(From Parker Mortuary)Michael Lane Yates, a cherished educator, respected attorney, and beloved community member, passed away on November 19, 2024, in Joplin, Missouri. He was born on June 14, 1945, in Cairo, Illinois, to the late Vern and Effie (Lane) Yates.
After graduating from Cairo High School in 1962, Michael pursued his passion for governance and law at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, earning a B.A. in Government in 1966 and an M.S. in Education in 1968. His academic journey continued at the J.D. University of Missouri Columbia School of Law, where he graduated in 1980, laying the foundation for a distinguished legal career.
Michael's professional life was as varied as it was impactful. He began as a Social Science Teacher at Lindbergh High School in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1968 to 1977, where he inspired a generation of students with profound knowledge of the social sciences. His dedication to education persisted as he transitioned into higher education, becoming a Professor of Paralegal Studies and Political Science at Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) from 1980 to 2010, and later serving as an Adjunct Professor at MSSU until 2013, and at Crowder College from 2014 to 2018.
In addition to his teaching roles, Michael was an active member of the legal community. He was a member of the Jasper County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Missouri Bar Association. His expertise in school law was recognized nationally as he served as a Regional Reporter for the "School Law Reporter" with the Education Law Association from 1992 to 2010. His commitment to the legal field extended to his involvement with the Jasper County Jail Visitors Board and his role as a sponsor for the LEX Legal Studies Club and Pre-Law Advisor.
Michael's leadership skills were evident early on as he served as President of Warren Hall and was a proud member of the Delta Chi Fraternity. His love for sports was reflected in his participation as a member of the All-Star Softball Team, and his passion for competition also shone through in his enjoyment of Trivia Pursuit. A lifelong fan, Michael loyally supported the St. Louis Cardinals, the Arizona Cardinals, and SIU Sports. In quieter moments, he found pleasure in the world of audiobooks, immersing himself in stories and knowledge.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Yates, and his long-time friend, Suzanne Becker. He is survived by his stepchildren, Scott Becker and Paul Becker; cousins, Gwendolyn Arthur and Mary Gertrude Barkett. Although he never had kids of his own, he loved being the fun, young- at- heart, Grandpa Mike to 8 grandchildren; Khloe, Jeffrey, Halle, Max, Macy, Roxy, Penelope and Genele.
Michael Lane Yates lived a life of purpose and passion. His contributions to education and the legal profession have left an indelible mark on his community and the many lives he touched. His intellect, integrity, and the warmth of his spirit will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on December 7, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints in Granby, Missouri.
Cremation arrangements are under the direct care of Parker Mortuary.
Randy, thanks for this post. I never would have known that he passed. We worked at MSSU at the same time. We had too many great laughs to count. And as many great conversations
