Don Miller

Ray Donald “Don” Miller, Jr., passed away on February 6, 2024, in his hometown of Joplin, Missouri. He was born on November 20, 1934, to the late Ray Donald Miller, Sr. and Ruth Katherine Davis Miller. Don's life was a testament of his love for his family, dedication to his community and his passion for life.

Don was a man of integrity and intelligence, graduating from the University of Missouri Columbia with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting. He was active in the Student Union Board as well as a leader in student activities as an R.A. for the dorm he resided in for four years. 

His professional journey was marked by his role as the Executive Vice President of First National Bank, later known as U.S. Bank, and as President at Community National Bank. Don's legacy in the banking sector of Southwest Missouri was paralleled by his commitment to advocacy for the developmentally disabled. His tireless efforts for the disabled community led to significant state of Missouri legislative advancements, the establishment of educational resources like Joplin’s College View State School and services and employment opportunities for adults and their families at the Jasper County Sheltered Facilities.

Don was a lifelong active member of the First Presbyterian Church and served on many governing committees throughout his adult life. His involvement in the church was just one aspect of his extensive community engagement, which included his participation in civic organizations such as President of the Jasper County Sheltered Facilities Board, The Joplin Sports Authority Board, The YMCA Board of Trustees, The Rotary Club, Kiwanis and Roughnecks.

He was an avid outdoorsman, relishing in fishing and golf, and he held a special place in his heart for the Missouri Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals. His love for float trips and fishing with his family was only matched by his passion for gardening and his love for bird watching at the cabin, especially bald eagles. Even in his later years, Don continued to cherish the time spent with his morning coffee group, sharing Joplin news, events, stories, and laughter.

Don is survived by his children, Melinda Miller Crowe (Larry) of Overland Park, Kansas, Rebecca Miller Gurley (Curtis) of Farmington, New Mexico, Mary Miller Williams of Joplin, MO., and Thomas Gray Miller (Patti) of St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren, Kert Crowe (Scarlett), Nathan Crowe (Katie), Laura Crowe Koch (Shelby), Jackson Gurley (Madison), Davis Gurley (fiancé Lauren), Elizabeth Williams, Riley, Molly, and Madison Miller; great – grandchildren, Whitaker, Alexander, Evelyn, Lake, Barrett, and Charlotte. Don cherished every moment he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents, Don was preceded in death by the love of his life of 72 years, Patricia Gray Miller; son Ray Donald Miller III (Tripp); sister Patricia Miller Righthouse; and great-granddaughter Claire Elizabeth Crowe.

Don's journey may have come to a close, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have been a part of his storied life.

A memorial service is planned for Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Joplin, Mo. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to The First Presbyterian Church of Joplin, Joplin Special Olympics, or a charity of your choice. We extend our gratitude to Compassus Hospice and Palliative Care and Home Instead, for their support and loving care of our wonderful father, Don. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
