David Weems

David B. Weems, Neosho, entered into rest on May 6, 2021 in the comfort of his home, following declining health at the age of 98. David was born November 9, 1922 in Granby, Missouri, the only son of Eula B. and Fannie (Clark) Weems. He was raised in Newtonia and graduated from Midway High School. 

Following graduation, he attended Iberia Jr. College and Drury College. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Europe and California before his honorable discharge in 1946. 

While in California, he completed his education at UCLA and met the love of his life, Charys. David and Charys (Ford) were married on March 19, 1949 in Santa Barbara, California and in 1957 relocated back to Newtonia. David was an educator and taught high school science, chemistry, and physics, retiring in 1969. He then began his second career of freelance writing. 

David was active in the historical preservation of Newtonia and especially of the Newtonia Battlefields Protection Association. He enjoyed bicycling, photography, reading, sharing stories and had a gentle, kind spirit. He was a member of the Neosho United Methodist Church. 

David is preceded in death by his wife, Charys, whom he had a very deep and special love for as well as his parents and two sisters, Dottie and Nina. 

He is survived by a daughter, Helen Weems of Columbia, Maryland; beloved cousins, Julia Sellenraad, Martha Curry and Joy Walker and numerous friends. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 10, 2021 at the Neosho United Methodist Church, Pastor Mitch Jarvis will officiate. Interment and full military honors will follow in the Newtonia IOOF Cemetery and serving as pallbearers will be Larry James, Tom Higdon, Jack Andris, Russell Hively, Don Jessen and Eddie McAllister; honorary pallbearer will be Russell Walker. 

The family will receive friends at a time of visitation prior to the service from 9:30 am until service time at the church.
