Charles Joseph Fontana, 88, born September 21, 1929 in Monroe, Louisiana passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018 at Springhill Medical Center, Mobile, Alabama.
Mr. Fontana was retired at the age of 70 as a mechanical engineer, retiring from International Paper Company after 35 years of service he continued working for Kellogg Brown and Root and BE and K Engineers.
Mr. Fontana attended Ouachita High School. He played All State Basketball as a Guard. At the age of 16 he played pro baseball with the Yankee Chain. John Hall, KOM League historian, notes that Fontana played for Joplin as a 17-year-old in 1947. During this time he attended Louisiana Tech one semester a year until he achieved a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He was ordained a Deacon in 1994 and served at St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
Mr. Fontana was preceded in death by his son, Gary Fontana; parents, Arnold Edward and Francis Correro Fontana and a sister, Phyllis Grant.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife, Doris McGregor Fontana; children, Kathy Fontana, Cheryl Fontana Harris, Tod Fontana, Carla Fontana, Christi Fontana; Step Sons, Rob Roy Fisher, Russell (Wee-Min) Fisher and Mark (Angela) Fisher; grandchildren, Michael Fontana, Lisa (Michael) Nance, Alexandria Elmore, Isabella Drake, William Drake, Arwen Freemeyer, Stephanie (Stephen) Holyfield, Aaron (Kristina) Wilson and Reese (Brooke) Tidwell; 14 great grandchildren and other family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Marian Center at St, Ignatius Catholic Church, Mobile, Alabama.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Mobile, Alabama
Interment will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens, Mobile, Alabama.
