Verna Rickman

Verna A. Rickman, age 93, of Joplin, formerly of Poplar Bluff, passed away on Friday, August 2, 2024, at Spring River Christian Village in Joplin.

Verna, daughter of the late Miles and Kate (Cortson) Burris, was born on May 29, 1931, in Gideon. 

On February 17, 1950, she was united in marriage to James Rickman in Poplar Bluff. He preceded her in death on January 16, 2019.







Verna spent her life pouring into the lives of children. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and her passion for teaching led her to a fulfilling 30 year career as an elementary school teacher, mostly in the Fox C-6 School District.

Verna’s love for her Lord Jesus shone through her selfless service of others, family and friends alike. She joined in volunteer ministries at First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff and loved singing in their RSVP Choir. She was an active participant in the TOPS Program, in Poplar Bluff.

Above all, Verna cherished her role as a grandmother. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. and she devoted herself to creating lasting memories with them, singing, cooking or playing games, Verna's gentle spirit and loving nature made every moment spent with her grandchildren a precious one.

Survivors include her two daughters, Marilyn Rickman Guerich, Boca Raton, Florida, Jane A. Honeywell and husband, Bob, Joplin; grandchildren, Becky Barrera, Deborah Guerich, Martha Parker, Ruth Tsakh, Lois Sanchez, Joe Guerich, Lisa Lesley, Sarah Gaither, Katherine Lynch, Mike Honeywell; great grandchildren, Nora Barrera, Evie Tsakh, James Tsakh, Oliver Tsakh, Violet Sanchez, Logan Lesley, Tristan Lesley, Brooklyn Lesley, Kaison Lesley, Leland Gaither, Annie Gaither, Clementine Gaither, Braden Honeywell-Lynch, James Lynch, Millie Lynch, Winnie Lynch, and Margot Honeywell; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. 








In addition to her parents and husband, Verna was preceded in death by one daughter, Rita Rickman; and siblings, Lennie Maddox, Veda Bush, Thelma Fancher, Lois Butler Mynatt, and Wesley Burris.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Forest Park Baptist Church in Joplin. Burial with graveside service will be held on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Poplar Bluff, MO.
