Mary Kathleen “Kay” White, aged 80 years, passed from this world on April 4, 2018 at the Gower Convalescent Center in Gower, MO following a lengthy illness.
Kay was a Tuesday’s child, born Emma Inez Phillips on Sept 7, 1937 to Albert E. and Flossie Viola Phillips in Mountain View, MO. As the poem says, “Tuesday’s child is full of grace.” In life, no one needed grace more than Kay. Her mother, Flossie died 2 days later from complications. On June 7, 1938 Emma Inez was adopted by Charles M. & Juanita K. Wescott and her name changed to Mary Kathleen Wescott. More unfortunate circumstances were ahead for Kay and in June of 1941, her adopted Mother Juanita died. Her adopted father Charles followed in death in August, 1941 due to the stress of losing his beloved spouse. Kay was much loved and was immediately gathered into foster care and a lifetime of guardianship with her adopted mother’s sister and her husband, C. L. and Thelma VanBuren in Clinton County, Missouri. There she was involved extensively in 4-H, University of Missouri Extension programs, Lathrop Christian Church and riding her Pinto pony on their farm.
After graduating from Lathrop High School in 1955, Kay attended Coty College in Nevada, Missouri. During this time, she met and married, Silas Ray (Junior) White on February 9, 1956. They settled in rural Newtonia, MO to start a family and regularly attended Newtonia Baptist Church where Kay played the piano. After several years they relocated to Lathrop, MO where they attended the First Baptist Church and Kay continued to use her gifts, playing the piano for services.
Silas preceded her in death on October 1, 2014. She is also preceded in death by a son, Harold Glen White on June 1, 2014, a granddaughter, Merri Kathleen Fontenot on September 21, 2010, her brother, Harold King Phillips on December 16, 2006, and a nephew, James Harold Phillips on March 22, 2016. Surviving are three daughters, Mary Livezey, LaPorte, TX, Cheryl Rogers Karguth of Amity, MO and Janice White, Lathrop, MO; three grandsons, four granddaughters, eight great grandsons and five great granddaughters (another expected in May), as well as one niece, Joyce Phillips of Kansas City.
Graveside services are planned for 10 a.m. Friday, April 6, at the Mound Chapel Cemetery in rural Stark City, Missouri.
