Mary Jo Thompson

Mary Jo (Rains) Thompson, age 89, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026 in Arlington, Texas. Born in Meridian, Texas to Walter and Imogene Rains, Mary Jo grew up in New Mexico before the family moved to Missouri, where she graduated from Jasper High School in 1954.

Mary Jo married in 1959 and had 3 children. While married, the family moved around in Missouri, then to Louisiana. Mary Jo returned to Carterville in 1980 and remained until 2017 when she moved to Texas with her daughter. She faithfully attended First Baptist Church in Carterville for many years. Mary Jo worked at Steve’s Lumberyard for several years and retired from McCune-Brooks Hospital in Carthage. She made many meaningful friendships there that endured for years.

Mary Jo loved being around family and friends, enjoying time at Table Rock Lake with her best friend, Dixie Feagans, also playing bridge around the Joplin area. She passed on the love of game play to her children and grandchildren, still winning in Yahtzee every time! Mary Jo will always be remembered for the warm, loving home she provided for her children as well as her quiet disposition, dry humor and quick wit. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.

Mary Jo is survived by sons, Brad (Jennifer) Thompson of Bush, Louisiana; Brian (Laura) Thompson of Zachary, Louisiana; daughter Beth (Bart) Moore of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren Bailey Moore of Arlington, Texas; Brock (Nicole) Moore of Austin, Texas and Morgan Thompson of Zachary, Louisiana; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Howard Ray and Mary Jo McCollough of Tulsa, OK; brother John Rains of Joplin; and nephew Mark Rains of Joplin, Missouri.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.
