Bill Cox

Bill R. Cox formerly of Carthage, MO., most recently of Jefferson City, MO., left this world the way he would want to, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

Bill was born November 20, 1933 in Marietta, MS. to Olgar Bell and Joseph Richard Cox. He spent much of his childhood and youth picking cotton as his family was sharecroppers in Mississippi and Arkansas. He attended school in Dyess, Arkansas.








Bill was drafted and served his country during the Korean War. He continued in the Reserves after returning stateside. Bill moved to Carthage, MO in 1951. He married his loving life partner, Doris S. Cox, on December 9, 1960 in Miami, OK. He was dedicated to her until her death in 2005. Bill and Doris spent their life and grew their family in Carthage.

Bill had a strong work ethic which continued throughout his life. He frequently worked multiple jobs at a time. He had a 21-year career at the Carthage Police Department. As a police officer, he loved working with the community and being of service to others. After retirement, Bill continued to work. He was not a person to be idle and loved to stay active.

In Bill's spare time he enjoyed being outdoors and going to the lake. He loved to BBQ briskets and spending time in his shop making and fixing things. Bill also enjoyed country dancing with his wife and friends. Bill loved all animals, especially dogs and cats. He had a great sense of humor and always had a humorous comeback or joke to share. His favorite activity was spending time with his family.

Loving surviving family members include two children, Janie (Ray) Potts and Shelly (Matt) Woodson; and three grandchildren, Brendon Potts, Carly (Connor) Potts Hanna all of Jefferson City, MO and Jordan Woodson of St. Charles, MO. Bill has one younger surviving brother, Pete (Jolene) Cox of Lepanto, AR.








Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents, and his older brother, Joe Cox.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
