Vera L. Mathis, 84, Carthage, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO. Vera Lucille Ritchie was born December 25, 1932 in Carthage, a daughter of the late Earl K. Ritchie and Maudie Thorn Ritchie. She attended Carthage Public Schools and for many years worked for Bob & Faye’s Café, Carthage.
Vera is survived by one sister, MaryBelle Phillips, Parsons, KS; eight children; Dennis (Tina) Mathis, Neosho, MO, Rick Mathis, Diamond, MO, Sharon (Roger) Bastings, Carthage, Rocky (Angela) Mathis, Joplin, Charlotte (Tony) Sargent, Neck City, MO, Beth (Tom) Pendergraft, Wheaton, MO, Donna Mathis, Joplin and Johnna Smith, Reeds, MO; twenty grandchildren, several great and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Rowe and Ruby Pruitt, two brothers, Max and Donald Mathis.
Visitation will be held 2:00 – 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 26, 2017 at Knell Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 27, 2017 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Tom Pendergraft will officiate. Interment will follow at Park Cemetery. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Order of the Purple Heart in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W. Chestnut, Carthage, MO 64836.
