David Shallenburger

David Neal Shallenburger, age 66 of Galena, passed away at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, MO at 5:18 PM on Monday, November 14, 2016.

David was born in Galena on May 26, 1950 to the union of Harry L. Shallenburger and Margie Ardeth (Overstreet) Shallenburger. He graduated from Galena High School with the Class of 1968.

Dave spend the majority of his working life as a factory worker at Lozier, retiring from there in 2004. He then began working for the Galena Unified School System in the Rural 10 Program, as a crossing guard, and helped as an assistant coach with countless sports teams until his health prevented him from working in early 2016. He was a member of the Baxter Springs Apostolic Faith Church. His hobbies were a big part of his life. He was a charter member of Don’s Pinochle Emporium, and an avid golfer. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Dave married the Carolyn Vanderpool in Galena on November 1, 1968. Together they had two children, Jerry and Bryan Todd. She preceded him in death on December 10, 1977. He later married Cheryl Kitch in Miami, OK on June 20, 1980. She preceded him in death on July 29, 2003. Surviving is his wife Valerie ”Val” (Carter) Shallenburger, who he married in Baxter Springs, KS on September 4, 2004.

Also surviving are David’s two sons, Jerry David Shallenburger of the home, and Bryan Todd Shallenburger of Carl Junction; three brothers, Fred Shallenburger (wife, Betty) of Riverton, Jack Shallenburger of Booneville, MO, and Harold Shallenburger of Galena; as well as 3 grandchildren, Lakyn, Laurel, and Luke.
He was preceded in death by two wives, Carolyn and Cheryl; his parents, Harry and Margie; and one brother, Harry Lee Shallenburger.

Mr. Shallenburger has been entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home for cremation. A memorial service has been scheduled for Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Galena USD 499 Performing Arts Center. Pastor Bill Waggoner will officiate. Private family burial of cremains will take place at a later time at Oak Hill Cemetery.
