Mary Turpen

Mary Maxine Turpen, age 78, of Joplin, Missouri, formerly of Neosho, Missouri, entered into rest at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 11, 2022, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin. 

She was born November 15, 1943, to the late Troy H. and Mable “Leona” (Karlstrom) Oehring. She was baptized at the RLDS Church four days before her 8th birthday. On December 27, 1969, she married Jimmy Turpen in McDonald County, Missouri.








Mary graduated from Neosho High School in 1961 and attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, for a year. She then transferred to Pittsburg State University, where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1966. Mary began her teaching career in Kansas. In 1977 she received her master's degree from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield. Mary taught school and later tutored children and adults with learning disabilities in a mental health center retiring in 2002. She was a member of the Joplin Community of Christ Church. Mary enjoyed exploring genealogy and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Jimmy; three sons, Kevin Turpen and his wife, Hayley, of Overland Park, Kansas, Kent Turpen and his wife, Angela, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Mark Turpen and his wife, Mandy Leonard, of Webb City, Missouri; eleven grandchildren, Noah, Kael, Mareika, Alexa, Jade, Matthew, Wyatt, Justice, Braelyn, Kason, Declan; and two great-grandchildren, Cedar and Maple.

Her brother Charles David “Dave” Oehring also preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, with Terry McDermid officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Mary will be interred at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
