Wynne Krell

LCDR Leland Wynne Krell, U. S. Coast Guard (Ret.), age 85, Carthage, MO. passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Freeman West Hospital.

Wynne was born February 5, 1936 in San Mateo, California, son of the late Wilbor Leland Krell, Jr. and Marian (birth mother) and Marguerite (adoptive mother). He grew up in California, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Administration and Structural Engineering from the University of California in 1961. 








He continued his education at Pasadena City College, State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California, State University in Los Angeles, Pasadena City College and State Polytechnic University where he studied Surveying and Engineering.

He worked as an engineer, planning a new plant for Planters Peanuts in San Francisco, reconstructing the “Old” Downtown District of the city of Vallejo among other large projects in Oxnard, California. It was during these years he married Laura and fathered, daughter Marian and son Wendell. Wynne was a loving father, and in addition to family life, his passions included barber shop quartet and leadership in scouts and sports coaching for his children.

He continued his career in Pasadena, California, married Geraldine in 1976, and then they moved to Missouri in 1981. They began a new life together, and he began a career in education. He worked at Franklin Technical School in Joplin from 1981 until his retirement on February 27, 1996. He taught students in Mechanical, Civil, and Architecture Engineering as well as Drafting and CAD, both AutoCAD and Matc-CAD. He enjoyed working with the students and was very involved in VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) youth programs. He received several awards for his participation in VICA, and he was very proud of helping students gain skills for success.

Wynne was also very proud of his service in the United States Coast Guard and Reserves where he served for more than 25 years before retiring with the rank of LCDR (Lieutenant Commander). He served as Commanding Officer Coast Guard Reserve Unit (CGRU) in Santa Barbara, California, Executive Officer CGRU in St. Louis, Missouri, and CGRU in Kansas City and president for the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA).

He was professionally associated with the American Public Works Association, American Congress on Surveying and Mapping, California Land Surveyors Association, Reserve Officers Association, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Missouri Vocational Association, and the American Vocational Association.

Wynne is survived by his wife of 45 years, Geraldine “Geri”; daughter, Marian and husband Matt of DeKalb, Texas; son, Wendell and wife Kathyann of Stockton, California; step-daughter, Cheryl of Katonah, New York. Wynne was proud of all five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

No formal services are planned at this time. Burial of his ashes will occur during a family ceremony at Fullerton Cemetery in Carthage, Missouri.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
