Jewell A. Mitchell, 94, went to his heavenly home on October 2, 2016, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
He was born on June 27, 1922 in Evening Shade, Arkansas to Elmer and Edna Mitchell, he had four brothers, Archie, Wesley, Elson and Coy.
He left home in his late teens to work at the Civilian Conservation Corps in Idaho. He then served in Army Air Corps and the U.S. Army during WWII in Patton’s Third Army in Germany and France.
Mr. Mitchell graduated from Walnut Ridge, Arkansas High School.
He married Pearl Sluder Feb 10th, 1945, and after he returned from the war the two made their home and raised their family in Walnut Ridge. After Pearl’s death, Mr. Mitchell moved to Joplin to be close to his daughter and family.
Mr. Mitchell was the owner and operator of Mitchell’s Gulf Service Station and a U-Haul Distributor in Walnut Ridge for over three decades.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Walnut Ridge for over 50 years and served as Deacon.
He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and was always willing to help those needing transportation to Doctor’s appointments. Mr. Mitchell enjoyed fishing and gardening.
He is survived by daughter Sandra (Mitchell) Snodgrass and husband Jim Snodgrass of Joplin, grandson Ron (Spence) Spencer and wife Kristi of Carl Junction, Jeff Snodgrass and wife Kodie of Webb City, and Jason Snodgrass and wife Valerie of Carthage, along with five great-grandchildren, Logan, Makayla, Shelby, Makenzie and Jack. His brother, Coy and wife Vernell of Hoxie Arkansas also survive.
Mr. Mitchell will be remembered as a loyal and loving husband, father and grandfather. He lived his life according to his faith, showing care and compassion for others.
He was preceded in death by his wife Pearl (Sluder) Mitchell who died on November 9th, 2011 and a son Jewell A. (Mitch) Mitchell Jr. who passed away at the age of 12 on June 8th, 1969 and his three brothers Archie, Wesley and Elson.
Bob MaGee will officiate funeral services at Bryan Funeral Home in Hoxie, Arkansas on Saturday, October 8th, at 1 p.m. Mr. Mitchell will be buried at Lawrence Memorial Park in Walnut Ridge. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home Friday, October 7th at 6 p.m.
