Virginia Lee (Degraff) Bennett of Joplin passed away at age 93 on November 3, 2018 after a short struggle with cancer. She was born April 23, 1925 in Pittsburg, Kansas to Lela (Moss) Danhakl and Virgil McLain and was married to John D. Bennett for 25 years. Virginia was a mother and homemaker before studying nursing and working in medical records at St. John’s Hospital in Joplin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Ralph Danhakl. Survivors include her brother Albert Danhakl, daughter Allisa Bennett, son Larry Bennett, adopted niece Debbie Jaynes, grandsons Tennessee John Lee Gurevitch Bennett and Gabriel Bennett, and great grandsons Oliver and Elliott Bennett.
Virginia loved music and made sure her children were exposed to jazz, classical, and popular music – especially big band jazz. Virginia’s generous spirit continued through the donation of her body to the KU School of Medicine with arrangements handled by Parker Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the First United Methodist Church of Pittsburg.
