Jerry West

(From Walnut Lawn Funeral Home)

Jerry J. West, 80, passed away on June 19, 2025, in Springfield, Missouri, with his daughter, Kellie, by his side. He was born on April 17, 1945, in Portsmouth, Ohio, to Leroy and Anna Louise (Smith) West.

Jerry graduated from Piketon High School in Piketon, Ohio, and went on to build a career as a supervisor at the Farmer’s Chemical Coop. He also worked at Peerless International Machine Shop in Joplin, Missouri, and worked for a company that built hospital beds.

Outside of work, Jerry found joy in simple pleasures and shared experiences. He was an avid participant in pool tournaments during the 1980s and 1990s, where he enjoyed both the competition and camaraderie. He also loved playing horseshoes and fishing—activities that brought him peace and connection with others. Above all else, Jerry cherished time spent with family and friends.

He is lovingly remembered by his children: daughters: Kellie Hooker and Sandy Redding; and son, Mitchell West; and his previous wife, Laurie Hammers. He also leaves behind his sisters: Juanita (Tom) Lockard and June Salyers. Jerry had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, being especially close to his grandchildren: Dustin Hooker, Darren Hooker, and Breanna Buell; great-grandsons: Dallas Hooker, Dane Hooker, and Dawson Buell; and great-granddaughter, Dixie Carney. Jerry also leaves many friends and extended family.

Jerry was preceded in passing by his parents Leroy and Anna; brother, Lee West; sister, Esther Stevens; ex-wives: Bonnie West and Louise West; son-in-law, Dawn Hooker; along with many good friends and family members whose memories remain cherished.

Those who knew Jerry remember him as a kind-hearted man—laidback, gentle, giving—and deeply loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His presence will be greatly missed but fondly remembered.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Fairview Cemetery in Joplin, Missouri, with Shane Dodson officiating.

Care has been entrusted to Walnut Lawn Funeral Home, Ltd. – DeGraffenreid-Wood Crematory, Springfield, Missouri.
