(From Simpson Funeral Home)Doris E. Leggett, age 102, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, in Carthage, Missouri.
She was born on July 2, 1922, in Clinton, Illinois, to Harry C. and Zella F. Washburn. Doris had one brother, Harold Washburn, who, along with her parents, preceded her in death.
On March 17, 1946, Doris married the love of her life, Vernon D. Leggett of Wapella, Illinois. Together, they shared 71 adventuresome years of marriage before Vernon’s passing on November 3, 2017.
After operating a successful farm for many years, Doris and Vernon embraced retirement as a new chapter filled with adventure—relocating wherever their hearts led them. Their journey took them to Texas, where they built homes near San Antonio and later in Paris. Eventually, they built a home in Missouri before settling next to one of their children. They created countless cherished memories with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren especially during frequent visits to Disney and peaceful walks along the beaches of Daytona. They loved to travel to many parks and enjoy meals together while gazing upon the mountains.
Doris found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved to cook and made many homemade pies, applesauce and great meals. She also enjoyed quilting, cross-stitching, and spent many peaceful hours working on puzzles.
She is survived by their three children: Betty (Lyman) Dellinger, Diane Thompson, and Aaron (Debbie) Leggett; six grandchildren: Amy (Nate) Wanner, Adam (Diana) Dellinger, Bryce (Frances) Thompson, Chris Leggett, Sara Leggett, and Jason Leggett; and four great-grandchildren: Eli (Jenna) Wanner, Mahala Wanner, Cordelia Wanner, and Esme Wanner.
Her legacy of love, creativity, and quiet strength lives on through her family and all who were blessed to know her.
Private services for the family will be held. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the hospice team for the compassionate care and support they provided to Doris.
