Penny Diane Moorehouse-Coates was the fifth child of Andy and Helene Moorehouse. She had four brothers, Bob, Larry, Ron and Donald (“Moose”). She was born and raised in Carthage, Missouri.
Penny learned to play a Hammond organ and played at many social and private functions. She worked at Bob’s Shoe Warehouse until going to Missouri Southern College, majoring in psychology. After graduating from college she got a job at the Joplin Regional Center as a case worker. She worked her way up to the ranks to eventually becoming the director.
Penny met Ed Coates during her last college years. They were together 38 years, 12 of those years they dated then got married. They moved from her home on Olive Street, purchasing their permanent home on Highland Avenue.
Penny retired in 2014, only to become sicker with cancer and suffered tremendously until death. Penny passed peacefully in her sleep October 27, 2016.
Visitation was held Friday, October 28th at the Southwest Missouri Bank community room. Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 29th at the Harvey Cemetery East of Carthage near LaRussell.
