Gary Carter

Gary J. Carter, 76 of rural Pittsburg, KS died Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at the Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg. 

He was born December 5, 1943 in Council Bluffs, IA the son of Levi Lindon and Ruby Mable (Fulps) Carter. 

On August 14, 1965 he was united in marriage to Dixie Lee Clark, and she preceded him in death on November 26, 2014. 

Gary was the Pastor of the Church of God in Mindenmines for 53 years; he also was a Motor Carrier Inspector for the Kansas Highway Patrol and a rural mail carrier for the US Postal Service. 

Survivors include a son Charles Carter of Frontenac, three daughters: Christie Carter of Frontenac, Lisha Maples of Frontenac and Jolee Hagerman of Bronaugh, MO; six grandchildren: Garrick Maples, Troy Maples, Nicole Hagerman, George Hagerman, Jessica Carter and Levi Carter and two great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 3:00pm Saturday, September 12, 2020 at the Church of God in Mindenmines, MO with Rev. Bill Rawson officiating. The Family will receive friends at the Church on Friday evening from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. Burial will be at a later date in the Oakton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Church of God; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home or church.

Judy Nichols

Judy Sue Nichols, age 71, of Lamar, Missouri passed away August 30, 2020, at her home after a long illness.

Judy was born November 17, 1948 in Kansas City, Missouri to Louis Willard and Ella Marie (Mitts) Logston. 

Judy was a high school graduate, a homemaker and a mother of four children. 

Survivors include two sons, Louis Sinnett, Lamar, Missouri and Nicholas Nichols, Lamar, Missouri; two daughters, Tammy Shutters, Lamar, Missouri and Nichole Jeffries, Nevada, Missouri; ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Preceding Judy in death were her parents, a brother, Louis Lee Logston, and a sister, Jo Ann Biles.

A private family graveside service is scheduled in Welborn Cemetery, Moundville, Missouri.

Elsia Patrick

Mrs. Elsia Louise (Fenton) Patrick, 87, of Reeds, Missouri, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2020 at St. Luke’s Nursing Center in Carthage, Missouri.

Elsia was born in Muncie, Kansas to Fred Daniel and Ivy Edna (Richey) Fenton on March 8, 1933. Elsia worked several years for Fox Deluxe Frozen Foods as well as a housekeeper for various families. She was united in marriage to Raymond Edward Patrick on November 6, 1982 in LaRussell, Missouri. Together they shared twenty-six until his passing on February 23, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers and three sisters. 

Elsia is survived by her sons, Russell Fenton, and wife, Mary Jean, of Reeds, Missouri and Cliff Eugene Walker and wife, Susan, of Joplin, Missouri; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Patrick are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home with James Poe officiating. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Tracy Boggs, Jeremy Pippin, Danny Pippin, Bob Maggard, Jack Maggard and Greg Patrick. Interment will follow in Taylor Cemetery. Bob Douglas

Robert “Bob” Clayton Douglas, Sr., age 82, of Seligman, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Bob was born on July 15, 1938, in Jackson, Mississippi, to Clayton Dale Douglas and Mae (Douglas) Tilford. 

He lived in Savannah, Georgia, until the age of twelve when the family moved to Seligman and made their home for seventy years. Bob was a 1956 Southwest High School graduate and subsequently went to work for Webb Propane. He worked there for forty-three years where many friendships were made; he had seen many changes during that time, including the changing of the name to Empire Gas. 

Bob’s family is very proud of all his accomplishments during his time with the gas company. He retired from the Seligman branch as Manager in 2003 and which time that branch was closed; Bob was the longest employee Empire Gas had ever had. 

On November 19, 1970, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Skelton in Oklahoma; she preceded him in death on February 11, 2017. Together they built a wonderful life together, along with their seven children. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who always put others first. Bob’s children meant the world to him and they all knew he would always have their back. He was such a loving man with a big heart who left a lasting impression on so many lives and will be forever missed.

Bob enjoyed playing his guitar in his younger years and loved to tell stories of all the great people he met while working for Empire Gas; his stories would make you laugh so hard and make you wish that time back then was like that now. Bob loved his wife, kids, and grandkids all dearly. If you asked the kids though, they would say they came second to his beloved dogs over the years- his “Chachi” and “Booger Bear” were very especially important to him.

Survivors include one son, Danny Smith and his wife Melissa, of Seligman; five daughters, Shirley Ramsey and her husband Don, of Seligman, Sharon Tate and her husband Buddy, of Seligman, Bobbi Vanzandt and her husband Kenny, of Seligman, Cindy Smith, of Jane, and Jane Ann Haggard Douglas, of Seligman; fifteen grandchildren, Rick, Clay, Amanda, Christopher, Ryan, Brandy, Laci, Geannie, Lana, Dakota, Blake, Drake, Shelby, Randall, Robert Clayton “RD”; twenty great-grandchildren; and his significant other, Barbara Webb, of Seligman.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Bob was preceded in death by his son, Robert Clayton Douglas, II; one grandson, Christopher Alan Arnett; and one sister, Ann Douglas.

A Celebration of Life for both Bob and Mary Jane will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2020, at the home of Bob and Mary Jane Douglas for family and friends to come and share their memories of Bob and May Jane.

Patricia Jean “Pat” Lamb, 89, of Joplin, passed away Monday, August 24, 2020, at Communities of Wildwood in Joplin. Patricia was born August 10, 1931, in Calhan, Colorado, to the union of the late Frank and Doris (Tyler) Kanuch. She was a 1950 graduate of Sherman County High School.

Robert Lewis “Bob” Lamb, 88, of Joplin, passed away Friday, August 28, 2020, at Communities of Wildwood in Joplin. Bob was born March 29, 1932, in Goodland, Kansas, to the union of the late Perl and Josephine (Cullin) Lamb. He was a 1950 graduate of Sherman County High School where he served as Class President. Bob was also a member of National Honor Society and played football and basketball for state wins. He was proudly active in Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

On September 6, 1953, Bob and Pat were united in marriage in Wheatridge, Colorado, and together they had two children, Nancy and David. 

Bob continued his education at Kansas University and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1955. He was also honored with a Professional Degree of Management in Engineering from the University of Missouri – Rolla. During his collegiate career, Bob was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Tau and Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society.

Pat worked as a dedicated homemaker and served her community in many capacities, including Past President of LWMA and the Dorothea Hoover Historical Museum. She served on numerous local boards, including the Women’s Board at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club, Joplin Health and Welfare, Joplin Federated Republican Women, Spiva Center for the Arts, various community concerts and even served as a Girl Scout leader. In her spare time, Pat enjoyed oil painting, knitting and crocheting, playing golf, and her most favorite pastime – playing Bridge.

In January 1955, Bob joined Empire District Electric Company, working as an electrical engineer. A few months after his career began, Bob joined the Air Force and was stationed at the Arnold Engineer Development Center in Tullahoma, Tennessee, where he worked alongside some of the top German scientists in the construction of wind tunnels for jet engine testing. He earned the rank of Captain before his honorable discharge in 1958. Bob then returned to Empire and worked his way up in rank. He was elected Vice President of Customer Services in October 1974 and Executive Vice President in January 1978. On June 1, 1982, Bob was elected President of Empire District Electric – a position he held until his retirement in March 1997 after a 50-year career.

Like Pat, Bob also served his community in various capacities during his career, including the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce and Joplin United Way. He sat on the boards for the Joplin Industrial Development Authority, Joplin Business and Industrial Development Corporation, Mercy Regional Health Foundation, American Hospital Association’s National Congress of Hospital Governing Boards, Missouri Chamber of Commerce, St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Missouri Southern Foundation, and Board of Regents of MSSU. Bob was also a pillar in the success of the Edison Electric Institute, the MOKAN Power Pool, Southwest Power Pool, and North American Reliability Council. He was recognized as Joplin’s Outstanding Citizen in 1987 and Outstanding Community Economic Development Leader for the State of Missouri in 1991.

Bob and Pat dedicated their lives to Christ and selflessly served their Immanuel Lutheran Church family for many decades. Both Bob and Pat taught Sunday School and enjoyed nothing more than helping others grow in their spiritual relationships. Bob served numerous times as Church President, served on Church Council, the Board of Elders, and worked as the Head of the Shepherds Program and Chairman of the Building Fund. Their unending love for their Lord and Savior has promised that they will always be together and never apart.

In addition to their parents, Bob and Pat were preceded in death by their son, David Lewis Lamb; and Pat’s sister, Carolyn Martin.

They are survived by their daughter, Nancy Conger, and her husband, John, of Joplin; seven grandchildren, Brandon Durham, Jerod Durham (Shanna), Kallie McGrew (Mike), Kristi Fuemmeler (Tim), Kara Lamb, Kaci Lamb and Samantha Daniels; 14 great-grandchildren, Parker Durham, Lilly Durham, Tori Durham, Nora Durham, Layla McGrew, Maisy McGrew, Ellie Fuemmeler, Graham Fuemmeler, Madyson Barber, Nakiya Lamb, Avery Jo Perkins, Kyson Perkins, Jayce Perkins and Malaky Lamb; Pat’s sisters, Peggy Bahe (Wilmer) and Charlene Jasperson (Jim); brother-in-law, Tom Martin; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

A joint funeral service will be held for Bob and Pat at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Joplin with Pastor Gregory Mech officiating. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. The family will receive friends for visitation from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Parker Mortuary, Joplin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church in care of the mortuary.

Luis Rodriguez

Luis Wigberto Plaza Rodriguez, age 44, of Webb City, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2020, at Freeman Hospital.

Luis was born January 11, 1976, in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, to Luis W. Plaza and Felicita Rodriguez. Luis grew up in Puerto Rico, moving to Joplin in October of 1998 with his wife and children.

Luis worked as a store manager for Auto Zone for 15 years, until he sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury in an automobile accident in October 2015. He had a love for cars, his Toyota being his pride and joy. But what gave him life was the children he raised as his own and then being blessed with his son Gaby, the light in his eye. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. 

In addition to his wife Roxana Viquez, survivors include his children, Natasha Figueroa and husband Roberto, Anna Gonzalez and husband Angelo, Edgardo Gonzalez and wife Roxie, Francisco Gonzalez and wife Kassidy, Jonathan Gonzalez and wife Shelby, and son Luis G. Plaza; grandchildren Raileh, Kailianna, Angelo, Alexius, Lukah, Luciana, Ezekiel, Nalani, Nova, Julian, Jovani and Ryker; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, September 3, 2020, at Parker Mortuary Chapel with Travis James officiating. The family with received friends from 12:00 p.m. until service time at the mortuary. Interment will follow at Osborne Memorial Cemetery.

Geri Webb

Geraldine “Geri” Webb, 81, Diamond, MO entered into rest August 30, 2020, after a lengthy illness. She was born January 22, 1939 in Stella, MO to Bonnie Arlita (Arendt) and Crawford T. Lentz. Geri was a 1956 graduate of Granby High School. 

She married Jimmy Dale Webb in 1968; Jim preceded her in death on February 5, 2008. 

Geri was a housewife, seamstress, school cook, and co-owner of Champion Muffler in Neosho, MO. She enjoyed collecting Elvis memorabilia and novelty frogs; she rode in antique cars in parades; she was a member of Yesteryear Car Club; she was a great Pitch card player; and she loved her juke box. 

Geri is survived by two sons, Jim Oxendine and Steve Oxendine, both of Diamond, MO; three grandchildren, Brandon James Oxendine, Courtney Leann Oxendine, and Christina Lynn Oxendine; and three great grandchildren, Ethan Ray Thomas, Zoie Nevin, and Anson James Butler. In addition to her husband, Geri was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Billie Jo Lentz; and one sister, Ellen Fay Lentz.

Graveside services will be held 1:30 pm, Friday, September 4, 2020 at Granby Memorial Cemetery, Granby, MO; Pastor Greg Snow will officiate. Arletta DeGraff

Arletta Joy DeGraff, 78 , of rural Carl Junction, MO, passed away on August 28th, 2020 after a long battle with cancer.

Arletta was born February 11th, 1942 in Picher, Oklahoma. She attended schools in Henderson, NV and Carl Junction, MO. She later attended Missouri Southern State University. She loved the college environment and thrived in her studies of sociology and psychology. Younger students marveled at her wisdom and experience, as her family did. Her professors were amazed as well, recounting her significant contributions to their classes.

On April 15th, 1958, Arletta was united in marriage to Elmer E. DeGraff for 61 years, and they had 3 children. 

Survivors included her husband, Gene, of the home: 3 children, Shawn and Lee DeGraff of Webb City, MO: Pam and Larry Larimore of Joplin, MO, and Mark and Carrie DeGraff of Carl Junction, MO. She had numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Arletta was preceded in death by her mother Bertie, seven brothers: Gaither Phillips, Floyd Gilmore, Doyle Gilmore, Charles Gilmore, Bob Gilmore, Jack Edwards, Thomas Edwards; and a sister, Bernice Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children Research Hospital, in Memphis, Tennessee, in care of the mortuary. Arletta was keenly interested in St. Jude’s mission for children, its successes and future plans.

Bill Geeslin

William (Bill) David Geeslin, AKA “Sweet William," age 88, passed away on Wednesday August 26, 2020 peacefully, from the COVID-19 virus, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. 

He was born on October 22, 1931 at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Pittsburg, KS, the only child of the late Dr. Frank M. and Goldie Mae (Ellyson) Geeslin of Lamar, MO. He graduated from High School in 1949 and began is baking career at the Electric Bakery in Lamar, MO. 

He married the late Betty Lucietta, the love of his life, on October 8, 1950 at the First Baptist Church in Lamar, MO. They were married for 52 years until she passed suddenly in 2002. The two “met” for the first time in Mt. Carmel Hospital, where both occupied the same incubator shortly after birth. The late Minnie Lucietta, mother of the bride, often remarked of an eventual marriage between the two. The romance began to bloom when they were sophomores at Lamar High School. 

Bill and Betty left for Kansas City, MO where Bill had obtained a job at the famous McLain’s Bakery in the Waldo area as a cake decorator. He remained there for over 30 years until he moved on to Interstate Brands/Hostess where he specialized in product development. He worked until 2002. 

He was a loving father and grandfather who was there for everything they participated in. In 2003 he moved to Springfield, MO to be closer to Mike and his children. He was the backbone of his family with the support and encouragement he gave to everyone. He did not know a stranger and brightened everyone’s day with laughter. Bill was a very funny guy, a flirt, ornery and had a great sense of humor. He was known for his generous heart and spirit and will be so deeply missed by all.

He is survived by his son Mike Geeslin of Springfield, MO; 4 grandchildren Derek (Jodi) Geeslin of Colombia, MO, Alexandra Geeslin of Columbia, MO, Sarah (Chad) Andrist of Raymore-Peculiar, MO, and Erica Baier of Oak Grove, MO; and 3 great-grandchildren Skylee and Ryder Andrist and Sam Wardlow. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many, many friends.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and daughter Debra Ann Baier.

Winona Stephens

Winona Charlene Stephens, 85, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at her home in Diamond, MO. Winona was born March 6, 1935 in Miller, MO to J.C. and Bertha “Irwin” Vivian. 

She lived in the Kansas City/Olathe areas from 1954 to 1993, then moved to Diamond where she lived until her passing. Prior to retirement, Winona worked as a Walmart greeter in Olathe and Webb City.

Winona was united in marriage to Robert Leslie Stephens on November 15, 1952 in Miller, MO; he preceded her in death. 

Winona is survived by three sons, Rick Stephens (Alice) of Diamond, Jerry Stephens (Karen) of Fulton, MO and Charles Stephens (Judy) of Kansas City, KS; one daughter, Joyce Lutjen (Lynn) of Sedalia, MO; two sisters, Ann Gilmore of K.C., KS and Deloris Wimpsatt of Chelsie, OK; six grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Winona was preceded in death by two sons, Dennis Joe Stephens and Robbie Lee Stephens; three brothers, Edgar Laws, Seybert Laws and Carroll Dean Laws; four sisters, Velma Gardner, Marjorie Tinker, Mira McGhee and Wilda Darlene Murhurin.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 31, 2020 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Graveside services will immediately follow at 11:30 a.m. at New Hope Cemetery north of Avilla.

Shirley Marie Smith longtime Afton and Miami area resident passed from this life Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Windridge Nursing and Rehab in Miami, OK. She was 83.

Shirley was born March 9, 1937 in Afton, OK to Art and Mabel (Miller) Hale. She had lived in the Miami and Afton area most of her life. She owned and operated restaurants in Vinita and Afton for many years and was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith and loved to attend rodeos.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Jim L. Smith in 2002, her parents, 1 brother Haden Hale and 2 sisters Betty Jones and Mary Miller. 

Survivors include 2 sons Steve Gibson of Miami, OK and Tim Smith of Miami, OK, 1 daughter Lisa Foreman and husband Ben of Oaks, OK, 1 brother James Hale of Joplin, MO, 5 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.

Lawrence Horton

Lawrence L. Horton age 75 of Racine, Missouri passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri. He was born on January 14, 1945 in Stella, Missouri the son of Lawrence Eugene & Katherine (McGarrah) Horton.

Lawrence drove a bus for Grand Lake Mental Health and the Pelivan retiring after 23 years of service. : A loving Husband, Dad and Grandpa! He loved spending time with his wife of 53 years and getting visits from his daughter and grandchildren. He loved the Lord and going to church. His family meant everything to him. You will be missed. Forever in our hearts

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Calvin Horton. 

He is survived by his wife, Sarah of the home; a daughter, Terri Jackson and her husband Lamar, of Chloeta, Oklahoma, a brother, Gary Horton and his wife, Trisha, of Miami, Oklahoma and three sisters, Betty Welch of Anderson, Missouri, Kathy Garza of Lafayette, Georgia and Cindy Summers, of Chickamauga, Georgia. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Graveside services and Interment will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, at Glen Abbey Cemetery in Miami, Oklahoma with Bro. Kelly Sampson, officiating. Tim Harris

Timothy Russell Harris, 63, of Pittsburg, Kansas passed away on August 22, 2020 after a hard-fought battle with illness.

Tim was born on March 10, 1957 in Joplin, Missouri, to Maxine Blanche (Young) and Thomas Orville Harris, the second of four children. He was a 1975 graduate of Pittsburg High School and attended Pittsburg State University before joining the U.S. Navy in 1976, where he served with distinction for 21.5 years. As a Machinist Mate, Tim rose from Seaman Recruit to Senior Chief Petty Officer before he was commissioned as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1993. Tim proudly served on the USS Nimitz from 1978-1982, the USS Peleliu from 1985-1990, worked as a recruitment officer from 1990-1994, and finished his service on the USS Aubrey Fitch from 1994-1997.

After retiring from the Navy in 1998, Tim began exploring his passions, including riding motorcycles and traveling across the country. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 534 in Joplin, MO, the VFW Post 8220 in Belton, MO, and the American Legion Post in Pittsburg, Kansas. He also finished his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at Pittsburg State University in 2007, earning Cum Laude honors. In 2013, he met Karen Endicott, and they were married on November 13, 2019. 

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, Maxine and Tom and his niece, Lindsay Kate Perez. 

He is survived by his wife Karen; stepmother Gay Harris; uncle George (Carrie) Harris; aunt Margie Young; siblings Lee Ann (Jeff) Perez, Chris (Rachel) Harris, Jennifer (Nichole) Harris-Wicks; his nieces Hillary (Mark) Woolsey, Chloe Harris, Abby Harris; nephew Gabe Harris; great nieces and nephews Avery (Carlos) Perez, Simon Woolsey, Gavin Woolsey, Grayson Woolsey; great-great nephews Isaac and Cameron; step-daughter Kourtney (Caden) Yantis, and his fur “boys” Isaac and Newton. He was also incredibly excited to become “Popeye” to his granddaughter, Lincoln Yantis, in a few months.

Tim will be remembered for his love and vast appreciation of music, especially rock, his zest for life, his sense of humor, and his unfailing positive energy.

Jessie Hall

Jessie Lynn Hall, age 67, of Lamar, MO passed away Thursday, August 27, 2020, at Kansas City, MO VA Medical Center.

Jessie was born August 13, 1953 in Webb Ctiy, MO to Joseph and Annie May (Crider) Hall. Jessie served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. He enjoyed woodworking, making squirrel feeders, fishing, bluegrass music and he used to play the banjo when he was younger.

Jessie was a machine operator while working for O'Sullivan Industries and Thorco. He had also worked for Koch Industries. 

Survivors include two children, Casey Taylor of Lamar, MO and James Hall of Lamar, MO; two brothers, James Hall, Kansas City, MO and Grover Hall, Grovois Mills, MO; five grandchildren, Jessica Spelts, Bryan McCormick, Lynzi Taylor, Blake Taylor, and Carly Taylor.

Preceding Jessie in death were his parents, a brother Joe Hall, who died as a child; two sisters, Jo Ann Duncan and Nina Gardner; and a granddaughter, Amanda Taylor

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2020, at Daniel Funeral Home with Military Honors. There will be a private family burial in Olive Branch Cemetery, Milo, MO.

Howard Harrington

Howard Harrington was born February 6, 1943 in Neosho, Missouri, the son of Avery and Cordia (Crabtree) Harrington. He entered into rest, following a sudden illness on August 14, 2020 at the age of 77. 

Howard was a lifelong area resident and had worked as a supervisor at Talbot Wire and security guard at Opal Foods. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons. 

Howard and Donna (Bohannan) were married on December 11, 1961 and she preceded him in death on May 13, 2020. 

He is survived by three children, Teresa Testerman, Raymond (Lori) Harrington and Duke (Dixie) Harrington all of Neosho; one brother, Roy Harrington of Lead Hill, Arkansas; fifteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. 

In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Howard W. Harrington and nine siblings.

A memorial graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at 11 am at the Reagan Cemetery. A covered dish luncheon will follow at the VFW Community Room in Neosho.

Kurt Zenbauer

Kurt Zenbauer, age 48 of Galena, passed away at his home on Friday, August 21, 2020. 

Kurt was born in Cleveland, OH on August 4, 1972 to the union of Mark Anthony “Tony” Zenbauer and Helen Virginia (Smith) Zenbauer. 

He and his family moved to Galena in 1977. Kurt worked as a line worker at Glister Mary Lee in Joplin, and also as a bread maker, meat cutter, and “jack of all trades” at Ryan’s Restaurant in Joplin. 

His favorite thing to do was to attend church at the Joplin Seventh Day Adventist Church where he had been a member for several years. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Tony Zenbauer. Survivors include his mother, Helen Zenbauer; and one brother, Erich Zenbauer, both of Galena.

Johnnie Louder

Johnnie Rae Louder, age 75, of Exeter, Missouri, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2020 at his home.

He was born December 19, 1944 in Wheaton, Missouri the son of Clayton Chester Louder and Jenny Mooney, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Tammy Gibbs and her husband Jeff of Noel, Missouri and Patty Rickards and her husband Rob of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; one son, Robert Louder of Noel, Missouri; one brother, Ronnie Bass of Washburn, Missouri; two sisters, Donna Cooper of Oceanside, California and Jeanie Bryan and her husband Lee of Lake Cherokee, Texas; nine grandchildren, Jeremy, Tianna, Lindsey, Cortney, Robyn, Rachel, Jerry, Kierani and Keighley and three great grandchildren, Rykar, Aiden and Elise. 

Johnnie was a graduate of Southwest High School at Washburn, Missouri. For several years he was employed by General Motors in Kansas City, Missouri. He was loved by most people who knew him and he could fix almost anything. Most of his favorite pastimes involved the outdoors including exploring caves, lakes and cliffs. He was an avid collector of Winchester knives and guns.

Ronald Lester

Ronald Lester age 77 of Joplin, Missouri passed away Friday August 28, 2020 at his home following a decline in health.

He was born August 12, 1943 in Joplin, Missouri.

Ronald served his country in the United States Navy. After his service to his country he worked as a Firefighter for Joplin, Missouri and then was a steel cutter for Cardinal Scale Manufacturing. He was a member of Villa Heights Christian Church.

He married Billie Jean Kennedy on May 29, 1999 and she survives.

 

Ronald is also survived by one brother Donald Lester and wife Patty; seven grandchildren and numerous extended family and friends.

Ronald was preceded in death by his parents; one adopted son Jason Lester; two stepsons, Brian and Keith Kershaw and one stepdaughter, Rhonda Kershaw-Carver.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday September 2, 2020 at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary chapel with Ernie Friend officiating. Burial will follow at the Fidelity Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00-6:00 pm Tuesday at the mortuary.

Dale Wagner

Dale Lee Wagner, 76, of, Rogers, Arkansas died August 27, 2020 at Mercy Hospital in Rogers.

He was born April 29, 1944 in Aplington, Iowa to Howard Glen Wagner and Carolyn Louise Schwinger Wagner. He moved to Pea Ridge in 1984 to make his home and was a self-employed home contractor. 

He enjoyed beekeeping, playing cards, woodworking and gardening. Dale loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, David and James Wagner. 

Survivors are his children, Lorri Talberg (Matt) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jennifer Hoffman (Mark) of Webb City, Missouri, January Herron (Charlie) of Jay, Oklahoma, Jamie Wagner (Jennifer) of Pea Ridge, Jake Wagner (Melissa) of Garfield, Jordan Wagner of Bella Vista; siblings, Shirley Munier of Des Moines, Iowa, Millie Stevenson of Spokane, Washington, Dean Wagner of Waterloo, Iowa, Merle Wagner (Joyce) of Delano, Minnesota, Fanny Hansen (Martin) of Clear Lake, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren.

Paul Sampson

Paul W. Sampson, 60, Seneca, MO passed into eternal rest at 8:22pm, August 27, 2020 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.

Paul Wilbur Sampson was born May 10, 1960 in Phoenix, AZ the son of Wilbur and Myrtle (Griffith) Sampson. Paul started working with his father in the dry wall business at an early age. He continued in the dry wall business working with family and friends for years. 

Paul also worked for Keith and Kaleb Sampson driving a dump truck and he formerly worked for the Seneca R7 School District as a bus driver. Paul loved people, he loved to argue, cut-up and was full of life. He loved to spend time with his family especially his grand-children Kohin and Kahnin. Paul took special care in spoiling them. Paul was a member of the First Pentecostal Church of Carthage. He loved his church and he loved to sing. His loud laughter, his singing and his blunt opinion’s will be missed by everyone he has left behind.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents Bro Wilbur and Sis Myrtle, 3 brothers, Luther Jonathan and Phillip.

Rebecca Ann Douffet

January 29, 1936 – August 28, 2020

Rebecca “Becky” Douffet passed from this life after a long illness.

Becky was known to many in the Galena-Riverton-Baxter Springs area from her many years serving the community as a cashier at area grocery stores. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Harper’s Refrigeration in Riverton.

She was the oldest of four siblings born to Woodrow G. Mitchell and Catherine (Webb) Mitchell (both deceased) in rural Newton County. 

She is survived by a brother, Phillip Mitchell of Springfield, MO and a sister, Wanda Lou Soares of Mililani Town, HI. Her young brother Sam Mitchell preceded her in passing. She was mother to four sons, James Alan Coulson, Kenneth L. Coulson (deceased), Douglas W. Coulson (deceased), and Patrick S. Foreman of Joplin, MO. She was widowed three times. She was a grandmother to Jennifer, Derek, Melissa, and Amber as well as a great-grandmother to their children.

Becky enjoyed attending church and was a member of First Baptist Church of Galena. She enjoyed taking care of her plants and flowers and loved animals, especially dogs. In lieu of flowers, Becky’s family request donations are made in her memory to the Joplin Humane Society at 104 E. Emperor Lane, Joplin, MO 64801.

Betty Seward

Betty Jean Seward, of Webb City, MO, went home to the Lord on Thursday August 27, 2020 at Webb City Health and Rehab. She was eighty-four.

Betty was born on October 12, 1935 in Joplin, the daughter of the late Alvin and Roxie (Barnes) Hembree. She has been a lifetime area resident. She married Jack Seward on May 25, 1952 and together they were blessed with four daughters. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She lived a God fearing life and made it her Earthly mission to lead others to Jesus. She had the softest hands, biggest smile, and gave the best hugs! We will miss you more than you will ever know.

Betty worked as a secretary for Joplin Orthopedic Surgeons, Dr. Talley, and Freeman Hospital with Dr. Bruce Burleigh. She was a longtime member of Southside Baptist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Jack Seward on December 5, 2016; one brother, Lance Hembree; a son-in-law, Charlie Meadows; four brothers-in-law, Charlie Seward, Kenneth Seward and wife Norma; Jessie Riggs, and Jim Kellog; and by two sisters-in-law Charlotte Jones and husband Jerry, and Alice Riggs.

She is survived by four daughters, Joy Lee Taylor and husband Tim, Gaylynn Morris and husband John, Christine Meadows, and Robbie Ann Stroud and husband Dale, all of Webb City, MO; nine grandchildren, Deidra Sluder (Scott), Brent Taylor (Stephanie), James Jordan, Genesis Russell, Kathryn Booher (Jason), Emily O’Donnell (Brett), Cali Woodmansee (Chad), Brad Stroud (Stephanie), and Samantha Wortman (Ike); nineteen great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Erma Hembree, Ruth Ellen Cogbill, Shirley Kellog, and Patsy Jean Passantino and husband, Joe; five brothers-in-law, John Earl Seward and wife Patty, Ron Seward and wife Mary, Rick Seward and wife Peggy, Bill Seward and wife Kathy, and Jack Riggs and wife Rose; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Burial will be in Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Friends may visit during regular visiting hours. The family request all who attend to please wear a mask.

Jimmy Millard

Jimmy Ray Millard, passed peacefully Tuesday August 25th, 2020 at the age of 86. He was born to George and Ethel Millard in Joplin, MO on January 11th, 1934. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Virginia, and brother Bill. 

Jim is survived by his wife Ruth Millard of 62 years and 2 children: Jeff (Carol) and Todd (Bobbi), four grandchildren Katie (Ronnie), Courtney (Brandon) Megan (Josh) and Hank. 4 great-grand-children Brock, Brooklyn, Will and Eliza. 

Jim was an Army veteran and retired after 44 years at Eagle Picher in Joplin. A long-standing member of the Wildwood Baptist Church, Jim will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

The family would like to extend thanks to Silver Creek Assisted Living and Arbors as well as Avalon Hospice for their compassionate care of our father. There will not be any services at this time.

Darlene Hills

Darlene Jo Hills, age 84, Neosho, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin after a sudden illness.

Darlene was born August 1, 1936 in Saginaw, Missouri, daughter of the late Leo Francis Hills and Mildred Gunile Hines Hills. She graduated from Neosho High School, and went to work for Empire District Electric Company at the age of 18, and worked for them for over 40 years, retiring in 1995. She was a member of Saginaw Baptist Church.

Darlene has lived at her home for over 63 years, and took great pride in the appearance of her plants and gardening around the house. She was also very gracious to all the animals in her area. She was currently feeding her deer, raccoons, and wild birds. She also had a soft spot for all her cats. 

She was a great sister, aunt, great-aunt, and neighbor that will be greatly missed by all.
In addition to her parents, Darlene was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Hills Kopf, and her longtime companion, Thomas Bowes.

Survivors include her brother, Hugh M. Hills of Neosho, nieces, Conni J. Lipe and husband Ronnie of Joplin, Cathy Kidwell and husband Joe of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Candy Kopf of Nebraska; nephews, Tom Hills and wife Kristan of Joplin, and Randall Kopf and wife Nancy of Nebraska; several great-nieces and nephews.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.

Rex Handley

Rex Hurley Handley, age 79, Carterville, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2020 at Freeman West of Joplin.

Rex was born March 5, 1941 in Webb City, Missouri, son of the late Ted. W. Handley and Katherine V. Trimble Handley. He graduated from William Christman High School in Independence, Missouri, and then proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy. Rex was stationed in California during his military service. Following his honorable discharge, he worked for J & S in San Diego, California for 16 years before returning to the Joplin area in 1999.

Rex enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and watching and feeding birds. He was a dedicated fan of Webb City Football, and NASCAR. Rex never missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune. His biggest passion was rooting on his beloved Kansas City Chiefs even when he lived in Charger territory. 

In addition to his parents, Rex was preceded in death by a son, Gary Handley.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Delores Gay Arehart Handley of Carterville; son, Ronald Handley; daughters, Rexanna Blas, Theresa Valenzuela (Ray); grandchildren, Nick, Reese, Ashley, Rory, Randy, and ReiLee; great-grandchildren, Wynter, NovaLee, Ezekiel, Kazuna, Kaina, and Annabella; brothers, James Handley and Gary Handley; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be Sunday, August 30, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. Parker Mortuary Chapel with Alan McCamey officiating, and full military honors.

Cremation will follow the service, and his ashes will be interred at a later date in Seneca Cemetery.

Michael Brinkhoff

Michael Alan Brinkhoff, of Lockwood, MO, departed this life on Monday, August 24, 2020, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, MO at the age of 62.

He was born on June 11, 1958 in Highland Park, IL to Charles and Diane (Delaney) Brinkhoff. Michael graduated from Golden City High School in Golden City, MO. He continued his education becoming a Master Mechanic in the Automobile Industry. Michael was united in marriage to Linda C. Brummett, and to this union were born seven children.

He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and was a member of the Patriot Guard Riders. Michael loved playing the guitar, and was an avid fisherman. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. 

Preceding him in death was his mother, Diane Brinkhoff; three sons, Jason Wayne Brinkhoff, Paul Michael Brinkhoff, and Alden Jerald Brinkhoff; and one daughter, Cheryl Naomi Brinkhoff.

Survivors include his wife of many years, Linda Brinkhoff of Lockwood, MO; one son, Alan James Brinkhoff of Lockwood, MO; two daughters, Shaunna Janes and husband Andy of Lockwood, MO, and Amy DeVito and husband Brandon of Benton, AR; his father, Charles Brinkhoff; one brother, Jeff Brinkhoff and wife Jerica of Republic, MO; three sisters, Nancy Lund and husband Guy of Parker, CO, Mary DePaolo and husband Dean of Thornton, CO, and Peggy Roen and husband Scott of Parker, CO; four grandchildren, Emily Janes, Blake Janes, Aiden Janes, and Raeleigh DeVito; fourteen nieces and nephews; four great nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2020, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Lee Englert

Lee Englert age 94 of Joplin, Missouri passed on Monday, August 24, 2020 at his home. He was born on July 23, 1926 to Benjamin Franklin Englert and Ethel Louise (Craig) Englert who preceded him in death. 

Lee attended grade school through his junior year in Nevada, Missouri at which time he moved to Joplin where he attended his senior year graduating Joplin High School in the class of 1944. He then joined the army in 1944 and served in Okinawa with the 7th Infantry Division until being wounded in 1945 after which he was in US Army general hospitals in Springfield and Battle Creek Michigan for two years. 

Lee was discharged from the hospital in 1947. He worked at R&S Chevrolet from 1947 until 1965. Lee then worked for Roper Pontiac until 1971, at which time he and his sons opened Englert Body & Frame Shop in Webb City where he worked until his retirement in 2003. 

Lee was always active in little league baseball and Babe Ruth baseball. In 1963 he took his All Star Babe Ruth team to Farmington, New Mexico for the Babe Ruth World Series. 

For several years he was a basketball coach with the Boys and Girls Club. Lee was active in the Webb City Lions Club serving as Secretary and then President. He served as Glasses Chairman and President of the Webb City Civic Club, and glassed chairman of the New Webb City Lions Club. Lee served on the board of directors as board member and secretary of SW Electric Railroad Association. He also enjoyed being an engineer of Streetcar #60, boating, fishing, golf, playing cards, and most of all playing music with family and friends. Lee attended First Gospel Workers Church and St. Philips Episcopal Church. 

He is survived by his wife Linda Englert; children, David Englert (Fran), Don Englert (Kristy), Frank Englert (Kelley), Scott Daniels, Leslie Daniels; grandchildren, Jeff Englert (Amy), Jason Englert (Mandi), Cory Minshall (Katie), Clay Cobble, Stormi Nordstrom (Blake), Shannon Irwin (Billy), Brandee Read(Scott), Jerry Wilson; and sixteen great grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Levi Englert.

A graveside committal with full military honors will be held on Monday, August 31, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Gary Grant McKeehen, age 76, Joplin, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2020 at his home.

Gary was born October 9, 1943 in Joplin, son of the late Parker McKeehen and Merley Woodard McKeehen. He attended Joplin High School, and left early to join the United States Navy at the age of 17. He served in Vietnam on the USS Hancock out of California, being on the ship for 2 years and 9 months. He returned to Joplin and worked for Vickers, then Thermal Engineering before retiring from C & C Machine Products as a supervisor.

In his younger years, Gary enjoyed spending time working on cars, racing at MOKAN Drag Strip, and being a member of the 4 State Vettes Club with his corvette. He also enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing, and was a proud member of the Joplin Elks Lodge, #501, and the VFW. 

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Denise Hebert McKeehen; daughters, Amy Schroer of Boston, Massachusetts, Bethany Schroer of Joplin, Jennifer Schroer (Kevan Martone) of San Mateo, California, Adena Burks (Wayne), and Paula Hurl (William) all of Joplin; grandchildren, Averi Burks, Allie Burks, Keenan Hurl, Marshall Hurl, Greyson Elick, California Martone, and Diem Martone.

Graveside service with Full Military Honors will be Saturday, August 29, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Ozark Memorial Park Mausoleum with Rev. Rick Flinn officiating.

Brenda Allison

Brenda Lea Allison, 56, of Webb City, passed away Monday, August 24, 2020, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin after a courageous battle with cancer.

Brenda was born February 8, 1964, in Sacramento, California, to Jimmie and Jane (True) Hedges. She attended schools in Nevada and was a 1982 graduate of Nevada High School. Following high school, Brenda attended Missouri Southern and received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting/Computer Science in 1985.

In 1991, Brenda was united in marriage to Donald L. “Donnie” Reynolds II and together they had two children, Matthew and Kaylee. Donnie preceded her in death in 1998. Following Donnie’s passing, Brenda married Darrell Allison in 2005 and together they had one son, Tyler. 

Brenda worked as a Computer Programmer/Analyst for Empire Electric for 20 years, retiring in 2005. Following retirement, she fulfilled part-time bookkeeping positions at Crosslines Ministries, The Counseling Center, Edward Jones, Spiva, and she also worked as a tax preparer for Liberty Tax Service. Brenda believed in her community and the value of education. She was a large supporter of Webb City Schools in many capacities – a lunch cashier, a substitute teacher, a member of PTO, and she was a frequent volunteer for various school functions. Brenda was a Christian and had a servant’s heart. She was a member of Christ’s Church of Oronogo.

In her spare time, Brenda was happiest near the water – she loved the beach and the lake. Brenda found joy in everything involving her family and her entire world revolved around them. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, the best grandmother, and a compassionate daughter and sister. Brenda was strong, vibrant, and took her days for all they were worth. She was a friend to all, so very loved, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her first husband, Brenda was preceded in death by her in-laws, Donald L. Reynolds I and William and Mary Lou Allison.

Survivors include her husband, Darrell, of the home; six children, Jarad Allison (Lacy) of Joplin, Brice Allison of Joplin, Dylan Allison (Mallory) of Neosho, Matthew Reynolds of Webb City, Kaylee Reynolds (Casey) of Joplin, and Tyler Allison of the home; five grandchildren, Avalee, Brayden, Judge, Ayla and Paislee; her mother, Jane Steele (Robert), of Joplin; her father, Jimmie Hedges (Cindy), of Nevada; two sisters, Trudy Holtkamp of Springfield and Jamie Patrick of Branson; her mother-in-law, Katherine Reynolds, of Carterville; her loving brothers and sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 29, 2020, at Christ’s Church of Oronogo with Pastor Mark Christian officiating. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Matthew Reynolds, Tyler Allison, Jarad Allison, Dylan Allison, Casey Craig, Seth Reynolds and Kyle Reynolds. The family will receive friends for visitation on Friday from 5-8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Parker Mortuary, Joplin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Crosslines Ministries of Joplin, a ministry very dear to Brenda, in care of the mortuary.

Pete Campbell

Gary “Pete” Campbell, age 78, of South Greenfield, Missouri, passed away at 6:10 p.m. on Monday, August 24, 2020, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He was born August 12, 1942, in Stone County, Missouri, the son of William Thomas and Bess (Hammer) Campbell.

Pete was a 1960 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. He was a truck driver and a member of the Masons in Greenfield, Missouri.

On December 17, 1998, he married Kathy Bowman, in Diamond, Missouri. 

Pete is survived by his wife, Kathy; four daughters, Debra Campbell Rainwater of Springfield, Missouri, Teresa Veith and her husband, Jerry, of Joplin, Missouri, Pamela A. Campbell of Carthage, Missouri and Anna Hicks and her husband, Robby, of Stillwater, Oklahoma; three sons, Rich Campbell and his wife, Kim, of Pinson, Alabama, Gary W. Campbell and his wife, Stephanie, of Billings, Missouri and Ronnie Campbell of Mt. Vernon; one brother, Jerry Campbell and his wife, Cathy, of Pierce City, Missouri; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, William, and Bess, two daughters, Stacie Manes and Misty Gillmore, granddaughter, Cori Clark and son-in-law, SSgt, Lamont Rainwater.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2020, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Burial will follow at the Goss Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00–7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2020, in the funeral home chapel.

Shane Ladd

Shane Kolburn Ladd, 48, passed away in Carthage, MO on August 22, 2020. He was born September 12th, 1971 to Kenneth Samuel Ladd and Sandra Kay Ladd in Alton, IL. 

After graduating high school Shane started his career at O’Sullivan Industries where soon after he met his wife, Rachel Burris, and began a family. He raised his children in Avilla, MO where many memories were made through family gatherings. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Shawn O’Brien Ladd. 

Shane enjoyed working on his motorcycles, woodworking, spending time with his family and of course, blasting his rock n’ roll music.

Left to honor Shane include his eldest daughter Savannah Reese Ladd along with grandson Braxton Reid Royster and youngest daughter Kennedy Ruth Ladd both of Carthage, MO; his sister Shannon Ladd Crutcher and brother-in-law Buster Crutcher of Springfield, MO; Nieces, Sydney Ladd Cunningham and husband Drew Cunningham along with great niece Zoey Cunningham of Springfield, MO, Oletha Hope Parks and husband Orey Parks of Kaiserslautern, Germany, Evangelena Noel Ladd of Springfield, MO and nephew Patrick O’Brien Ladd of Springfield, MO. Survivors also include good friend Jason Collins and mentor Don Clements.

Frances Faulkner

Frances Dee Faulkner, 95, Carthage, Missouri, passed away Sunday morning, August 23, 2020 at her home. Frances was born October 15, 1924 in Petersburg, Indiana; the daughter of James Ray Moler and Hilda (Berridge) Moler. 

She was a 1942 graduate of Muncie Central High School, Muncie, Indiana. Frances was a veteran serving her country in the U.S. Navy Waves in Washington, D.C. from 1944 to 1947. She married Commander Stuart T. Faulkner, U.S.N., on November 21, 1946 in Washington, D.C. Frances then worked as a court recorder and secretary until her retirement. 

She was a member of the Gold Star Wives, Reitred Officers Wives, Communication Wives Organization, and served as President-Vice Chairman for the American Red Cross. She volunteered for Military Officers Association of America, American Red Cross, and the VA Hospital. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage.

Survivors include a daughter, Claudia Guess, Carthage; two sons, Ron Faulkner, Joplin, Missouri, and Donald Faulkner, Joplin, Missouri; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stuart Faulkner; and two brothers, Charles Moler, and William “Bill” Moler.

Per Frances’ wishes, there was cremation. Private family services will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be held in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, California.
