Herschel Jerry "Bill" Salchow, age 89, Carl Junction, Missouri, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017 at the home of his good friend, Jerry Hoffman, in Oronogo after a lengthy illness.
Bill was born May 29, 1928 in Billings, Missouri, son of the late Bill Salchow and Clara Hutter Salchow. "Pee Wee" attended school in Billings, graduated from Billings High School in 1946. He was encouraged to join the United States Army in December of 1950, and he served in Okinawa with the 467th Aviation as a mechanic. He returned to Missouri and worked for MFA Creamery in Springfield, and then moved to the Joplin area where he worked for 31 years as a mechanic for Ozark Airlines. He was a member of Forest Park Baptist Church, and was known in the Carl Junction area where he rode his bike everywhere. "Pops" told his good friend Jerry that his day wasn't complete unless he was able to "pick on someone".
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brothers, Burton, Clarence, Jim, and Raymond Salchow; a sister, Lorene Kuhns; and a son, Gregory Salchow.
Survivors include his children, Mark Salchow and wife Laura of Joplin, and Kim Fryer and husband John of Carl Junction, Missouri; grandchildren, Ellen Salchow, Chelsea Mertens, Adysen Mertens, Adam Mertens, his twin sister, Lucille Page, of Rogersville, Missouri; several nieces and nephews, and his good friend and caregiver over the last several years, Jerry Hoffman of Carl Junction.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. in Smart Cemetery, Billings, Missouri.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
