940 to Lucille (Tarrant) Devers. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Gary Nowlin, her son Brian Nowlin, her daughterin- law Joy Nowlin, her twin sister Hazel Wescott and husband Joe Wescott and her brother Gene Tarrant.

Helen is survived by one son; Kent Nowlin and his wife Brooke Nowlin of Leavenworth, Kansas, and one daughter Tara Thomas and her husband Mike Thomas of Carthage, Missouri. Her grandchildren; Jonah Nowlin and his wife Adriana Nowlin of Leavenworth, Kansas, Josiah Nowlin, Joel Nowlin and his wife Rachel Nowlin of Lakewood, Washington, Jadon Nowlin, Jaala Nowlin, Japheth Nowlin, Judah Nowlin, Ethan Thomas and his wife Addie Thomas of Carthage, Missouri, Karly Miller and her husband Jacob Miller of Columbia, Missouri and Macy Thomas, also; one sister Marlene Wheeler and her husband Kenny Wheeler of Pleasant Hill, Missouri and a brother Pat Tarrant and his wife Mary Tarrant of Dallas, Georgia.

Helen loved God and her family more than anything in the world. If you knew her you experienced her servant heart! She attended Carl Junction Christian Church her entire life and loved her church and church family. Even when she experienced difficulty producing a complete sentence she was able to sing the hymns from her heart.

Timothy Selves

Timothy R. Selves, 74, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri. Timothy was born on August 18, 1950, in Monett. He was a lifetime resident of the Joplin area. 

Timothy received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Missouri Southern State University, and his associate’s degree in theology at the Nazarene Bible College. He worked for the City of Joplin for 15 years before he retired.

He spent 10 years in the army with the 101st Airborne, serving in Vietnam during that  time. He loved riding his Harley, playing his guitar, and managed a booth at the Joplin Flea Market for many years. He was musically talented, and people knew him as the Music Man.

He was united in marriage to Rose Ewing-Lowe on February 23, 2008; she survives.

He is survived by two sons, Daniel Selves of Houston, Texas, and Aaron Selves of Billings, Montana; three daughters, Rebekah Selves of Joplin, Ashlee Beck of Joplin, and Casandra Bailey of Carl Junction; one stepson, Ryan Lowe of Carl Junction; one stepdaughter, Debra Cartwright of Maui, Hawaii; one sister, Anita Miller of Webb City; and 17 grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service for Timothy at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 10, 2024, at Ulmer Funeral Home in Carthage, Missouri.

David Forste

David E Forste, 81, of Carthage, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at Carthage Health and Rehab. David was born on July 17, 1943, in Carthage, Missouri, to Harold and Sarah Forste. He was born and raised in Carthage. He sold real estate and retired from Schrieber Foods after 24 years. He liked to golf, deer hunting and an avid dart player.

He was joined in marriage to Peggy Siem in 1963 in Pomona, California; she survives.

Along with his wife Peggy, he was survived by three sons, John Forste of Carthage, Jeremy Forste of Joplin, and Jason Forste (Shay) of Gallatin, Tennessee; one daughter, Debbie Sanderson (Les) of Carthage; one daughter in law, Mary Forste of Argyle, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jeff Forste (July 2021); and one brother, Max Harold Forste.

Bobby Hines

Bobby Hines, age 84 of Milo, Missouri passed away December 31st at Medicalodge Nursing Home in Nevada. He was born October 5, 1940 in Martin, South Dakota to George and Francis (Barto) Hines. During his childhood, the family lived in Southern California, Nebraska and Brentwood, AR, before settling in Lamar, Missouri.

Bob was united in marriage to Loretta J. Fite on October 14, 1960 at the Assembly of God Church in Lamar, Missouri. Following their marriage, Bob and Loretta lived in Lamar and Stockton before relocating to Milo in 1972. 

Bob and Loretta had two children, Ronnette and Kevin. Bob worked for Lawn Boy and O’Sullivan in Lamar and he helped construct the Stockton Dam. After moving to Milo, he worked as a custodian at Bryan School and later at the Fram plant in Nevada prior to his retirement.

As a young man, Bob was very athletic and a local baseball pitching talent. He also played golf and tennis. Bob enjoyed fishing, repairing small engines and having coffee with friends. He also enjoyed cracking and selling pecans each fall that were grown on Kevin and Ronnette’s farm.

Survivors include, a daughter, Ronnette (Joe) Wilson of Nevada, son Kevin Hines of Nevada and four grandchildren, Jessica (David) Sleezer of Olathe, Ks, Joshua Wilson of Kansas City, KS, Nathan Hines of Nevada, MO and Karla Hines of Nevada MO, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta, his parents, and his four brothers, Loy, Boyd, Maurice and Monty Hines.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday January 7, 2024 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Dennis Engelbrecht officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 on Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Milo Cemetery.

Larry Vancuren

Larry Marlin Vancuren, 78, of Southwest City, Missouri, passed peacefully on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at Willard Walker Hospice Home in Fayetteville, Arkansas, due to complications from a stroke in July. His loving wife, Jamie, never left his side.

Larry was born in Harrison, Arkansas, on October 24, 1946, the eldest child of Oliver and Lois (Clark) Vancuren. The family lived in Ponca, Harp Creek, and Dogpatch, Arkansas, until 1957, when they moved to Harrison, where Larry graduated high school in 1963. 

After graduation, Larry moved in with his uncle and aunt, J.E. and Billie Clark, to attend college at The University of Arkansas. While going to church with his aunt and uncle, Larry got to know a local Springdale girl, named Jamie. The rest, as they say, is history. Larry married James Anna (Jamie) Armes on May 27, 1967, in Springdale, Arkansas.

In June of 1967, Larry graduated college with a degree in education. He taught school and coached in Southwest City, Missouri for three years, then taught in Russellville, Arkansas for two years, before returning to Southwest City for a career change into banking. Larry dedicated 50 years to the customers and staff at The Cornerstone Bank, building not only business relationships, but friendships that would span multiple generations. 

His peaceful nature and love for the local community led to involvement in many endeavors over the years. He was an active and faithful member of First Baptist Church, in Southwest City, serving as a deacon and sound booth operator, among other roles. Larry was an avid supporter of Crowder College, serving on the Board of Trustees for the past ten years, and participating in scholarship events hosted by the Crowder College Foundation. Every year, he could be found at the premium sales of the McDonald, Benton, Washington, and Delaware County Fairs, supporting local youth and their families. He brought in musical groups and shared his love of southern gospel music each summer at the Southwest City July 3rd Celebration. 

Larry’s greatest joys included spending time with family and friends: on the farm riding the tractor or the four wheeler, going to dinner, calling the Hogs, attending singings, and just sharing good conversation and laughs.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Lois Vancuren, and his son, Cameron Hall Vancuren.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jamie Vancuren, one son Kevin Vancuren and wife Christen of Gentry, Arkansas, one daughter Ashley Morrison and husband Gary of Neosho, Missouri, grandchildren: Luke Vancuren and wife Jenna, Ross Wilmoth, Gabe Vancuren, and Abri Vancuren, and one great granddaughter Oakley Vancuren. In addition to many other family members, Larry’s siblings also survive: Helen Fish and husband Mike, Jenny Stinchcomb, Bill Vancuren, Arlin Vancuren and wife Kathy, and Randy Vancuren and wife Kellie.

Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2025 at First Baptist Church in Southwest City, Missouri, with Bro. Rob Grimm officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery in Springdale, Arkansas. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Luke Vancuren, Gabe Vancuren, Ross Wilmoth, IV, Kip Lindquist, Conner Wolff and Devon Goddard. The family will receive friends from 4-7:00 p.m. on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made to the First Baptist Church of Southwest City or to the Crowder College Foundation c/o the funeral home. Bonita Bond

Bonita Kay Bond, age 58, of Webb City, MO, passed away December 29, 2024.

Bonita was born on January 7, 1966 at San Jorge Hospital in Santurce, Puerto Rico where her parents served on the mission field. Bonita attended elementary school in Eldon, Missouri and later graduated from John F. Hodge High School in St. James, Missouri. She completed her Associate’s degree from Central Christian College of the Bible in Moberly, Missouri and her Bachelors in Education from the University of Missouri in Columbia. Her Master of Science Curriculum and Instruction was awarded by The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.

Bonita invested 28 years as a public school educator throughout Missouri in the communities of Columbia, Mexico and Carthage. Her professional life exemplified by a favorite “teacher” quote by Forest Witcraft, “A hundred years from now it won’t matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank, nor what my clothes looked like, but the world may be a better place because I was important in the life of a child.”









The most important relationship in Bonita’s life, her walk with Christ, was cultivated in her home by her parents Raymond and Therma Bond. Her personal commitment to Him began with her baptism at the age of 9 in Arvada, Colorado. Her gratitude for this relationship was exemplified throughout her life as she invested her talents including music, the teaching of children, handcrafted gifts, and joyfully encouraging others.

Remaining to cherish Bonita’s memory are her immediate family including her son, Brandon (Kayla) Bond of Joplin; her mother, Therma Bond of Webb City; her brothers Gordon (Nancy) Bond of Conway, AR and Mark (Rachel) Bond of Quincy, IL. She is also remembered by her beloved extended family, church family, dear friends and former students.

Bonita was preceded in death by her father, Raymond L. Bond.

A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor in the Spring of 2025. More specific information will be posted here as plans are finalized.

Richard Woodward

Richard Woodward, 92, of Bronson, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024.

Richard Kenneth Woodward was born on June 2, 1932, to Benjamin Franklin Woodward and Susie (Koehn) Woodward in Moundridge, Kansas. His family moved to Bronson, Kansas in 1945, where he graduated from Bronson High School in 1951. Richard was a three sport athlete while in high school. He served a two-year tour of duty in the United States Army from 1955-1957. 

On September 22, 1957 Richard married Barbara Ermel in the Xenia Baptist Church. Richard was a farmer and rancher in the Bronson area with his brother, Vernon, and son, Kevin. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #245 for 70 years, a charter member of the Bronson Ruritan Club and a member of the American Legion Post #385.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Susie Woodward; three brothers, Myron, Vernon and Glenn Woodward; and two sisters, Marjorie Ensminger and Lorene Hoobler.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Barbara; one son, Kevin Woodward and wife, Sherri, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; three daughters, Karen Woodward of Leavenworth, Kansas; Lisa Oehrle of Olathe, Kansas; and Lora Niles and husband, Ray of Carl Junction, Missouri; four grandchildren, Captain (Dr.) Brett Niles and wife, Zaina, Osan Air Base in South Korea; Katie and Kellie Woodward of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and Kyle Oehrle of Andover, Kansas; one brother, Luther Woodward and wife, Hazel of Burke, Virginia; one sister-in-law Cheryl Stewart and husband, Ivy of Cypress, Texas; and one brother-in-law, Fred Ermel of Moran, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.

Barbara Woodward

Barbara Woodward, 91, of Bronson, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2024.

Barbara Louise Ermel was born on August, 24, 1933, to Ernest and Irene (Howerton) Ermel in Fort Scott, Kansas. She graduated from Blue Mound High School in 1951. After high school, she attended Fort Scott Junior College and worked at the Western Insurance Company. 

On September 22, 1957, she married Richard Woodward in the Xenia Baptist Church. In the early years as a mother, she stayed home with their four children. Later, she worked for Worthington Oil Company, Farmers Coop/Farmland Industries, ASCS Office and Beachner Grain. She was a member of Xenia Baptist Church, served on the Bronson Public Library Board, Southeast Kansas Health Department Board and was a Bronson Ruritan Club member. She was very active in the Bronson area recycling program and other community activities. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was known for her homemade pies.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Irene Ermel; her husband, Richard on December 22, 2024; and one sister, Carlene Rubicam.

She is survived by one son, Kevin Woodward and wife, Sherri, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; three daughters, Karen Woodward of Leavenworth, Kansas; Lisa Oehrle of Olathe, Kansas; and Lora Niles and husband, Ray of Carl Junction, Missouri; four grandchildren, Ca ptain (Dr.) Brett Niles and wife, Zaina, Osan Air Base in South Korea; Katie and Kellie Woodward of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and Kyle Oehrle of Andover, Kansas; one sister, Cheryl Stewart and husband, Ivy of Cypress, Texas; one brother, Fred Ermel of Moran, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert Creech

Robert Eugene Creech, 96, of Blackwell, OK, died on Saturday, December 28, 2024. Robert was born on Thursday, February 9, 1928, in Rogers, Arkansas, to Lennis Eugene and Lura Mable (Todd) Creech. After graduating high school, Robert joined the US Army. He married Sue Ann (Fish) on June 10, 1949in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He retired from Conoco in 1983, as a chemical analyst.

Robert loved growing a garden, which consistently had an abundance of yellow squash, zucchini, and many, many tomatoes. He enjoyed going to garage sales and loved to fish. Robert had a passion for collecting cameras. Robert was a member of the First Christian Church, and Rock Hounds (Oklahoma Mineral and Gem Society).

Robert is survived by: daughter, Nicki Drager of Ponca City, OK; son, Mike Creech and his wife, Mary, of Blackwell, OK; daughter, Robin Creech-Smith and her husband, Ron, of Ponca City, OK; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Sue Riley of Carl Junction, MO; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Sue Ann; son, Harry Creech; parents, Lennis and Mable; and sister, Yvonne Edwards.
