Viola Bartlett

(From Parker Mortuary)

Mrs. Viola C. Bartlett, 106, formerly of 2908 S. Pearl, Joplin, MO, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2020, at Joplin Gardens long-term care center.

Mrs. Bartlett is preceded in death by her husband, Lester M. Bartlett; her sister, Mildred M. Block; and her only son, James L. Bartlett.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Kimberly M. Bartlett.

Born December 26, 1913, the daughter of Otto C. and Minnie P. (Ebert) Krumrey, Viola Bartlett grew up in a farmhouse built by her father just outside Charles City, IA. She attended school, first in a one-room schoolhouse just off the family orchard, and later at Charles City High School, until she graduated in 1932.

She was introduced to her husband, Lester M. Bartlett of Des Moines, Iowa, by her uncle. The two were married on February 11, 1936, two days later than expected, after Lester was caught in a snowstorm on the way to the chapel.

After living in Des Moines, IA; Moultrie, GA, and Kansas City, MO, the Bartletts and their young son, James, settled in Joplin in 1951. As well as being a devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Bartlett served in the PTA at Joplin Schools until James graduated from Joplin High School in 1962. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, serving as a Deacon part of that time. She was also a former member of Temple Chapter 95, Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Bartlett was fortunate to have traveled the world, visiting over 26 foreign countries with her husband, before his death after 65 years of marriage. She was an avid reader and bridge player who enjoyed completing word finds. She made scrumptious pies and cookies, and was a lover of chocolate - “all kinds.”

Mrs. Bartlett’s viewing will be held at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary at 602 S. Byers, Joplin, on Monday, February 10, 2020, from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. A memorial service will be held in Mrs. Bartlett’s honor on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at 4:00 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel, 509 S. Pearl, Joplin, officiated by Parker Mortuary.

A graveside service for family will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Charles, City, IA.
