Ralph Schmidt

(From Buchanan Funeral Home)

Ralph Albert Schmidt, 80, was called into eternal rest on Friday, January 30, 2026, at his home in Monett, Missouri.

Ralph was born on August 5, 1945, in Verona, Missouri, to Albert and Flora (Pfitzner) Schmidt. He graduated from Monett High School in 1963. On November 18, 1972, he married Frances “Jeannie” Bertalotto, and together they shared more than 53 years of marriage.

Ralph proudly served six years in the National Guard and was honorably discharged. He spent many years working in road construction as an operating engineer before retiring, a career that reflected his deep sense of responsibility and workmanship. Known for his strong work ethic and long days, Ralph was often up before 4 a.m. to head to work, only to return home and continue working well into the late evenings and early mornings on the family farm. He was deeply connected to the roads he helped build and never missed an opportunity to point them out while driving, sharing stories of the work he had done and offering his own critiques along the way. A perfectionist at heart, Ralph held himself and his work to the highest standard. He was a longtime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 101.

An avid farmer with a big heart, Ralph devoted decades to caring for the family farm, seeing it not just as work but as a way of life. The same dedication he brought to his career showed up at home, in the land he tended and the people he helped. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a respected man within his family, among his friends, in his community, and alongside those he worked with. Known by all as a one-of-a-kind man, Ralph was recognized for his firm handshake, quick wit, and love for farming, laughter, and colorful conversation. He was truly a legend.

Ralph is survived by his beloved wife, Jeannie; his three children, Stacy (Stephen) Bishop of Shell Knob, Missouri, Patrick (Amber Ferguson) Schmidt of Monett, Missouri, and Stephanie (Jason) Gunter of Olathe, Kansas; and his six grandchildren, Allyson “Carter,” Camryn, and Adalyne “Cooper” Schmidt, and Emerson, Ophelia, and Bronson Bishop.

He is also survived by his brother, Leo (Janice) Schmidt; his sister, Marguerite (Bill) Butterworth; his sister-in-law, Joyce Tinklepaugh, all of Monett; along with numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Andrew, Joseph, and Carl Schmidt; and his sister, Mary Ann Jirik.

John Bruce Lankford, 85 years old, passed away January 31, 2026, at his home in Seneca, Missouri, leaving behind a family who loved him deeply and a lifetime of fond memories. Although his physical heart grew weak, it was his kind and compassionate heart that defined him-one that felt genuine empathy for anyone in need. As he grew older, he never failed to tell his family how much he loved them, a simple but meaningful gift they will carry with them always.

John is survived by his partner of 23 years, Robin Brennan, and her daughter, Skyler Spence; his children Tammy Miller, Todd Lankford, and Shad Lankford and his wife, Heather; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and his brother, Joe Lankford. John Bruce was a hard-working man who built his life through dedication, perseverance, and service to others. In 1966, he purchased a full-service gas station in Neosho, Missouri, where he became well known throughout the community. A few years later, he started a wrecker service and salvage yard near his home outside of Seneca, Missouri, eventually working out of a garage at the salvage yard. Known by most people in the area, John earned a reputation as someone who would always do what he could to help others.

Whether it was lending a hand, fixing a problem, or helping someone get back on the road, John was dependable and generous with his time. His strong work ethic, compassion, and willingness to help left a lasting impression on many. In addition to his work and service to individuals, John served on the Thompson Grove Cemetery Board for many years, a role that reflected his deep respect for community, history, and those who came before him.

He will be remembered as a man who worked hard, cared deeply for his community, and never hesitated to help someone in need.

John was truly one of a kind-a colorful character and entertaining storyteller who lived by his motto, "You're tougher than boot leather," right up to the end.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Hottel Springs Church of Christ, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the service at 11:00 a.m.
