Robert Parker

Robert Lynn Parker, age 75, passed from this life peacefully Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Galena Nursing Center of Galena.

Rob was born March 5, 1949 in Baxter Springs to Robert and Joan Parker. They preceded him in death.

He was raised most of his life in Galena and attended Galena High School. He served his country in the United States Army as a heavy equipment operator. He volunteered for duty in Vietnam, but at the last minute the Army changed his orders, and he was sent to Alaska.

Rob lived and worked for many years in Branson, Missouri, where he retired after a career in HVAC and building maintenance. He also enjoyed working occasionally as temporary help at the shows there.

Over the years, Rob enjoyed many hobbies and interests, including fishing and going to resale shops, antique stores, and flea markets. He enjoyed a hot cup of coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts. Music was always a big part of his life. He panned for gold in the mountains of Colorado and even gave how-to demonstrations to the tourists. He told interesting tales of his adventures in Alaska, including going to the North Pole on an expedition with the University of Alaska.

Robert is survived by son Chris Parker (Terra) of Baxter Springs, (mother Martina), son Ben Phillips (Paulina) of Langston, Alabama, daughter Heather Schutz (Mike) of Galena, (mother Ramona), son Austin Parker of Branson, MO, (mother Tammy), five grandchildren Kanin Parker, Evan Duckett (Abby), Alex Duckett, Ethan Durbin, and Annica Schutz, and one great-granddaughter Addilynn Duckett. Two sisters, Vicki Rahall (Bill) of Galena and Brenda Button (Darrell) of Rogers, AR, and two brothers, Ron Parker (Judi) of Galena and Greg Parker of Joplin, MO. Also several nieces, nephews, their children, and many cousins.

Mr. Parker has been entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena for cremation. The family will host a memorial graveside service at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 6, 2024 at Oak Hill Cemetery of Galena. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.

Steve Saia

Steven “Steve” P. Saia, 68, of Joplin, Missouri, formerly of Frontenac, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at the Solace House in Joplin, following a short illness.

Steve was born on June 16, 1956, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He had resided for the past 13 years in Joplin; however, most of his life he resided in Frontenac, Kansas. He was an engineer for the Kansas City Southern and Missouri Northern Arkansas (MNA) Railroads for many years before retiring. He was of the Catholic faith. He enjoyed going to Casinos, playing pool, fishing, he enjoyed watching YouTube videos, enjoyed traveling with his wife, and in previous years was a scuba diver.

He married Linda VanBuskirk on October 26, 1987, in Pittsburg, Kansas and she survives.

Other survivors include; one son, Matthew Dutton of Pittsburg, Kansas and one daughter, Lindsay (Mike Burney) Altheide of Joplin, Missouri; two brothers, David (Carolyn Wood) Saia of Arma, Kansas and Scott (Cheryl) Saia of Joplin, Missouri; two sisters, Shari Saia of Girard, Kansas and Mona (John) Miller of Topeka, Kansas; Nine Grandchildren, Brittney (Devin) Linn, Jeremy Dutton, Dylan Altheide, Peyton Altheide, Remi Dutton, Jace Dutton, Easton Burney, Jake Burney, and Harper Burney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Philip and Marilyn Bavaro Saia; one brother, Vincent Saia; and one Grandchild, Dawson Linn.

Per his wishes Steve will be cremated with a Celebration of Life held at a later date.

Services have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory in Joplin, Missouri.

Ron Boswell

Ronald Boswell, 81, entered into eternal rest on Aug 30, 2024 at Carthage Health & Rehab in Carthage, MO.

Ron was born in Joplin on Dec 2, 1943. He was one of 7 children of the late Ralph & Pauline Boswell.

He went to a 1 room school, grades 1-8, then to Sarcoxie High School where he graduated. He retired from Carthage Water in Carthage, MO.

He enjoyed going fishing and had a cold beverage.

Preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Gary, Darrell, Bud Boswell.

Ron is survived by 4 sons, Kevin Boswell, Joplin, Jason, Jimmy Boswell from Kentucky, Donovan Edwards, Riverton, KS, stepdaughter Jackie. He had 3 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 1 brother Mike (Brenda) Sarcoxie.

Two sisters: Kathleen Greenwood (Erie) of Joplin, Janice Burgess, Joplin.

Numerous nephews & nieces.

Ron’s wishes was to be cremated and a burial at a later date.

Mary Brand

Mary Ann Brand, 81, Neosho, Missouri, passed away early Thursday morning, August 29, 2024, at Oak Pointe of Neosho. She was born August 12, 1943, in Harrisburg, Illinois, the daughter of the late Paul E. Tarrant and Margaret N. (Bruce) Tarrant. Mary graduated from North City High School in Illinois and later attended Lockyear Business College in Evansville, Indiana. 

Mary worked as a bookkeeper and data entry for Al’s Gas Company in Neosho. She married Carl Brand on October 26, 1991, in Neosho, Missouri. Mary was a member of the Sheep Shed Church in Neosho.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Carl Brand; her daughters, Dana VanMeter, Centralia, Illinois, and Melissa VanMeter, Neosho, Missouri; her stepdaughter, Cindy Brand, Neosho, Missouri; her stepsons, William Brand, Joplin, Missouri, James Brand (Candace), Tulsa, Oklahoma, Michael Brand, Joplin, Missouri, and Matthew Brand, Neosho, Missouri; her brother, Bruce Tarrant (Lana), Neosho, Missouri; seven grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Lindell Tarrant and Edward Tarrant.

Funeral services will be held 10 am, Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at the Sheep Shed, Neosho, Missouri. The burial will follow at the Sheep Shed Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Knell Mortuary from 5-7 pm, Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

Lynda Downey

Lynda Downey, age 76, of Butterfield, passed away on August 29, 2024, at Jacob’s Ladder Nursing Home in Springfield. 

Lynda, daughter of Hartford and Dotty (Crawford) Talbert, was born on August 12, 1948, in Monett. She was an avid football fan and enjoyed attending all sports activities in which her grandchildren participated. She worked in the Cassville Elementary School cafeteria for many years before her retirement. Lynda was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Cassville. 

She married James Downey on July 10, 1970; he preceded her on death on October 24, 2014. She and Jim spent many hours square dancing. 

Survivors include one son, John Downey and his wife Shanda, of Butterfield; three grandchildren, Alyssa, Joshua, and Justin; three brothers, Danny Talbert of Pierce City, Mike Talbert of Neosho, and Rusty Talbert of Granby; three sisters, Sandy Wicker, of Reavisville, Sally Chapman, of St. Roberts, and Kathy Allen, of Oronogo; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers. 

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at the White Funeral Home & Crematory in Cassville, with Pastor Rich Cummings officiating; burial will follow at Russell Cemetery north of Cassville. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at the funeral home.

Tom Casady

Thomas Dean Casady II, Neosho, Missouri, went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 29, 2024, at the age of 72. 

Tom was born at the home of his great-grandmother in Ottumwa, Iowa on May 28, 1952, the oldest child of Thomas Dean and Colleen Marvetta (Tuttle) Casady. He graduated from Unionville High School, Unionville, Missouri in 1970. He continued his education at NE Missouri State, now Truman State, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1974 and a master’s degree in educational administration in 1981. He taught high school science from 1974 to 1978. 

He began a career with Hollister Inc., in Kirksville, Missouri as Quality Assurance (QA) Supervisor, retiring as the QA Manager on January 1, 2001. In June of 2000, the family moved from Kirksville to Neosho, and Tom commuted until his retirement. 

In 2002, he served as associate Pastor to his father, Thomas Dean Casady at Sweetwater Baptist Church and in March of 2003, was called to serve as full time pastor. He loved and served the Sweetwater congregation until his last Lord’s Supper service on June 2, 2024. 

Tom enjoyed deer, turkey and elk hunting with his sons, father, brother and good friend Garry Matthews. He loved restoring and driving his 1953 Ford Anniversary Model truck and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed playing with five close friends on a regular basis and the fellowship of the Wednesday Morning Neosho Golf League. He dearly loved his grandbabies and spending time with family brought him immense joy. 

On November 7, 1971, at the Omaha Baptist Church, Omaha, Missouri, Tom and Rose Charlene Smith were united in marriage and Charlene survives. 

In addition to his wife of fifty-two years, he is survived by three sons, Cyle Casady and wife, Victoria of O’Fallon, Missouri, Jeff Casady of Neosho and Wesley Casady and wife, Brittni of Granby; four grandsons, Casey, Xander, Nate and Jace; two granddaughters, Gweni and Abi; one sister, Jane Halley and husband, David of Unionville, Missouri; one brother, Craig Casady and wife, Linda of Granby, Missouri; stepmother, Patricia Casady of Hollister, Missouri and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Rubena Cox

Rubena Cox, age 87, of Granby, Missouri passed away on August 28, 2024. She was born on March 2, 1937, in Ritchey, Missouri to Horace and Eunice (Willoughby) Laurance. She was a 1955 graduate of Midway High School. 

She was a skilled seamstress, a talented cook and took pride in tending to her yard. She served on the election board for many years and was a member of the Ritchey Holiness Church. Her commitment to her family was unwavering and her legacy of love and kindness will forever be cherished by those she leaves behind.

On August 17, 1955, Rubena and Bill Cox were united in marriage. Bill preceded her in death on September 16, 2007. 

She is survived by three children, Sheryl Cox of Granby; Pam Ramsey and husband, Dale of Seneca; and Bryan Cox of Neosho. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Heath Ramsey of Seneca and Aaron Ramsey of Dallas, Texas. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Horace Jr. Laurance and Kenneth Bagby.

A Graveside Service to honor and celebrate Rubena's life will be held at Union Cemetery near Bethpage Community, on September 3, 2024, at 10:00 am. The ceremony will mark a final farewell as Rubena is laid to rest.

Bob Peck

Robert Dean Peck, 90, of Sarcoxie, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2024, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born on Saturday, November 4, 1933, in Carthage, Missouri to the union of the late Ranzel Dean (Sandy) and Dorothy Elizabeth (Lovett) Peck. He was a 1951 graduate of Carthage High School. 

Bob proudly served in the United States Army. During his term he received several commendations, National Defense Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Germany) and Good Conduct Medal. 

On September 19, 1959, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Carol Adrian Moquin. Together they shared nearly sixty-five years of wonderful memories. He was employed with Eagle Picher in Joplin, Missouri. During his employment he was a precision machinist, foremen, salesman and consultant. He was a man of strong work ethics and a very dedicated employee. 

 He was a member of Carthage First Nazarene Church in Carthage, Missouri. He enjoyed making coffee every morning for the BASIC Sunday School Class. He was a past deacon of First Baptist Church in Sarcoxie. 

Bob was a very sentimental guy, saving every card, letter from family and friends he saved over the years. He had a great love for the Lord. He was a wonderful family man that loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening and fishing as well as spending time with family and friends. He will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Wayne Allen Peck; grandson, Brandon Lyle Jessip; and sister, Sandra Peck Sullivan.

Bob is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Roberta Suzanne Peck Jessip of Webb City, and Tyler Dean Peck of Sarcoxie; grandchildren, Benjamin Joseph Jessip and wife, Racheal, Andrew Dean Peck and wife, Kera and Stephanie Barwick Jessip; eight great- grandchildren; sister, Betty Jane Peck Stiles; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services are 10:00 Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Carthage First Church of the Nazarene with Dr. Larry White officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Sarcoxie Cemetery. 

Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Ben Jessip, Colby Perrill, Andrew Peck, Brian Korb, Billy Carroll and Dean Stiles. Honorary pallbearers are Tyler Peck, Tom Gish, Dan Mortimer, Dr. Larry McIntire and Steven Dillon. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. prior to the service.

Destiny Jennings

Destiny Ann Jennings, passed away on August 23, 2024, at the age of 22. She was born on May 10, 2002, in the scenic Lake of the Ozarks, MO, to Bonnie Pennington and the late Kenny Jennings.

Destiny's interests were a reflection of her inner beauty. She had a knack for bringing her family together. Her personality was as bright and bubbly as the sunflowers she adored, and she possessed the gentle grace of the butterflies she loved. 

Destiny was always ready to lend a helping hand to others, embodying the very essence of kindness and generosity. She was a proud graduate of Joplin High School where she loved to run track. Above all, Destiny's role as a dedicated mother remained her most treasured accomplishment. Her children were the center of her universe, and her love for them was boundless and pure.

Destiny is survived by her mother, Bonnie Pennington; step-father, James Owens; boyfriend, Christian Blevins; children, River and Maddox Blevins; siblings, Jordan Jennings, Gage Jennings, Trusten Jennings, Piper Jennings, Savannah Owens, Chantel Owens; grandparents, Kim Doyle, Sherry Pennington, Roger Jennings, Belinda Jennings, and Wade Whirley; aunt, Shanna Gonzalez; cousins, Marissa Cross, Autumn Whirley, Stephen Whirley, Felicia and Leona.

Destiny's departure from this world is not only a loss to her family but to all who were touched by her compassionate soul. We celebrate a life that, though brief, was lived with an abundance of love and a commitment to family that will never be forgotten. Her spirit will continue to guide and comfort her children, family, and friends, as they navigate the world without her physical presence but with the enduring presence of her love.

Barbara Ellis

Barbara A. Ellis, age 77, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at her home in Stotts City, MO with her husband by her side. 

She was born in Carthage, MO on Monday, March 24, 1947; daughter of Leon and Betty (Huffman) Aleshire. Barbara was a 1965 graduate of Ashdown High School in Arkansas. 

She married John Ellis on Friday, November 21, 1969, in Joplin, MO. She enjoyed traveling and liked to drive. 

Barbara moved many times as a child and enjoyed seeing the country. She loved working outside and helped her Dad when he was building houses or her husband with heavy equipment and learned to be "handy". She enjoyed crosswords and jigsaw puzzles. She worked at a dry cleaners in Arkansas, substitute taught and worked at a restaurant for a while. She loved to help others and was a caretaker. 

Barbara loved music and enjoyed playing the guitar, organ, and accordion. She taught herself how to play several instruments. She was often John's right hand and helped and supported him with whatever he was doing. Barbara always focused on making the house a home and did what needed to be done. She stayed at home while raising her daughter, Kathy, and they did many things as a family making memories and supporting one another. She will be missed!

Surviving are the following: her husband John of Stotts City, MO; a daughter, Kathy (Harold) Feith of Buckner, MO; two grandsons, Zachary (Adeline) Feith of Clever, MO and Matthew Feith of Tulsa, OK; a sister, Shirley Huff of Joplin, MO; and many friends.

Those welcoming her to heaven include her parents, Leon and Betty Aleshire; a brother-in-law, John Huff; and two nephews, Steven and Robert Huff.

Graveside services will be at Union Cemetery in Stotts City, MO on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, beginning at 1:00 PM with Pastor Larry Herndon officiating. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City, MO.

Lloyd Ditto

Lloyd Alan Ditto passed away August 22, 2024 at National Healthcare in Joplin, Missouri. He was born to Robert and Fern Ditto November 9, 1930 in Kansas City, Missouri. The family lived in Kansas City, Texas, Oklahoma, and Neosho, Missouri where Lloyd graduated from high school in the class of 1949. He was active in sports there, playing football, tennis and American Legion baseball. Lloyd was also in the senior class play and served on the Class Reunion committee years later.

He played tennis for 40 years with friends at the Roanoke public court and the Cypress Acres Tennis
Club. Lloyd was heavily involved in Little League Baseball and helped build Henson Field with other
American League dads. He also enjoyed snow skiing, fishing, and playing golf.

Lloyd attended Joplin Junior College on a football scholarship where he met his future wife, Ruth Marie
Murray. They married in 1953 and together had one son John. He graduated in 1951 and began working at 4-State Radio Supply Company. 

In 1977, Lloyd and Clyde Morrison purchased 4-State Radio Supply and Norman Electronics. These companies later became Cardinal Electronics. He retired in 1996 after 45 years.

He was a partner in Arrowhead Development Company from 1967 to 2002 which enabled many friends and family to purchase property on Beaver Lake. He served in the Naval Reserve from 1953 to 1958 in
Texas. He was a ground crew member on F4U Corsairs and early jet aircraft.

Lloyd married Sara Belden in 1984. They traveled extensively including trips to Europe and the United
Kingdom. They enjoyed many Februarys on Padre Island and Augusts in Cuchara, Colorado.

He was active in civic affairs. Lloyd served on the Needs Assessment Committee for the Joplin R-8
School District and on an advisory committee for Franklin Tech. He was a member of the Joplin Jaycees, Optimist Club, and was a Rotary Club board member. Lloyd was on the Jazz in Joplin Committee from its inception to end. He and Sara were on the Mercy Hospital Blast from the Past committee for 10 years.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Imogene Holloway and Roberta Duckstein, brothers
Harold and Carl Ditto, and nephew Dennis Ditto. He is survived by son John, wife Sara, and stepsons Scott Belden (Judy) and Russ Belden. Additional survivors include nieces Donna Cupp (Steve) and Brenda Holloway.

Dad was a kind and gentle man, a loving father and husband, and always willing to help others. The family would like to thank his caregivers at Freeman Hospital, NHC, and a special thank you to Paula Pruitt, his nurse and neighbor who always went above and beyond in caring for Dad in the home.

A visitation will be held Sunday September 8th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 509 Pearl Avenue in Joplin. A private family graveside service will be held following. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Joplin Humane Society.

Norma Buchanan

Norma Sue Buchanan, 86, of Lamar, MO, passed away peacefully at Truman Health and Rehab on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. Born in Lurton, AR, she was the cherished daughter of Glover and Geneva (Dollar) Davis. 

Norma graduated from Lamar High School in 1957, the same year she married the love of her life, Stanley “Buck” Buchanan, on October 26. Norma dedicated her life to raising her children and nurturing her family. 

For several years, she and Buck traveled across the country, working together, splicing cable for telephone systems. Norma was well-known for her spirited enthusiasm, particularly as an avid bowler and a beloved host of her famous Gumbo Parties. She was a devoted alumna who took great joy in planning and attending class reunions, and she found pleasure in crocheting, especially making dishcloths. Norma cherished her friendships, often gathering with her lifelong girlfriends for adult slumber parties, where they would explore new locations and enjoy weekends filled with laughter and camaraderie. 

Her love for travel was unwavering; she took a trip to Italy, went on many cruises, and explored America on many adventures with Buck and later with her best friend, Jule Fryer. 

Norma is survived by her loving daughter, Cindy Buchanan of Lamar, MO; her devoted grandchildren, Jeremy Buchanan of Baton Rouge, LA, Aimee Rabb of Zachary, LA, Jordan Thibodeaux of Lamar, MO, and Katelyn Buchanan of Liberty, MO; as well as her cherished great-grandchildren, Brendan, Michael, Conner, Payton, Carter, Jordan, and Jaxon. She is also remembered fondly by many extended family members and dear friends. 

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Buck, her parents, her brother Carol Davis, her son Timothy Buchanan, her grandson Kylan Oxendine, and her dear friend and traveling companion, Jule Fryer. 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Class of 1957, in care of the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Memory Garden Cemetery, where Norma will be laid to rest beside her beloved Buck.

Sharon Swartz

Sharon “Gale” Swartz, 78, of Carthage, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2024, at her home. 

Sharon was born on October 10, 1945, in Pampa, Texas to Herbert Tanner and Clara (O’Dell) Tanner. She had her CNA certification and worked as a private duty nurse for many years. She enjoyed crocheting and crafting.

Sharon was joined in marriage to Donald Swartz in 1963; he preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sons, Donald Swartz of Carthage, Eric Swartz (Kim) of Kansas City, Missouri, Travis Swartz of Higginsville, Missouri; two daughters, Debra Pickering (Mark) of Sarcoxie, Missouri and Donna Swartz of Blue Springs, Missouri; one brother, Stephen Tanner of Richmond, Missouri, one sister, Vickie Beaumont of Carthage; 15 grandchildren, Katrina, Chris, Ariel, Nick, Samantha, Mackenzee, Dawn, Selena, Jeremy, Misty, Levi, Ethan, Seth, Vanessa, and Clyde; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Milton Williamson

Milton R. Williamson, 79, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2024, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri. Milton was born on September 27, 1944, in Big Spring, Texas, to Gordon and Myrtle Williamson. He was the landscape foreman at Geo Prison Systems of Texas for 23.5 years. 

Milton was a very Patriotic American; he led several groups of Vets to tour Washington DC. He loved meeting other veterans and building friendships. He always had a smile and something funny to say to brighten anyone’s day. He was very loved and will be very missed. During retirement he enjoyed working on small engines.

Milton was joined in marriage to Rosina Williams on July 30, 1983, in Odessa, Texas; she survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Jeffery Layne McDonald (Dileini) of Diamond, Jim McDonald (Michelle) of Sarcoxie; two daughters, Michelle (Williamson) Gonzalez of Ft. Stockton, Texas, and Tammy Bridges (Larry) of Vinita, Oklahoma; one brother, Melvin Williamson, of Achley, Texas; two sisters, Wanda Moss of Houston, Texas, and Ruth Dunlap of Houston, Texas; one brother in law, James “Shorty” Williams, of Reeds Springs, Missouri; one sister in law, Katheryn Williams of Kimberling City, Missouri; one dear friend Gene Wilson of San Angelo, Texas; 14 grandchildren, Cassandra and Cheyenne Flores, Jeremy Lynn, Billy Ray McDonald (Lisa), Taylor McDonald, Helyana, Trenton, Hayden, Weston, Arianna and William McDonald, Taylor Biscarro (Jeremy), Maddison Pita, Charleigh Bridges; 10 great grandchildren, Tinzlee Duffer, Faith Boggs, Scarlet Boggs, Breenan, Morgan, Zayne, Raven, and Rowen McDonald, Jeremiah and Judah Biscarro; and his three furry companions, Peaches, Bear, and Princess.

There will be a funeral service for Milton at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Ulmer Funeral Home.

Shirley Dickinson

Shirley P. Dickinson, age 91, passed away at 6:04 pm, Friday, August 23, 2024 at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, Missouri.

Shirley was born August 13, 1933 in Eureka, Kansas. Her parents were William Perry and Ada Louise Mitchell. She lived most of her life in Oswego, Kansas.

She worked as a seamstress at Glenn Berry Manufacturing for 25 years. She then began driving a school bus for USD 504, Oswego, for over 10 years. At the same time, she was a homemaker and helped her husband work at their family farm. She was also a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant.

She was a very talented person. She performed in various country music bands while playing guitar and singing at venues around the area. She enjoyed cooking and making porcelain dolls. Shirley was a member of First Baptist Church, Oswego, Kansas.

Shirley was married to Austin William Grant Dickinson on November 26, 1955 in Oswego, Kansas. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Austin Matthew Dickinson, two sisters, Mary Medlin, Janice Roy; and one brother, William Mitchell.

She is survived by one daughter, Lydia King (Kent), Vian, Oklahoma; one daughter in law, Tori Dickinson, Oswego, Kansas; one sister, Gaile Dickinson, Oswego, Kansas; five grandchildren, Austin Campmier, Derek Schmitt, Nichole Mahnke, Amanda Schmitt, and Matthew Dickinson; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 10:00 am, Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Oswego. Walter Keener l officiated. Burial was at Oswego Cemetery.


The family received friends from 9:00 to 10:00 am, Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at the funeral home.

Patty Burge

Surrounded by family, Patricia Ann (Patty) Burge slipped away to meet Jesus face to face on August 28, 2024, at the age of 75. She faced her final days with courage and strength that came from her deep abiding faith in God and her assurance that she would be joining loved ones in heaven.

Patty was born in Monett, MO in 1949 to Philip Brittenham and Rena (Davis) Brittenham. She attended school in Purdy, Missouri. In 1966 she was united in marriage to Dennis Burge, and he survives. They shared 58 years together and to this union 4 sons were born.

Patty spent her life in service to others. As a pastor’s wife, she spent many years serving their congregation as music director and pianist and teacher, along with the many other church responsibilities that she so faithfully fulfilled. She had a great many interests and was never idle. Her love of nature was evident in her beautiful flower beds she loved to maintain and by the many animals that found their way to her door and were taken in, nurtured, and loved over the years. She will be greatly missed by Old Red and Buddy.

While the last several years were dedicated wholly to her service to the Lord, she worked at a variety of jobs in previous years including Crossmark where she was responsible for assembling complicated merchandise displays for area Walmart stores. One of her most satisfying endeavors was the authoring of a cookbook published in 2017 for which she compiled, prepared, and photographed each recipe used. She tackled this project and each responsibility in life with the determination to do the job well.

Serving God took top priority in her life, but next in importance was her family. Her goal from the beginning was to raise each of her sons to come to a saving knowledge of our Lord and Savior whom she came to know and trust at a very early age. Her life was a living example of the spiritual truths she taught her sons. Someone once said, “Wherever a beautiful soul has been there is a trail of beautiful memories.” This describes our Patty.

She will be missed by many people including: her husband, Dennis Burge; four sons, Ken Burge (Olivia) of Montgomery, TX, Daniel Burge (Corey)of Bonham, TX, Tony Burge (Ann) of Carthage, MO, Fred Burge (Sarah) of Carthage, MO; ten grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Jackson of Stark City, MO and Marilyn Baker (Gary) of Monett, MO and a brother, David Brittenham of Monett, MO; Sister-in-laws Janie Vermillion (Jim) of Springfield, MO, Beverly Burge of Republic, MO, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10: A.M. on September 7th at Macedonia Church near Purdy, MO with visitation the hour preceding the service. Services will be conducted by Brother Lee Neil. She will be laid to rest near her parents at Bethel Cemetery South of Monett. Arrangements are under the direction of Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett, MO.

Bob Williams

Robert Eugene Williams, Sr., known affectionately as Bob, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home in Southwest City, Missouri, on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. He was born on May 25, 1942, in Washburn, Missouri, to the late Ronald and Farrell (Gardner) Williams.

Bob's early years were spent in the town of his birth, where he was raised and attended school. He was drafted into United States Army, where he served his country with honor during the Vietnam War. It was while stationed at Ft. Lewis in Washington that Bob met the love of his life, Janet Ruth Dowdy. The couple married on December 28, 1964, and embarked on a life journey that would take them to a farm in Southwest City, Missouri, in 1969, it was there, they raised their family.

Throughout his life, Bob was known for his unwavering work ethic. He drove a truck for the majority of his career and dedicated 20 years to Hudson/Tyson Foods in Noel. Bob was not only a truck driver but also a hardworking farmer. He managed cattle, operated chicken houses, and custom baled hay. Janet, his devoted wife, worked alongside him on the family farm, and together they built a life full of love and labor.

Bob's family was the center of his world. He is survived by his wife, Janet Williams of the home; two children, Gail Beal and Robert Williams, Jr., both of Southwest City; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter, Kaysha Bourg, who resides at the home; and ten additional great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. He also leaves behind three sisters, Sharon Mitchell of Weston, Oregon, Faye Hodgen of Milton-Freewater, Oregon, and Debi Smith of Athena, Oregon. His extended family and a host of friends will fondly remember Bob's generous spirit and kind heart.

Despite his busy life, Bob always made time for his grandchildren, cherishing every moment spent with them. His interests extended beyond the farm; he enjoyed elk hunting and looked forward to vacations in Colorado, where he could immerse himself in the beauty of the wilderness. Bob was a man of faith, and his beliefs were an integral part of who he was. He approached every challenge with determination and every success with humility.

No formal services will be held at this time. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson, Missouri.

Barbara Smith

Barbara Jean Smith, of Springfield, MO, departed this life on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Wilson’s Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility in Springfield, MO at the age of 80.

She was born on February 27, 1944 in Dade County, MO to Keller and Maggie (Cowan) Smith. Barbara graduated from Dadeville High School in 1962, and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Southwest Missouri State College. She was a dedicated lifelong teacher.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Keller and Maggie Smith; two brothers, Amos Smith and Verl Smith; and two sisters, Ethel Smith and Elvah Smith.

Survivors include one sister, Mary Smith; seven nieces; two nephews; and a host of great nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at the Dadeville Masonic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dadeville Masonic Cemetery. Services are under the care of Greenfield Funeral Chapel.

James Ryan

James Arthur Ryan, Sr., age 77, Neosho, MO, passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2024 at his home with family at his side.

James was born September 16, 1946 in Williams, AZ, son of the late Victor Ryan and Emma (Allen) Ryan. He grew up in Carterville, MO where he graduated from Carterville High School and was a gifted athlete before attending Missouri Southern State University where he got a degree in engineering. 

He was drafted by the United States Army while in college and served for several years in Germany and with the reserves. He returned to Carterville and began Jim Ryan Roofing and Remodeling. He did this for many years with his wife and son. He was devoted to serving the Lord and attending Tabernacle Church in Joplin.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Wanda Lou (McKeehan) Ryan who passed away on June 4, 2017.

 

Survivors include his children, James A. Ryan, Jr. and wife Tara of Seneca, MO, Melissa Jones and husband Pastor Jarrod Jones of Neosho, MO, Joseph Ryan and wife Candice of Racine, MO, Tamara Call and husband Phillip of Ozark, MO, Cassandra Ryan of Springfield, MO, Robin Alley and husband Pastor Michael Alley of Sulphur Springs, AR; 25 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Dan Ryan, Tim Ryan, Roy Ryan, Tom Ryan, Nathan Ryan, and Phillip Ryan; sisters, Mary Forsythe and Joanna Sparlin; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Friday, August 30, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at Tabernacle Church, 1024 E. 2nd St., Joplin. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Bill Schmitt

William "Bill" H. Schmitt II entered into eternal rest on August 27, 2024 following a long illness.

Bill was born in St. Louis, Missouri on February 2, 1947, the oldest son of the late William and Juanita Schmitt. He attended Crystal City High School where he excelled in athletics, eventually earning a full-ride scholarship to play football at the University of Missouri. 

While attending Mizzou, Bill excelled academically and athletically. It was at Mizzou where Bill met the love of his life, Elizabeth McGaughey. The two married on June 21, 1969 in Greenville, Texas. In 1970, Bill was drafted to the Cincinnati Bengals. After a brief stint with the Bengals, Bill returned to Mizzou, earning a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy. After several moves across the country, Bill and Liz settled in Joplin, Missouri where they created a loving home for their sons William Ryan and Tyson Sharp Schmitt. Bill had a successful career as a Physical Therapist and Director of Rehabilitation. He retired in 2013.

Bill enjoyed being at the lake with his family, duck hunting, and golf. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Bill was a devout follower of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; he kept and relied on that faith his entire life. These values he passed down to his family.

Bill passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.

Bill is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth and sons William Ryan Schmitt (wife Susan) and Tyson Sharp Schmitt (wife Angie) and 7 beautiful grandchildren Will, Lizzy, Collin, Claire, Anna, Tyra, and Jett. He is also survived by one brother Robert "Bob" Schmitt.

Memorial services have been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation immediately following the service.

Carolyn Barber

Carolyn Bernice Barber, age 61, Oswego, KS passed away Friday, August 23, 2024, at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO.

She was born March 18, 1963, in Helena, AR, to the late Harry Barber and Mary Tyus Barber. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel and James Meadows; and two sisters, Patricia Barber and Mary Cavitt.

Carolyn worked for many years as a certified med aide for area nursing homes.

Survivors include one son, Ty Barber, Webb City, MO; two brothers, Bryan Barber and Rainey Meadows; two sisters, Brenda Barber and Marion Larkins; many nieces; and great nieces.

Carolyn has been entrusted to the Derfelt Funeral Home Oswego, for cremation. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of the Derfelt Funeral Home of Oswego.

Jerry Smith

Jerry Wayne Smith, age 84, passed away August 2, 2024, in Rowlett, Texas. He was born on March 24, 1940, in Joplin, Missouri, to his loving parents Stephen F. Smith and Dorothy F. (Carnes) Smith.

Jerry grew up in Joplin. After graduating from Joplin High School in 1958, he continued his education at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, earning an associate degree. Jerry proudly served in the United States Air Force in peacetime during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

 

On October 3, 1961, Jerry married the love of his life, Susan Kay Wells, in Joplin, Missouri. Raising their daughter Sherri brought them many years of joy and countless cherished memories.

Jerry spent 25 years with Eastman-Kodak and then another significant period with Plano Power Equipment until retiring in 2010. His career spanned a time of significant change in technology and industry, particularly with Kodak’s evolution from film to digital.

Jerry is survived by his daughter, Sherri Hernandez, of Rowlett, Texas; granddaughter, Chelsea Bedard (Nathan), of Tiger, Oregon; two great grandsons, Nathaniel and Jonah; several cousins and nieces; and a host of family members and friends, who will miss him dearly and forever cherish his memory.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Kay (Wells) Smith; and parents, Stephen and Dorothy (Carnes) Smith.

A memorial service with Military Funeral Honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2024, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel in Allen, Texas.

Interment will take place at a later date. Jerry will be reunited next to his beloved wife in Ozark Memorial Park.

Rita Young

Rita Mae Young, 82, of Rogers, Ark., passed away peacefully Saturday, August 24, 2024, after a sudden illness. Rita was born on May 18, 1942, in Adrian, Mo., to the late Chester Earl Ashbaugh and Della Mae (Crall) Ashbaugh.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Karen Howard; nephews, Chad and Mike Howard; in-laws, Mitchell "Mike" and Ethel Young; and brother-in-law, Forrest Young. 

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Philip "Coach" Young; children, Bradley Young (Mary Jane) of Fort Scott, Kan., Brenda Young of Rogers, Ark., and Becky Bahnks (Michael) of Bryant, Ark.; grandchildren, Carter Young, McKenzie Park (Young), Caden Young, Ty Bahnks, and Cooper Bahnks. Rita is also survived by her loving sister, Kay Jenkins (Lewis) of Oak Grove, Mo.; and numerous other loved family members and friends. 

Rita grew up on a farm outside Adrian, Mo. Her children always enjoyed listening to stories about her life on the farm, her guitar-playing performances with her sister Kay, and dances and dates with Phil, her high school sweetheart and husband of 61 years. She was always involved in school activities. She was Homecoming Queen and Valedictorian of her graduating class of 1960. Rita was awarded multiple honors throughout her schooling including the National Honor Society and the Good Citizen Award for Senior Girls. 

Rita attended the University of Central Missouri where she attained an associate's degree and later went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree in Teaching from Missouri Southern State College. Rita spent her life devoted to her husband and family, always putting their needs and dreams ahead of her own. Rita supported Phil in his coaching endeavors, no matter where the path led. They spent 16 years of their lives in Neosho, Mo., where they raised their children and created lifelong friendships. Every Friday night, Rita was in attendance to support Phil's football team. 

In 1988, they moved to Rogers, Ark. Rita spent 16 years teaching in the Rogers School District at Garfield Elementary and Reagan Elementary as a 2nd grade teacher. Rita loved her students and coworkers and poured into them daily until she retired in 2004. 

Known as "Nana," Rita spent her later years spoiling her grandchildren and caring for her husband, Phil. She found her happiness in the simple things of life and serving those she loved. Her only desire was to be with family and spend time with those she loved the most. She always enjoyed a good meal with friends and family, watching a lively country music show, or watching a ballgame, especially the Kansas City Chiefs or the Kansas City Royals. She also looked forward to her daily phone talks with her daughters and sister. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church of Rogers, Ark. 

Visitation will be on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 9 a.m. at Rollins Funeral Home Chapel, 1401 Hudson Road, Rogers, Ark. Funeral service will follow beginning at 10 a.m. A private family burial will be held at 2 p.m. at Cresent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, Mo. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Broyles Foundation supporting Alzheimer's Caregivers.

Melissa Routledge

Melissa L. Routledge, who was born January 8, 1969 and died August 24, 2024, was a loving mother to Brittany Edwards (Routledge) and Fiancè John Dickerson; Lewis Arnett Jr. and wife Jessica Arnett. She was a proud grandma to Caia, Zaiden, and Alaina. 

She always had a shoulder for you to cry on, or an ear to vent to. She was very close to her mother, siblings, nieces,nephews, and all the great nieces and nephews as well.

She is preceded in death by her husband Donald "Will" Routledge, who passed December 9, 2020.

She will be missed tremendously.

Andrew Grant

Andrew Robert Grant, 63, of Lamar, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Andrew was born in Delhi, New York, to Robert and Gladys (Deeter) Grant. The family later relocated to Joplin, Missouri, where Andrew graduated from Joplin High School. 

After high school, Andrew moved to Pittsburg, Kansas, and joined the National Guard, where he served his country with dedication for ten years. 

He pursued his passion for precision and engineering by attending trade school to become a machinist. Andrew’s skill and commitment to his craft were evident throughout his 26-year career at Van Becelaere Machine Shop. 

In 2006, Andrew married the love of his life, Crystal Hunsaker, on December 2. The couple lived in Pittsburg, Kansas, raising their children before moving to Lamar, Missouri, after their children had grown. 

Andrew was a man of creativity and detail. He found joy in engineering small model parts, such as wheels, where he meticulously glued and soldered them together. Known for his love of camouflage, he could often be found in camo gear, watching funny animal videos on YouTube or movies on Amazon Prime. His simple pleasures included sharing coffee with Crystal while watching "The Price is Right" and enjoying dates at the laundromat or Walmart—reveling in what he lovingly called a "boring, happy life." 

Andrew is survived by his beloved wife, Crystal, of Lamar, Missouri; his children, Alex Grant of Pittsburg, Kansas, and Annie (Austin) Robinson of Pittsburg, Kansas; and his cherished grandchildren, Dean and Alice. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Gladys Grant. 

The family plans to hold a memorial service at a later date, with details to be shared when available. Andrew's legacy of love, precision, and simplicity will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Patricia Sooter

Patricia Louise Sooter, 94, of Sarcoxie, Missouri, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2024, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family.

Patricia was born on Friday, March 21, 1930, in rural Jasper County, Missouri to the union of the late William and Jewell (Berry) Welde. She was a graduate of Sarcoxie High School. 

On August 29, 1948, she was united in marriage to the love her life, Jack Wayne Sooter, sharing almost forty wonderful years of memories until his passing on February 14, 1988. For many years she worked as a secretary for a physician’s office. Patricia was a very dedicated and loyal employee. She was a lifetime member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene and a current member of the Progressive Club in Sarcoxie. She enjoyed gardening, taking care of her home in which she resided for nearly forty years and spending time with her family and friends. Patricia will truly be missed by those who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, Neal Eugene Sooter; great-granddaughter, Adalynne Sooter; brother, Billy Welde; and son-in-law, Raymond Downey.

Patricia is survived by her children, Dennis Sooter and wife, Theresa, of Sarcoxie, Mark Sooter and wife, Cindy, of Nixa, Gregory Sooter and wife, Ann, of Carthage and Treva Downey of Springfield; ten grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Gene Sooter and wife, Wilma, of Murfreesboro, TN; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sooter are 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 30, 2024, at Calvary Church of the Nazarene in Joplin, Missouri, with pastors Wesley Anderson and Jim Martin officiating. 

Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Kevin Sooter, Isaac Sooter, Jeremiah Sooter, Matt Sooter, Jeff Thompson and Greg Downey. Honorary pallbearer will be Josh Sooter. Burial will follow in Sarcoxie Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
