(From Knell Mortuary)Scott Roughton, 67, Carthage, Missouri, a man of unwavering selflessness, humor, and love, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the Solace House, Joplin, Missouri. He was born on November 22, 1958, in San Pedro, California, the son of the late Donald Alvy Roughton and Janice Anne (Phillips) Roughton. Scott's life was a testament to the joy and dedication he brought to his family, his work, and his community.
Scott's journey began as a proud graduate of Parkwood High School in 1976, where the foundation of his lifelong friendships and values were laid. His commitment to service was evident early on and became a central theme in his life. Scott's career as a fireman with the Carthage Fire Department was marked by bravery and dedication, a calling he fulfilled until his well-earned retirement.
Married to his beloved wife, Sue, for 46 years, Scott's love story was one for the ages. Together, they raised a family that became his pride and joy. His children, Jody Roughton (Tysha), and Aspen Claborn (Ryan), were his heart, and his grandchildren, Drake Claborn, Bree Claborn, Hudson Waters, Oakley Waters, Bentley Waters, Ada Roughton, Mitt Roughton, Radyn Roughton, and Dia Roughton, were the lights of his life. Scott's brother, Kevin Roughton, along with many extended family members and friends, will fondly remember his laughter and the warmth he brought to every gathering.
Scott's faith was a cornerstone of his existence. As a long-standing member and elder of Christ's Church of Oronogo, he served his congregation with humility and grace. His commitment to his faith community was further exemplified by the 27 years he and Sue dedicated to running Camp Cyokomo, touching the lives of countless individuals with their generosity and spirit. An avid outdoorsman, Scott found solace and joy in the simplicity of nature.
Whether he was fishing, hunting, or playing a game of softball, he was in his element. But above all, his greatest pleasure came from the time spent with his grandchildren, each moment cherished and filled with laughter.
