Dwaine Schilling

(From Greenfield Funeral Chapel)

Dwaine H. Schilling, a lifetime farmer, passed away on December 13, 2023.

Born on September 9, 1934, to Alice (Boehne) and August Schilling, Dwaine grew up outside of Meinert, Missouri, with his parents and sister, Carolyn. The family attended Zion Lutheran Church in Meinert, and Dwaine attended the one-room school there from first grade through eighth grade.

From a very early age, Dwaine helped his dad on the farm, and he graduated from Lockwood High School in 1952.

A major drought in the early 1950s caused hardship to the farming industry, and Dwaine went to Kansas City to make a living. Before long, he was back on the farm and bought his first tractor, a ’33 Massey Harris. In December 1956, he married Linda Lee Wilson at Zion. In 1957, the U.S. Army drafted Dwaine, where he served at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas.

While living in Texas, Dwaine and Linda welcomed their first child, Valerie. The family returned to Missouri in 1959 and later welcomed David and Darren. Dwaine and Linda raised their children in the Lutheran faith, attending Zion and in 1969 joining Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lockwood. A proud moment for Dwaine came in 1976 when his family received the Dade County Farm Family Award at the Missouri State Fair.

Dwaine farmed for over 75 years, growing his operation of row crops, hay, and beef cattle, with the help of his family.

While Dwaine and Linda divorced in 1994, they both remained steadfast and devoted grandparents to Andrew, Jason, Jarica, and Brooke, celebrating treasured birthdays, holidays, confirmations, and graduations throughout the years. Dwaine enjoyed taking his grandsons to the Four-State Farm Show, farm equipment auctions, and cattle auctions. He would give his daughter and his granddaughters the most beautiful birthday cards, which they still hold dear.

In 2016, Dwaine became a proud great grandpa to Chase Emory. He enjoyed watching Chase grow as the family joined together at Cooky’s, Chicken Annie’s, and other restaurants in the Four State area. His pride and his legacy grew even larger in the past year with the welcoming of three more great-grandchildren, Remi Dallas, River Emerald, and August Troy.

Dwaine is survived by his three children, Valerie (Schilling) Hudspeth, David Schilling, and Darren Schilling (Doug); four grandchildren, Andrew Hudspeth, Jason Hudspeth (Henry), Jarica Oeltjen (Phil), and Brooke Schafer (Ryan); four great-grandchildren, Chase, Remi, River, and August; a sister, Carolyn Arnold; two nephews, Craig Arnold (Shelly) and Kurt Arnold; and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Alice; his son-in-law, Troy Hudspeth; and his brother-in-law, Richard Arnold.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Services are under the care of the Lockwood Funeral Chapel.
