Don Phelps

Donnie Ray Phelps Sr. of Joplin, Missouri passed from this life on April 10, 2021 at his daughter’s home in Baxter Springs, Kansas, he was 78.

Don was born in September 29, 1942 in Quinter, Kansas to Cecil B. and Edith (Miley) Phelps. Don graduated from Quinter High School with the class 1961. He graduated from Trade School for electric. 

He lived in the area since 1971 moving from Emporia, Kansas to start Baxter Appliance and Electric. He also, held Radio Shack franchise name from 1971-1983. He held an Amateur Radio License with the call sign of KØZLC. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Joplin, Missouri. Don was a golf fanatic and enjoyed smoking ham, fishing and collecting coins. 








He married Muriel Wood-Phelps on January 20, 1980 in Miami, Oklahoma, she survives of the home.

Don is also survived by one son Don Phelps Jr. and wife (Joy) of Tonkawa, Oklahoma, one step son James Wood and wife Cordelia of Coco Beach, Florida, two daughters Tamera Wellner and husband Carl of Girard, Kansas, Lisa Black and husband Jack of Baxter Springs, Kansas, two step daughters Theresa Page-Bohannan and husband Jerry of Grove, Oklahoma, Deborah Wood of Joplin, Missouri, one brother Maurice Phelps of Colby, Kansas, one sister Shirley Bohl and husband Julius of Hudson, Florida. Don is also survived by grandchildren Kyle Wellner, Barbara Corchan-Wellner, Stevie Owen, Tyler Phelps, Tanner Phelps, Kristi Phelps, Leslie Phelps, Tad Phelps, Tegan Anderson, Miranda Stephens, Lindsay Page, Jared Page, Josh Page.

Don is preceded in death by a brother Wrex Phelps and James Phelps and also a sister Kay Phelps.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 4:00 - 6:00pm Friday April 16, 2021 at the Elks Lodge in Joplin, Missouri. Don’s family has entrusted Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Online Condolences can be made at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
