Garry Peters

(From Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary)

Garry Peters, 71, of Joplin, went home to the comfort of the Lord, leaving earthly pain behind on September 17th, 2021.

Born April 26th, 1950 to Harold Lee Peters and Edith Mae Greenlee Peters. Garry lived all his life in the Joplin, Mo area. He graduated from Joplin High School and attended Missouri Southern in Joplin.

Garry worked for Thriftway IGA, Consumers Markets, Smitty’s Market, Albertson’s and then for Walmart Super Center in Webb City for 15 years, semi-retiring in 2012 and retiring in 2014.

Garry started as a bag boy, became a stockman and checker, moving to produce manager, then to the Frozen Department and manager of Dairy where he won an award for his skill of handling that department. He also received awards at Walmart for his prowess in product sales and for skill in promoting the dairy foods. He could order grocery, frozen and dairy products like no other.

Garry loved sports—both playing as a child growing up and working with youth in baseball (umpire), basketball (coach) and soccer, where he coached for recreation & competition teams. He was a superior official for recreational, high school and college programs. He also enjoyed bowling. Fishing was Garry’s favorite pastime, especially with his grandchildren.
Garry loved a good joke, whether in the telling, pulling pranks on coworkers and family, or planning gag gifts for family and friends at Christmas, a tradition started by his father. His therapists were also targets of his humor. Garry also enjoyed telling how his dogs pulled pranks of their own on him.

November 27, 1968 Garry married his high school sweetheart, Geneva Owens. He never forgot a birthday, anniversary or any special occasion. Together they had three children: Collisha Rauch, Aaron (Jami) Peters, Cory Anson Peters (deceased). Garry thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren, Leevi Rauch, Keagan (Lauren) Peters, Jensyn Rauch, Kailan Peters, and Allisyn Rauch. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his beloved dog. Both parents preceded him in death as well as a half brother, Leroy.
Garry loved animals and protecting them. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Joplin Humane Society in care of Thornhill Dillon Mortuary.

Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 21, 2021, in the Chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin with Layne Rolofson officiating. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Darrell Peters, Keagan Peters, Leevi Rauch, John Alley, Tyrone Jones, Dave Warden, Darrell Waggoner and Jeff Bennett with Aaron Peters, Randy Hood, Mike Landis, Jim Dick, Jeremy McMullen, Justin McMullen, Jim Greenlee and Gary Lankford serving as honorary.
