Evelyn Miller

Evelyn Louise Miller, age 91, Joplin, MO. passed away peacefully, Sunday, February 7, 2021 at her home, surrounded by family.

​ Evelyn was born June 21, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois, daughter of the late Claude S. Mandell and Maybell G. (Kemp) Mandell. She moved to Seligman, Missouri at age 9, and graduated from Seligman High School in 1947. 

 
She married Lawrence I. Miller on February 12, 1949 and followed his military career. While stationed in Germany, they traveled throughout Europe. She often spoke of going to the top of the Eiffel Tower and riding in a gondola in Venice Italy. They were later stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, Ft. Carson, CO, Ft. Riley KS, and the Panama Canal Zone. She worked as a civilian for the US Army during this time. 








She moved to Joplin in 1966 and worked for Dan Stanley Ford, Hulsey Leasing, and later went to work for Freeman Hospital in 1975, retiring in 1991 as Personnel Director.

​ After retirement, she became an avid collector, enjoyed poetry, and spending time with family. Her home was always the gathering place for everyone, especially during the holidays. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and beautiful smile. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

​ In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband in 2013, a son, Steve Miller, whom she always referred to as her “Angel Child” in 2010, brothers Jim and George Mandell.

​ Survivors include her daughter, Judy Heiniger (Bob); son, David Miller both of Joplin; five grandchildren, Christie Anglin, Dustin Miller, Desiree Miller, Jennifer Miller Boatwright (David), Janella Miller; 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Alford of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and many nieces and nephews.

​ Funeral service will be Friday, February 19, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Dr. John Swadley officiating. Interment will follow in Osborne Memorial Cemetery.

​ The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Thursday, February 18, 2021 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

​ The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the dedicated staff of Compassus Hospice, Home Instead and a special thank you to her Oncologist, Dr. Anisa Hassan, for 17 years of excellent care.
