(From Fohn Funeral Home)John L. Starchman, age 73, of Cassville, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at Mercy Hospital in Rogers, Arkansas.
John was born on November 7, 1947 in Joplin, Missouri to John V. and Charlotte (Cox) Starchman.
He graduated from Joplin High School in 1965, attended Missouri Southern State University, and was united in marriage to Judie Ardrey of Webb City, Missouri, on June 19, 1970.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Judie; John’s mother, Charlotte Starchman of Joplin, MO; son John Starchman (Jennifer Tharp and daughter Iliana) of Carl Junction, MO; daughter Janelle Hurn (Ryan); granddaughters Alannah Rose Hurn and Alyssa Jo Hurn of Springfield, MO; brothers Paul Starchman and David Starchman (Ruth), all of Joplin. John was preceded in death by his father, John V. Starchman, and son Joseph Ross Starchman.
When his country called, John answered; he served in the United States Army in Vietnam from February 17, 1970 to October 15, 1971. Upon returning to his new wife and the country he loved, he began his professional career, starting in the food service industry. Throughout this time he moved up into management positions, allowing him to work at some of the most prestigious universities while traveling the country. In 1978 he and Judie moved to Cassville, Missouri, where he established and maintained Starchman Insurance until his death.
John Starchman was definitely a ‘people person’: He was an active member in Cassville United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, and the Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, he was Chairman of the Board of the Barry County Health Department, served on the Flat Creek Special Road District Board, and was the recipient of the Cassville School District Music Advocacy Award. In the holiday months, John would don his red suit, boots, and beard and play Santa Claus around the community. He was an active outdoorsman whose favorite pastimes included fishing, canoeing, target shooting, golfing, and biking. John kept his humility throughout his life, but he did relish his status in the community as a virtuoso of the kazoo.
John Starchman was a godly man; he led by example and professed his faith every day by giving, helping, and serving others. While he walks with the Lord and son Joe now, the lessons he leaves behind are numerous. John was exceptionally proud of his body of work in his community, but he felt his greatest achievements were his children and grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, January 2nd, 2021 from 12:00 P.M to 5:00 P.M., with Masonic Rites at 4:00 P.M., at Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville. The family will hold a private service and announce a celebration of life for the community at a later date.
