Gerald worked for many years as Maintenance Supervisor at Steadley Manufacturing until the company sold in 1997. Prior to that, he worked at Country Pride Turkey Plant, where he earned the nickname “Yogi."

In retirement, he continued serving others as a taxi driver for the City of Carthage until fully retiring in 2017. More than any title or occupation, Gerald will be remembered for the life he lived and the people he loved. He was a coach, a father, a big brother, a deacon, a Papa, and a faithful friend. He was the kind of man people ran to in hard times, because he brought peace, wisdom, and steady strength with a little humor mixed in. His name became known for honesty, integrity, generosity, and hard work. Gerald loved the Lord with all his heart and treasured the Good Book, whose pages guided his life and anchored his faith. Through trials and blessings alike, he remained steadfast, trusting God every step of the way.

He shared a beautiful love story with his wife, Joyce, of fifty years. Gerald was a devoted father to his three sons and their wives, and a proud Papa to eighteen grandchildren. He was also blessed with three great-grandchildren (with two more on the way.) Being Papa was one of his greatest joys. He always made time for each child, whether it was finding baby turtles, starting maple trees, looking through “mo-car” magazines, and simply making ordinary moments unforgettable.

He loved us all for a lifetime long, and he leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, strength, and family that will continue for generations.

He fought the good fight,
He finished the race,
He kept the faith.

Jane Ghan

(From Clark Funeral Home)

July 10, 1930 - April 19, 2026

Jane LaVerne (Caruthers) Ghan was a strong-willed woman, as those who knew her well can testify. Maybe it was because she knew what she wanted and wouldn't see it any other way; maybe it was because she wouldn't take nonsense from anyone; but most likely it was because her husband of 60 years spoiled her and provided for her so she never lacked anything, creating a strong will to see her through her life.

She will forever be remembered for her amazing cooking, often on a large-scale to accommodate the many people that would show up at her house for a meal. Her recipes for home made pie crusts and dinner "egg" rolls live on through her family.

Jane, known as Mimi to everyone in her later years, was born to Floyd Clayton Caruthers and LouElla Marie (Goodall) Caruthers in Saffordville, KS on July 10, 1930. She had four older siblings (listed in birth order): Virginia (Caruthers) Elgin, Richard Ernest Caruthers, Jean (Caruthers) Nurnberg, and Marjorie (Caruthers) Short, all of whom have passed before her. Mimi graduated high school from Purdy, MO, and shortly after eloped with Willard Dale Ghan on October 2, 1948 in Arkansas, when she was just 18 years old. She and Willard, known as Poppy, had one child, Melinda Jane (Ghan) Pound. Mimi worked at Sears Roebuck & CO in Kansas City, KS for 24 years, retiring from the company at 58 years old.

Mimi leaves quite the name legacy: her daughter, Melinda Jane; her granddaughter, Lacey Jane (Pound) Smith; her great-granddaughter, Darby Jane Smith; and her great-great-granddaughter, Isla Jane Korb. This is a testament to the impact her life has had on those around her, honoring her with the naming of four generations of Jane's.

Mimi is survived by her daughter, Melinda (Stephen) Pound; her granddaughters, Lacey (Lance) Smith, Ashlee (Nathan) Rowson, and Amber (John) Freerksen. She has ten great-grandchildren, Zaide (Rylee) Korb, Darby Smith, Colter Smith, Aubrey Smith, Clayton Smith; Lorelai Rowson, Oliver Rowson, Gemma Rowson; Breckin Freerksen, Dallen Freerksen; and one great-great-grandchild, Isla Korb. She is loved and will be missed dearly.

Joyce married Donald Anderson on October 18, 1958. They were married 52 years when Donald passed away in 2011. They owned and operated Anderson’s Upholstery together, opening the business in 1964 in Johnson County, KS. This became a family business with their son David working with them for many years, and all of their grandkids loved visiting “the shop.” They closed the business in 2007 when they retired and moved to Joplin, MO.

Joyce loved many things—quilting, cooking, baseball, bowling, and more—but she was defined by her fierce love for her family. She was surrounded by grandkids and great grandkids for most of her life, and they became her passion. She had the most contagious laugh, and you could rarely catch her without a smile on her face. She loved telling stories and could make a friend anywhere. Her legacy will live on in each recipe she perfected, quilt she stitched, and story she shared, but most importantly, in the joy that radiated from her.

Joyce is survived by her daughter Mary Boles and son David Anderson (Kelly); grandchildren Tina McAfee (Brad), John Boles (Jessica), Jeff Boles (Alison), Jessica Morey (Caleb), Hannah Aldridge (Jonathan), Holly Bennett (Paden), and Kelsey Hook; as well as 16 great-grandchildren.

Chris Austin

(From Fohn Funeral Home)

Christopher James “Chris” Austin, age 33, of Purdy, Missouri, left this earth for his heavenly reward on April 25, 2026, due to natural causes. He passed away at home with his boots off.

He was born April 20, 1993, in Springfield, Missouri, the son of James Austin and Jacqueline McCord.

Chris grew up and attended school in Purdy. He was a kind, gentle, and simple man whose greatest pleasures usually involved spending time outdoors and at his brother’s farm with his son, niece, and nephews. In Chris’s words, “I'm a man of God. I love to be a dad, work, hunt and fish. Respect and honesty go a long way.”

He was an incredibly devoted father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. Fiercely protective of his son and family, he made sure those he loved were always cared for above all else. Chris had a heart of gold and was always looking for ways to help others, often in quiet, unseen ways. He gave generously of himself and never expected anything in return. He worked as a mechanic in his adult life, and in his free time, he could usually be found mowing lawns and assisting his elderly relatives and neighbors in thoughtful ways. Chris will be desperately missed by all those who knew and loved him. While his passing leaves a deep hurt in our family, we know his suffering is now past and he has a new suit of heavenly garments and is at peace with his Father and Lord Savior, Jesus Christ.

Surviving are his son, Christopher Malakai Austin of Republic, Missouri, whose father’s love knew no bounds; mother, Jacqueline McCord of Purdy; father, James Austin of Republic; older brother, Michael Austin of Exeter, Missouri; older sister, Courtney Austin of Memphis, Tennessee; younger brothers, Jeffrey Austin of Springfield, Missouri and Dathan Austin of Republic, and younger sisters, Opal Austin and Rhealynn Austin of Republic. Also surviving are his grandmother, Rose (Hancock) Cooper of Purdy; nana, Carol Porter of Germantown, Tennessee, and grandfather, James Austin Sr. of Memphis, in addition to nieces and nephews, and countless aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Chris was preceded in death and welcomed home by one of the most cherished men in his life, his grandpa, Elmer “Shorty” Hancock, with whom he spent many a day fishing and enjoying the outdoors with, and who was a beloved mentor to Chris during his childhood.

The family wishes to extend their most sincere gratitude and thanks to the outpouring of support from the community during this time of heartbreak. The love received has been overwhelming and greatly humbling.

Family and friends are warmly invited to join us for a celebration of life. All those who attend are encouraged to wear their boots in honor of Chris.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Chris’s childhood church of Longview Methodist Church in Purdy, Missouri. Reverend Mark Moller, Chris’s uncle, will conduct the services. A private burial will be held at Log Church Memorial Gardens in Butterfield, Missouri. Cremation arrangements are under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville.

In lieu of flowers, and in honor of the kindness and generosity Chris showed throughout his life, our family has established a GoFundMe account. Donations will go toward immediate funeral and burial expenses. Any additional funds will be placed into a trust for his nine year old son, Christopher Malakai Austin, so we can continue to ensure he is cared for in the way his father would have wanted.

Boots off now, Chris. May your eternal rest be of peace. We love you so much.
