Michael Marion John (Mike) Cox, age 62, of Joplin, Mo., made his final deployment to his heavenly home on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, from Mercy Hospital, Joplin.
Mike was born Sept. 6, 1953, at Luke Air Force Base, Glendale, Ariz., to Marion Cox and Donna Schommer Cox. In 1971 he graduated from Chanute (Kan.) High School.
After graduation he proudly answered his country’s call and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of Petty Officer First Class. Mike was active duty during the Vietnam War, Desert Storm and Desert Shield. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for Milnot as an industrial electrician. Mike was a member of Crossroads Christian Church, Baxter Springs, Kan. He loved hunting, fishing, bird watching and woodworking.
On April 21, 1973, Mike married Terry Ferguson, in Baxter Springs. She survives.
Additional survivors include his parents; sons, Michael McKenzie (Angie), Parsons, Kan., Michael M.J. Cox (Emma) and Nicholas Cox (Jamie), of Ft. Worth, Texas; daughters, Krissenda Leigh-Pink (Aaron), San Diego, Calif., Shanna Malmberg (John), Megan Welch (Matthew), and Madelyn Hoffman (Andrew), Joplin; brothers, Dan, Rick and Jeff Cox; sisters, Kim Mills and Mary Meek; 15 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; plus extended family and friends. His grandparents, Guy and Gladys Cox and Nicholas and Josephine Schommer, preceded him in death.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be held Friday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. at Park Cemetery, Columbus, Kan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project in memory of Mike.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
