(From Parker Mortuary)Judith Ann (Holden) Dixon, age 77, formerly of Joplin, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2020, in McKinney, Texas.
Ms. Dixon was born on October 27, 1942, in Joplin, Missouri, to the late Russell Finley Holden and Norma (Butler) Holden. She attended Joplin schools, graduating from Joplin High School in 1960, one of six first honor students. She received an associate's degree from Joplin Junior College, a bachelor's degree in English/Elementary Education from the University of Tulsa, and a master's degree in Reading from Southwest Missouri State University. She was certified with the state of Missouri to teach gifted children.
Over her lifetime, Ms. Dixon lived in various cities: Tulsa, Oklahoma; Dallas, Texas; Chickasha, Oklahoma; Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and Ada, Oklahoma, before returning to live in Joplin. She moved to her final home in McKinney, Texas, to be near her daughters.
She taught elementary, middle, or junior high school in Garland, Texas; Ada, Oklahoma; Neosho, Missouri; Joplin, Missouri; and Carl Junction, Missouri, retiring from Carl Junction in 2000. She also taught at Missouri Southern State College in Joplin, Missouri. She worked at Honeywell, Inc. in Dallas, Texas, and Public Service Electric Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma. For a time, she was religious education director at First Community Church in Joplin, Missouri. She participated in activities of the Ecumenical Institute/Institute of Cultural Affairs while in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She also taught piano to students for several years.
Ms. Dixon had been a member of the National Education Association, the Gifted Association in Missouri, and Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She was a member of Sweet Adelines International, Show-Me Harmony chorus, Queen City Sound Chorus, and the Rich-Tones. For a time, she served as associate director of the Show-Me Harmony chorus and its bass section leader. She sang in several quartets.
During her lifetime, Ms. Dixon received several awards. She was elected Worthy Advisor of the Joplin Rainbow Girls chapter at age 15. She was the recipient of the DAR Citizenship Award in high school; and in college she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Mortar Board, two honorary scholastic fraternities. She was chosen 'Outstanding Educator' from Neosho by the Southwest Missouri district NEA in 1983.
Ms. Dixon's interests led her to research her family's genealogy. This resulted in her publishing four books -- one for each grandparent's ancestors. She also operated a genealogy website for her family. She enjoyed square dancing and traveling as well.
Ms. Dixon married Denny Guyman Hook in Joplin, Missouri, on June 27, 1964. They had two daughters and later divorced in 1975. She married James Robert Dixon in Neosho, Missouri, on December 19, 1977. They had no children together, and he pre-deceased her.
Survivors include two daughters, Julie Lynn (Hook) Luton and husband, Shan, McKinney, Texas; Dr. Misty Kaye Hook and husband, Greg Adams, McKinney, Texas; a stepson, James Michael Dixon, Carthage, Missouri; one brother, Robert James Holden and wife, Dawn, Springfield, Missouri; six grandchildren, Zachary Luton, Katelynn Luton, Ian Hook-Adams; Chelsea Perrine, Ethan Samuel, and Hannah Dixon; two great grand-children, Oliver Samuel and Brooks Perrine; and several nieces and nephews. A stepdaughter, Robin Dixon Page, pre-deceased her.
Ms. Dixon elected to be cremated. Memorial services are being planned for a later date at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. Memorial contributions may be made to Sweet Adelines International, P.O. Box 470168, Tulsa, Oklahoma, 74147-0168.
