Hattie Shumake

Hattie Fern Shumake, age 91, of Columbus, KS passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2019.

Hattie was born March 30, 1928 in Cherokee County, KS to Charles and May (Ware) Larison, the last of 13 children. In 1945 she graduated from Riverton High School.

She was united in marriage to Darrel Shumake October 26, 1946, and had resided in Columbus since. For many years, Hattie worked as a law secretary before retiring in November of 2018. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, and also a member of Business and Professional Women. Among her hobbies, Hattie enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.

Surviving Hattie are her son Darrel Shumake (wife Marylin) of Columbus, two grandchildren: Monica (husband Tim) Huling of Webb City, MO, and Rebeccah L. Stone of Columbus; and five great grandchildren Gage Thompson, Jesse Stone, Ean Stone, Cadence Huling, and Drew Huling.

She was preceded in death by her husband Darrel in 1979, and their infant son Larry Shumake.

Funeral Services are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus, and will be held Friday, September 20, 2019 at 10:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. Rev. Lindsey Clarke will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday at Derfelt Funeral Home from 6:00-7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Methodist Church Food Pantry in care of the funeral home.

  1. My name is Drew Huling, and I am Hattie Shewemakes great
    Grandson. I am also related to Marilyn Shewmake and Darrel Shewmake. And before I leave today and never speak on this website ever again, Hattie was the One of the Greatest Grandmothers I could ever ask for. She used to pick at my freckles and kiss me on the cheek. Its been 5 years sense she has passed and I will miss her forever and ever.
