Mikey Henson

Michael “Mikey” Ryan Henson, age 43 of Galena, passed away at 6:35 PM on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Mercy Hospital of Joplin, MO.

Mikey was born on September 3, 1977 to the union of Gary E. Henson and Candy L. (Gilstrap) Henson. He was a lifetime resident of Galena, graduating from Galena High School with the Class of 1996. 

He worked through the late 1980’s and most of the 1990’s building duct work for Gilstrap Sheet Metal. He received his certification as an electrician in 1997 and began working at Empire District, a position he would hold until 2011.







Throughout his youth, he had attended Joplin Full Gospel Church. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and spent many days diving into his family genealogy. He always made it a point to be at every one of his kid’s sporting events, and even spent some time as a Little League Coach.

Mikey was united in marriage with Shawna L. (Casteel) Henson at the Joplin Church in the Wildwood on September 21, 1996. She survives.

Additional survivors include his four children, Jessica Henson, Ethan Henson, Deacon Henson, and Jenna Henson; his mother, Candy Henson; two sisters, Chandee Jones (husband, Jeremy), and Sunny Henson; his maternal grandmother, Judy Gilstrap; his in-laws, Harvey and Laura Casteel, all of Galena; as well as several nieces and nephews who he always had a special bond with.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gary E. Henson on August 13, 2020; his paternal grandparents, Gary R. Henson and Nadine Henson; his maternal grandfather, Harold “Gil’ Gilstrap; and one aunt, Becky Henson.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at the Joplin Full Gospel Church, 2601 S. Indiana Ave, Joplin, MO 64804. Rev. Josh Patrick will officiate. 

Pallbearers serving will be Ethan Henson, Deacon Henson, Jeremy Jones, Rick Tracy, Travis Casteel, and Patrick McLaughlin, with Harvey Casteel, Butch Parker, and Bill Colgrove serving as honorary pallbearers. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery of Galena.

Visitation will take place from 10-11:00 AM at the church on the same day of the service.
