James was born August 21, 1939 in Hopland, California, to Richard Tremayne and Bessie (Adaberry) Tremayne. On June 6, 1976, James married Ana May White in Reno, Nevada.

Survivors include his wife Ana; one son, Jerry Sooter, Yuma, Arizona; three daughters, Awanda Howard, Lamar, MO, Rose Marshall, Redding, California, Kimberly Tremayne, Campbellsville, Kentucky; one brother Leonard; one sister, Alice; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
