Irmgard was born in Schweinfurt, Germany on October 1, 1940, and moved to Canada with her family during her teenage years where she met the love of her life, Werner. They married in Stratford, Ontario on July 4, 1959, where they lived until they moved to Joplin in 1970. In 2014, Irmgard moved to South Carolina to be with her son Tom and wife, Julie.

Irmgard was a great lover of pets and had many in her lifetime. Her last dog, Bella, was an adopted cocker spaniel that was rescued from the 2011 Joplin Tornado. Irmgard always put her family first. In 2018, she became a grandmother and has enjoyed helping her granddaughter, Avery, grow into a smart, confident and strong girl.

She enjoyed traveling the world to visit family and friends and was always a gracious host at her home to the many visitors she had through the years. Irmgard enjoyed cooking and baking, and always loved nature, gardening and the outdoors. In her later years, she enjoyed peaceful time near the water, whether in the Ozarks at Holiday Island, or at the Carolina coast.

Irmgard is survived additionally by sisters, Erna Renger of Carl Junction, Missouri and Elsa Krapp of Stratford, Ontario Canada.

Irmgard is preceded in death by her two brothers, Michael and Artur Backmund, and her sister, Josephine Morley of Carl Junction.
