Joe Norris

Joseph Norris, Sr., 81, of Avilla, Missouri, departed this life on Monday, June 10, 2019 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri. Joseph entered this life on June 25, 1937 in Tularosa, New Mexico to the union of the late Thomas “Henry” and Flora Almeda (Turner) Norris. Being the son of a minister meant they moved frequently and ultimately made their move to Missouri.

Eventually Thomas was appointed as the minister of the LaRussell Methodist Church. This is where Joe met Rosine Poncot, the first love of his life and they were united in marriage on December 1, 1957. Together they shared forty-one years until her passing on January 15, 1999.

Joe worked for the Missouri State Highway Department for forty years and was the Highway Barn Supervisor at Avilla for many of those years. He was a Scout Master in Avilla for several years and a member of the Avilla United Methodist Church. 

In 1966, he became a Master Mason and achieved 32 degree in 1975. He was District Deputy Grand Master of the 44th Masonic District in Missouri. Joe was also a Shriner and active in the Knights Templar and the Scottish Rite. 

In 2017, he was very proud to be pinned as a fifty-year Mason. He enjoyed fishing with his kids, photography and the Masonic Lodge.

On December 16, 2000, Joe was united in marriage to Marjorie Hull and they enjoyed many years going to music shows and spending time together.








He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Rosine Norris; brother, Charles Norris and sister, Rachel Walker; Maggie Norris (Joe, Jr’s loving wife); sister-in-law, Dorothy Norris; and step-son, Charles Cornelius.

Joe is survived by his wife Marjorie; his children, Joseph Norris, Jr., Thomas Norris (Kelli) and Kathryn (Norris) Bridges (Scott); grandchildren, Athena (James) Jones, Mark (Amanda) Norris, Greg Norris (Kersy), Sara Caster (Cody) , Macie Rosine Bridges and her boyfriend Tyler Kelley and best friend Casey Gibbons. Great grandchildren, Sharica Jones, Carissa Jones, Dakota Jones and Frankie Margaret Norris. Two brothers, Jesse Norris (Vicki), and Jim Norris; sister-in-law, Shirley Norris; many nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 14, 2019 at Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home in Sarcoxie, Missouri with Pastor Scott Stone officiating. Interment will follow in Harvey Cemetery. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Mark Norris, Greg Norris, Joe Norris, Tom Norris and Scott Bridges. Honorary pallbearers are Jesse Norris and James Norris. Masonic rites will be at 6: 00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with visitation to follow. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Masonic Lodge, Carthage in care of the funeral home.
