Ray Sjorlund

September 3, 1937 - January 10, 2026

Herschel “Ray” Sjorlund departed this life on January 10, 2026. He was born on September 3rd in Wellington, Kansas, the son of Jalmar Louis and Mabel Anna Whitney Sjorlund. He attended schools in Wellington, KS. and graduated from Buffalo KS High School in 1956. He spent several summers and lived full time for five years with an uncle and aunt, Fred and Wilma Whitney, on a farm east of Buffalo, KS.

While attending Neosho County Junior College, he started working at the Foodtown grocery store and continued in the grocery business until 1995. He was a member of the Kansas Army National Guard from February 1959 until February 1965. He attained the rank of Staff Sergent E-6. He managed several Foodtown Stores over the years and also managed Farrier’s Super Store in Grove, OK for over 20 years.








Ray married Lois “Faye” Williams Bailey on December 7, 1973 at Joplin, MO. After both retired from Farrier’s Store in Grove, they moved back to Joplin, MO., where Ray worked for 10 years at Pearl Bros. True Value Hardware Store and also for 5 years at Family Pharmacy as a delivery driver.

Ray is survived by his wife, Faye, of the home, and three sons; Bradley Ray Sjorlund of Girard, Ks. Jason Stuart Sjorlund and wife Paula of Garnett, KS., and Raymond Jason Sjorlund and wife Tina of Joplin, MO. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren; Nathan Haws and wife Tierra, Kristin Sjorlund, Shayla Woods and husband Davy, Kaci Sjorlund and wife Luz, Jese Sjorlund and wife Lauren. Callie Hinderliter and husband Jordan, Malachi Sjorlund and wife Lindsey, and Sydney Lynn Reynolds and husband Tyler. He is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren; Preston, Bentley, Dawson, Theo, Makena, Brayden, Peyton, Hiam, Dilaan, Lennox, Maddox, Reed, Zayden, Saniah, Kayson, Brylin and Braxton.








Additional survivors include sisters, Lou Ann Yarnell of Topeka, KS. and Ruby Griffiths of Derby, KS.

He was preceded in death by both parents and his Uncle and Aunt, his daughter, Peggy Sue Sandlin, and by three sisters, Edna Richards, Dorris Poppel, and Mary Ann Perry, and one brother, Ron Cummins.

Funeral arrangements are being made by Parker Mortuary in Joplin, MO. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2026 and Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel in Joplin, MO. with interment at Emmanual Cemetery, southeast of Carthage, MO on Cedar Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association in care of the mortuary.
