Dorothy Leonard

(From Parker Mortuary)

Dorothy Leonard, a beacon of kindness and joy, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025, at the age of 101 in Joplin, MO. Born on October 28, 1924, in Oologah, OK, Dorothy's life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and service, woven with the threads of her unwavering dedication to her family and community.

Dorothy was the cherished daughter of the late Ben Brown and Sarah "Tate" Brown. Her vibrant spirit and warm heart were a comfort to all who knew her. Dorothy's legacy is carried on by her loving family: her son, Ron Leonard, and his wife Mae Ann of Sand Springs, OK; her daughters, Sue Hance of Carl Junction, MO, and Ginger Bremer, along with her husband Mike of Skiatook, OK. She was a beloved sister to Dollie Hall of Neosho, MO, and Billie Garrett of Joplin, MO.

Dorothy's joy was multiplied through her nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense happiness and pride to her life. Dorothy united in marriage with her husband Jim Leonard on July 27, 1957. They shared over 45 years everyday together before he proceeded her in death on July 19, 2002.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Kennedy and her son in laws, Jim Kennedy and Bob Hance of Carl Junction, MO.

In her professional journey, Dorothy's work ethic and charismatic personality shone brightly. She began her career as an elevator operator, a role in which her daily interactions with people laid the groundwork for a lifetime of community involvement. Later, she became the manager of a local insurance agency, where her leadership and organizational skills were highly valued. Dorothy's entrepreneurial spirit led her to own and operate Lakemont Shores Cafe, where she not only managed the business but also delighted customers as a cook and waitress.

After moving back to the Joplin area, Dorothy broke new ground as the second female school bus driver for both the Carl Junction and Joplin school systems. Her dedication to the safety and well-being of the children she transported each day was emblematic of her nurturing nature.

Dorothy's interests were centered around the simple pleasures of life. She found great joy in spending her free time with friends and family, cherishing every moment and creating memories that would last for generations. Her presence was a source of comfort and laughter, and she was often described as the heart of every gathering.

Dorothy's impact on her community and the lives she touched will be remembered fondly. Her laughter, her wisdom, and her unwavering kindness have left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were privileged to know her. As we bid farewell to Dorothy Leonard, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love, laughter, and selfless service. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, and her memory will be treasured forever.

Family and friends will gather for graveside services at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at the Osborne Cemetery with Pastor Lenny Martin officiating.
