Roy A. Slates, 63, Nevada, passed away on Saturday, May 20, at Barton County Memorial Hospital in Lamar. Roy was born March 19, 1954, in Carthage, to Glen “Gilbert” and Wilma G. (Dickerson) Slates. After Glen’s tragic death in 1956, Wilma married Gene Lathrop who became the loving father to Roy and his siblings.
Roy grew up in Sheldon and graduated from Sheldon High School with the Class of 1972. Roy owned and operated Slates Construction for many years. He later entered into business with his son, Reed, and worked for several years in North Dakota before retiring in 2015. He had a love for motorcycles and fast boats. Roy also enjoyed telling jokes and making people laugh, but he especially loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Survivors include one son Reed Slates and Lindy, and his son Xavier, Nevada; one daughter, Jill Spencer and her husband, Travis, and their son Nolan, Edna, Kan.; two sisters, Glenna Reaves and her husband, Jerry, Sheldon, and Carla Jett and her husband, Dennis, Sheldon. Roy is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and his many friends.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 26, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Richard Carpenter officiating. A committal service will follow in the Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home.
