(From Bath-Naylor Funeral Home)LTC (Ret) George Edward Powers 85, of Pittsburg, KS met his Lord and Savior Jesus 7:00am Saturday January 17, 2026 at the National Healthcare Rehab Center in Joplin, MO after battling Parkinsons for over 10 years. George was born January 16, 1941 in Sheridan, Wyoming the son of Grover Orville and Ada Mae (Leach) Powers.
George attended school in Helena Montana, where he was inducted as a member of the National Honor Society his senior year and went on to graduate with Master Degree’s from Syracuse and Montana State Universities. George was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving as an Airborne Ranger in Vietnam for 3 tours totaling 30 months.
He retired from military service in 1986 as a lieutenant colonel. March 24th, 1962 he married Patricia Rae and they welcomed 4 children, Tammy, Timothy, Thomas and Travis. On June 1, 1986 George married Susan Kay Paxton at the Living Water Ranch in Olsburg, KS; she survives at the home. Susan’s children Stacea, Jason, Andy and Rachael gained a bonus dad that day and later, the family welcomed Paxton to the family.
After completing his military service, George chose to continue to serve as a pastor at South Broadway Baptist Church for 7 years before establishing Christ’s Community Church where he presided as senior pastor for nearly 28 years. He was a chaplain at the Crawford County Sheriffs Department; chaplain at the PSU Athletic Department and a substitute teacher at USD #250 as well as the original CEO of Caring For Kids of Crawford County.
When not working in service to his community, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, Kansas City Chiefs Football and even published an autobiographical book titled “The Making of a Soldier”. But above all of this, first and foremost, George was a man who loved Jesus out loud and with everything he had which impacted countless lives for the kingdom. This gained him many more honorary sons and daughters and grandchildren than those counted here.
Survivors include his wife; children Tammy Beyer and husband Marlin of Sydney, MT, Tim Powers and wife Carol of Palmyra, VA, Tom Powers and Don of Kansas City, MO, Stacea Kuehn and husband Chad of Pittsburg, KS, Travis Powers of Pittsburg, KS, Jason Head and wife Tonya of Freeport, FL, Rachael Gilmore of Joplin, MO and Paxton Powers of Southern Pines, NC; sister Gloria Jones of Astoria, OR; grandchildren James Beyer, Raechal Beyer, Sarah Diede, John Beyer, Jenny Powers, Robert Powers, Andrew Forrest, Hannah Smith, Micah Kuehn, Melody Kuehn, Noah Kuehn, Hunter Powers, Nick Powers, Judah Powers, Isaiah Powers, Emris Gilmore, River Gilmore, Brenden Gilmore, Adalie Powers, Lydia Powers, Elias Powers, Athena Powers, Philippa Powers and Raphael Powers; 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bruce Powers and son Andy Head.
Funeral Services will be 10:00am Saturday January 24, 2026 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS with Pastor Michael Lazio and Pastor Jeff Spangler officiating. Burial will be a private event at a later date at Highland Cemetery in Iola, KS. Family will receive friends from 6-8:00pm Friday January 23, 2026 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS; friends may call after 12:00pm Friday.
In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to Christ’s Community Church Pittsburg, KS.
