Sylvia Kay Hensley, age 68, of Joplin, passed away on Saturday September 5, 2015, at Mercy Hospital, following a sudden illness.
Sylvia was born on May 15, 1947, the daughter of the late Arnold and Madeline (Larsen) Vik. She has been an area resident most of her life. She married Joe Hensley and together they had two children. She graduated from MSSU with a BS in Education. Later she received her Master's in Education from Pittsburg State University. She taught school for thirty-three years for Webb City R-7 School District, influencing lives of fourth and fifth graders, retiring in 2002. After retirement she continued with Webb City Schools as a substitute teacher. She enjoyed going to the lake and spending time with her family and friends. Sylvia had a fun loving spirit, she never knew a stranger and was always a blast to be with. Sylvia the Queen Matriarch will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by one son, Jake Hensley and wife Rebecca, Carl Junction, Mo.; one daughter Leslie Hensley, Tavernier, Fl.; two grandchildren, Sophia and Owen, Carl Junction, Mo.; and loved ones Dave Morton and Joe Hensley.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Larry Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
As an educator Sylvia wanted to ensure the continued education of her grandchildren. A Scholarship Fund has been established at US Bank of Joplin in care of the mortuary.
