Jason David (J.D.) Love, age 88, entered into eternal rest August 3, 2025 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, with wife, family members, and friends at his side.
He was born May 30, 1937, in Ringgold, Louisiana, son of the late Jerry Love Sr. and Katherine Mingo Love. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1958. He lettered in football and was a tenacious boxer. He won the heavy weight division of the Joplin Golden Gloves in 1957. He became a professional boxer located out of Kansas City, Missouri under the handle of J.D. (Stormy) Love. According to Fightstat.com his professional record was 7-2-0-0 (KO-5).
He loved and missed Joplin so much when a representative of Joplin Junior College contacted him to offer him a football scholarship he accepted and returned to his beloved Joplin.
He was employed as a police officer for 28 years retiring in 1995. After a well-earned vacation, he joined the security department of St. John's/Mercy Hospital for 16 years. During his 'retirement' he also served as Jasper County Coroner, a school crossing guard and on the Joplin Street Commission. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2410 and the Fraternal Order of Police.
J.D. Was preceded in death by two wives, Barbara Samuels Love and Ruby Carroll Love. He also grieved the loss of one daughter, Rebecca Carroll, and his siblings, Vera Jenkins, Jerry (J.L.) Love Jr., James Love, Betty Robinson-Gray and her twin Bobby Joe Love. He also greatly mourned the loss of his sister, Helen Ruth Derrick and brother, Raymond Love.
He is survived by many family, friends and loved ones including his wife, Joyce Hogan, children, Jennifer Hogan Stamps (Floyd), Kendace Hogan Culbreth, Kenneth Hogan (Chiho), Tonya Robinson, and Michael Carroll. Grandchildren, Malayah Zellner (Alisha), Felicia Robinson, Tyauna Sharae Robinson, Ruby Nwabugwu, Candace Carroll, great-grandchildren, Keandre Robinson, Kaleo Bryant, DaJohnna Porter, Kiara Patton, Kiran Patton and KaMika Carroll. His brother, Robert Love, sister-in-law, Margaret Elaine Love, brother-in-law, MacArthur Derrick, and a multitude of extended family.
Services for J.D. will be held August 14, 2025, 10 AM at the First Baptist Church, 4128 Connecticut Avenue, Joplin, Missouri.
