Gary Checkley

Gary R. Checkley, age 47, Joplin, passed away on Friday December 10, 2021 at his home.

Gary was born September 17, 1974 in Carthage, Missouri, and graduated from Joplin High School in 1993. 

He worked for Farmers Chemical which became P.C.S. Pot Ash for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2018 as the Plant Operations Supervisor. 








He then went to work for the City of Neosho as the Golf Pro and Pro Shop Manager taking care of the Neosho Municipal Golf Course. He loved playing golf, and the friends he made throughout the years golfing. He was also an avid enthusiast of rock music and loved playing his guitars for family and friends. Gary was also known as a skilled and talented woodworker.

Gary completed his Certified Rescue Training, and worked for the Emergency Response Team after the Joplin Tornado in 2011. He was a member of the ERT that was the first high angle rescue team allowed into St. John’s Hospital to search and rescue after the tornado.

Gary is survived by his wife, Glenna “Tess” (Ratrie) Checkley; sons, Tay Cable and Ty Cable both of Joplin; parents, Kenneth and Patricia Knack of Sarcoxie, Missouri; brothers, Loren Checkley (Jamie) of Joplin, Bobby Lawrence and wife Ann of Weeping Water, NE; sister, Pam Devins (Trevor) of Sarcoxie; nephews, T.J. Devins (Hannah) of Diamond, Derrick Devins of Sarcoxie, nieces, Mystic Checkley, Patience Checkley, Jasmine Checkley, and Cole Checkley all of Joplin.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor David Moore officiating.

Interment will follow in Reeds Cemetery, Reeds, Missouri with Bobby Lawrence, Richard Clemmons, Mason Ray, Derrick Oslob, John Stephen, Bill Lake, Will Brown, Aaron Bard, Time Oinstat, and Rob Cole serving as pallbearers

The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
