Robert E. 'Bob' Smith, age 91, Joplin, passed away at 12:08 p.m. Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Mercy Hospital.
Bob was born August 19, 1926 in Joplin. He was a lifetime Joplin resident.
Bob was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1944-1946. He worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone for thirty eight years, retiring in 1986.
Bob was a talented golfer. He was a two time Ozark Amateur winner; Twin Hills Invitational Champion in 1960; Briarbrook Invitational Champion; four time winner of the Joplin City Championships; record holder of eight under par score of 27 at Schifferdecker Golf Course; had nine consecutive under par scores of 62 at Schifferdecker Golf Course and was selected to the Joplin Golf Hall of Fame. In between rounds of golf, Bob also found time to own and operate a successful golf cart business.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine, on May 9, 1992.
He is survived by his daughter, Melinda, of Joplin.
Graveside services are planned for Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Jeff D. Martin will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
